Item type:Item, Electrohydrodynamic-assisted Assembly of Hierarchically Structured, 3D Crumpled Nanostructures for Efficient Solar Conversions(2016-12-07) ;Ishihara, Hidetaka ;Chen, Yen-Chang ;De Marco, Nicholas ;Lin, OliverHuang, Chih-MengThe tantalizing prospect of harnessing the unique properties of graphene crumpled nanostructures continues to fuel tremendous interest in energy storage and harvesting applications. However, the paper ball-like, hard texture, and closed-sphere morphology of current 3D graphitic nanostructure production not only constricts the conductive pathways but also limits the accessible surface area. Here, we report new insights into electrohydrodynamically-generated droplets as colloidal nanoreactors in that the stimuli-responsive nature of reduced graphene oxide can lead to the formation of crumpled nanostructures with a combination of open structures and doubly curved, saddle-shaped edges. In particular, the crumpled nanostructures dynamically adapt to non-spherical, polyhedral shapes under continuous deposition, ultimately assembling into foam-like microstructures with a highly accessible surface area and spatially interconnected transport pathways. The implementation of such crumpled nanostructures as three-dimensional rear contacts for solar conversion applications realize benefits of a high aspect ratio, electrically addressable and energetically favorable interfaces, and substantial enhancement of both short-circuit currents and fill-factors compared to those made of planar graphene counterparts. Further, the 3D crumpled nanostructures may shed lights onto the development of effective electrocatalytic electrodes due to their open structure that simultaneously allows for efficient water flow and hydrogen escape.Item type:Item, The investigation of donor-acceptor compatibility in bulk-heterojunction polymer systems(2013-07-22) ;Huang, Jen-Hsien ;Hsiao, Yu-Sheng ;Richard, Eric ;Chen, Chun-ChaoChen, PeilinThe fullerene derivative, indene-C-60 bisadduct (ICBA), has been introduced into poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) to improve the efficiency of P3HT-based devices. However, we found that ICBA is not suitable for most low bandgap polymers. In this study, we have correlated the cell performance with surface energy between the donor and acceptor materials in a bulk-heterojunction cell. These results show that higher photocurrent can be attributed to the morphology improvement induced by larger surface energy difference (Delta gamma) between the low bandgap polymer and fullerene. These results also suggest that synthetic strategies which adjust the Delta gamma between donor and acceptor should be considered. Good electrical and optical coupling of the two sub-cells is achieved by using a carefully designed MoO(3)/Al/ZnO layer, which leads to a power coversion efficiency of 5.1%. The results demonstrate that effective connection between polymer bulk heterojunctions can be realized by this facile metal-oxide interlayer.Item type:Item, Vertical Phase Separation in Poly(3-hexylthiophene): Fullerene Derivative Blends and its Advantage for Inverted Structure Solar Cells(2009-04-23) ;Xu, Zheng ;Chen, Li-Min ;Yang, Guanwen ;Huang, Chun-HaoHou, JianhuiA method which enables the investigation of the buried interfaces without altering the properties of the polymer films is used to study vertical phase separation of spin-coated poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):fullerene derivative blends. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis reveals the P3HT enrichment at the free (air) surfaces and abundance of fullerene derivatives at the organic/substrate interfaces. The vertical phase separation is attributed to the surface energy difference of the components and their interactions with the substrates. This inhomogeneous distribution of the donor and acceptor components significantly affects photovoltaic device performance and makes the inverted device structure a promising choice.Item type:Item, ZnO nano-ridge structure and its application in inverted polymer solar cell(2009-12-01) ;Sekine, Nobuyuki ;Chou, Cheng-Hsuan ;Kwan, Wei Lek ;Yang, Yang應用化學系We report a unique nano-ridge structure of zinc oxide (ZnO) and its application in high performance inverted polymer solar cells. The ZnO nano-ridge structure was formed by a sol-gel process using a ramp annealing method. As the solvent slowly evaporated due to the low heating rate, there was sufficient time for the gel particles to structurally relax and pile up, resulting in a dense and undulated film. Nano-ridges with peak as high as 120 nm and valley to valley distance of about 500 nm were formed. This film provided an effective hole blocking layer and also an increased interfacial area for electron collection. An inverted bulk heterojunction polymer solar cell was fabricated using the ZnO nano-ridge film as the electron collecting layer. The device showed a high power conversion efficiency of 4.00%, an improvement of about 25% over similar solar cells made with a planar film of ZnO nanoparticles. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.
