A hardware/firmware system co-design has been proposed in this work to protect display electronic products against system-level electrostatic discharge (ESD) transient disturbance. By including transient detection circuit, the firmware can execute system recovery procedure to recover all electrical functions under system-level ESD tests. The transient detection circuit is designed to detect different positive and negative fast electrical transients and verified in a 0.13 mu m CMOS process. The experimental results have confirmed that the proposed hardware/firmware design can successfully improve the susceptibility of display products against system level ESD zapping.

An ESD protection circuit including a discharge device, a first detection circuit, and a second detection circuit. The discharge device provides a discharge path between a first power rail and a second power rail when the discharge device is activated. The discharge device stops providing the discharge path when the discharge device is de-activated. The first detection circuit is coupled between the first and the second power rails. The first detection circuit activates the discharge device when an ESD event occurs in the first power rail. The second detection circuit de-activates the discharge device when the ESD event does not occur in the first power rail.

A transient detection circuit including a detecting unit, a setting unit, and a memory unit. The transient detection circuit provides an information signal to an external instrument when an electrostatic discharge (ESD) event occurs. The detecting unit is coupled between a first power line and a second power line for detecting the ESD event. The setting unit sets a level of a first node according to the detection result. The memory unit controls the information signal according to the level of the first node. The information signal is at a first level when the ESD event occurs in the first power line.

A digital converter including a first adjustment unit and a first transient detection unit. The first adjustment unit adjusts amplitude of an electrostatic discharge (ESD) pulse to generate a first adjustment signal when an ESD event occurs in a first power line and a second power line is at a complementary level. The first transient detection unit generates a first digital code according to the first adjustment signal.

A transient detection circuit coupled between a first power line and a second power line and including a first control unit, a setting unit, and a voltage regulation unit. The first control unit generates a first control signal. The first control signal is at a first level when an electrostatic discharge (ESD) event occurs. The first control signal is at a second level when the ESD event does not occur. The setting unit sets a first node. The first node is set at the second level when the first control signal is at the first level. The voltage regulation unit regulates the first node. The voltage regulation unit regulates the level of the first node at the second level when the first control signal is at the second level.

A new transient detection circuit for on-chip protection design against system-level electrical-transient disturbance is proposed in this paper. The circuit function to detect positive or negative electrical transients under system-level electrostatic-discharge (ESD) and electrical-fast-transient (EFT) testing conditions has been investigated by HSPICE simulation and verified in silicon chip. The experimental results in a 0.18-mu m complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process have confirmed that the new proposed on-chip transient detection circuit can successfully memorize the occurrence of system-level electrical-transient disturbance events. The output of the proposed on-chip transient detection circuit can be used as a firmware index to execute the system recovery procedure. With hardware/firmware codesign, the transient disturbance immunity of microelectronic products equipped with CMOS integrated circuits under system-level ESD or EFT tests can be significantly improved.

On-chip power-rail electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection circuit designed with active ESD detection function is the key role to significantly improve ESD robustness of CMOS integrated circuits (ICs). Four power-rail ESD clamp circuits with different ESD-transient detection circuits were fabricated in a 0.18-mu m CMOS process and tested to compare their system-level ESD susceptibility, which are named as power-rail ESD clamp circuits with typical RC-based detection, PMOS feedback, NMOS+PMOS feedback, and cascaded PMOS feedback in this work. During the system-level ESD test, where the ICs in a system have been powered up, the feedback loop used in the power-rail ESD clamp circuits provides the lock function to keep the ESD-clamping NMOS in a "latch-on" state. The latch-on ESD-clamping NMOS, which is often drawn with a larger device dimension to sustain high ESD level, conducts a huge current between the power lines to perform a latchup-like failure after the system-level ESD test. A modified power-rail ESD clamp circuit is proposed to solve this problem. The proposed power-rail ESD clamp circuit can provide high enough chip-level ESD robustness, and without suffering the latchup-like failure during the system-level ESD test.

A new silicon controlled rectifier (SCR)-based transient detection circuit for on-chip protection design against system-level electrical transient disturbance is proposed. The circuit function to detect positive or negative electrical transients during system-level electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrical fast transient (EFT) tests has been verified in silicon chip. The experimental results in a 0.18-mu m CMOS process have confirmed that the new proposed detection circuit can successfully memorize the occurrence of system-level electrical transient disturbance events. The detection results can be cooperated with firmware design to execute system recovery procedures, therefore the immunity of microelectronic systems against system-level ESD or EFT tests can be effectively improved.
