    We study the following semilinear elliptic problem: [GRAPHICS] where B is a ball in R-N, N greater than or equal to 3, a(ij) = a(ij) (x, r) epsilon C-0,C-1 ((B) over bar x R), a(ij), partial derivativea(ij)/partial derivativex(i), partial derivativea(ij)/partial derivativer, b(i), c epsilon L-infinity (B x R), with i, j = 1, 2,(...),N and c less than or equal to 0, and f epsilon L-p(B). For each p, p greater than or equal to N, there exists a strong solution u epsilon W-2,W-p(B) boolean AND W-0(1,p)(B) provided the oscillations of a(ij) with respect to r are sufficiently small. Moreover, for N/2 < p < N, if f(Lp) is small enough, then the existence result remains hold.

In this work, high-performance polycrystalline Si thin film transistors have been fabricated by excimer laser crystallization of an amorphous Si film deposited on an array of amorphous Si spacers. The amorphous Si spacers served as seeds for lateral growth during excimer laser irradiation. Large longitudinal grains could be found in the device channel regions. In consequence, the thin-film transistors fabricated with Si spacer structure exhibited a high field-effect mobility of 288 cm(2)/V-s while the mobility of the conventional counterpart was 129 cm(2)/V-s. In addition, the uniformity of the device performance was improved as lateral growth could be artificially controlled. (C) 2004 The Electrochemical Society.

We have employed the photocapacitance measurement to examine the physical properties of GaN Schottky diode made from the undoped epilayer grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The resulted transient capacitance spectrum shows that the diode exhibits a characteristic of long-term logarithmic-type decaying behavior, which, we believe, is correlated closely to the linear arranged traps close to the core of the threading edge dislocations.

A simple built-on-chip PLL jitter measurement circuit, which utilizes the vernier delay line principle, transforms timing difference signals into digital words and has a self calibration capability to minimize the mismatched error caused by the process variation, is proposed and demonstrated.

In this study we content analyzed online discussion of several senior-high-school groups on a forum of a virtual physics laboratory in Taiwan. The analysis was conducted in terms of participation rate, social cues, interaction types, and cognitive and metacognitive skills. We compared the result patterns of two discussion conditions (R-condition versus NR-condition) and investigated how the quality of message content changed in the processes of discussion. In the R-condition, participants were required to reply to the thread before they were allowed to read other messages on the forum, whereas participants in the NR-condition were not restricted to this demand. The results showed that for both conditions, the most frequently involved interaction type was "direct response", and the most frequently used cognitive skill was "elementary clarification". For the R-condition, fewer participants strayed from the discussion topics, but smaller percentage of message ideas contained metacognitive components in comparison to the NR-condition.

This study implements a networked peer assessment system based on the use of a Vee heuristic. Using this system, students submit their homework (relating to designing science activities) via the underlying network facility. They then assess each other's homework by offering suggestions - again, through the network. Students then modify their original designs based on the suggestions that they receive. This procedure is repeated for two or three consecutive rounds. In this process, each student functions as an author, a reviewer, and an adapter. This learning model allows students to further develop their critical thinking skills. Preliminary peer assessment results revealed that the networked peer-assessment model and Vee heuristic facilitated pre-service science teachers to continuously progress when designing science activities.

Constructivist Internet-based learning environments are advocated by contemporary educators, but few studies investigated students' preferences toward the environments for learning a specific school subject such as science. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a questionnaire to explore students' preferences toward constructivist Internet-based science learning environments. The questionnaire included eight scales: ease of use, relevance, multiple sources, student negotiation, cognitive apprenticeship, reflective thinking, critical judgment and epistemological awareness. The questionnaire responses were gathered from 853 Taiwan high school students. Through factor analysis, these scales revealed highly satisfactory validity and reliability in assessing students' perceptions for Internet-based science learning environments. The students' responses also showed that they strongly preferred the Internet-based learning environments that could connect scientific knowledge with real life situations. Moreover, female students tended to place more emphasis on the instructional guidance offered by the Internet-based environments for science learning, as well as the presentation of scientific knowledge in authentic contexts than did male students. Future research and the implications for Internet-based instruction derived from this study were also discussed.
