Item type:Item, Hydrogen Bonding-Induced H-Aggregation for Fluorescence Turn-On of the GFP Chromophore: Supramolecular Structural Rigidity(1970-01-01) ;Tsai, Meng-Shiue ;Tsai, Sung-Yu ;Huang, Yi-Fan ;Wang, Chien-LungSun, Shih-ShengTo turn on the fluorescence of the native green fluorescence protein (GFP) chromophore, 4-hydroxybenzylidene-dimethylimidazolinone (HBDI), in an artificial supramolecular system has been a challenging task, because it requires high local environmental rigidity. This work shows that the formation of H-aggregates of an HBDI-containing organogelator results in two orders of magnitude fluorescence enhancement (phi(f)=2.9 vs. 0.02 %), in which the inter-HBDI OH...OH H-bonds play a crucial role. The aggregation-induced fluorescence enhancement of HBDI has important implications on the origin of the high fluorescence quantum efficiency of HBDI in the GFP beta-barrel and on the supramolecular strategy for a full fluorescence recovery of HBDI. These results reveal a new approach to designing rigid chromophore aggregates for high-performance optoelectronic properties.Item type:Item, Cascade One-Pot Synthesis of Orange-Red-Fluorescent Polycyclic Cinnolino[2,3-f]phenanthridin-9-ium Salts by Palladium(II)-Catalyzed C-H Bond Activation of 2-Azobiaryl Compounds and Alkenes(1970-01-01) ;Jayakumar, Jayachandran ;Vedarethinam, Guganchandar ;Hsiao, Huan-Chang ;Sun, Shang-YouChuang, Shih-ChingQuaternary ammonium salts were synthesized in moderate to good yields through double oxidative C-H bond activation on azobenzenes. The mechanism of the highly regioselective reaction of 2-azobiaryls with alkenes to give orange-red-fluorescent cinnolino[2,3-f]phenanthridin-9-ium salts and 15H-cinnolino[2,3-f]phenanthridin-9-ium-10-ide is proposed to involve ortho C-H olefination of the 2-azobiaryl compound with the alkene, intramolecular aza-Michael addition, concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD), reductive elimination, and oxidation.Item type:Item, Vibrational and rotational structure and excited-state dynamics of pyrene(1970-01-01) ;Baba, Masaaki ;Saitoh, Motohisa ;Kowaka, Yasuyuki ;Taguma, KunioYoshida, Kazuto"Vibrational level structure in the S-0 (1)A(g) and S-1 B-1(3u) states of pyrene was investigated through analysis of fluorescence excitation spectra and dispersed fluorescence spectra for single vibronic level excitation in a supersonic jet and through referring to the results of ab initio theoretical calculation. The vibrational energies are very similar in the both states. We found broad spectral feature in the dispersed fluorescence spectrum for single vibronic level excitation with an excess energy of 730 cm(-1). This indicates that intramolecular vibrational redistribution efficiently occurs at small amounts of excess energy in the S-1 B-1(3u) state of pyrene. We have also observed a rotationally resolved ultrahigh-resolution spectrum of the 0(0)(0) band. Rotational constants have been determined and it has been shown that the pyrene molecule is planar in both the S-0 and S-1 states, and that its geometrical structure does not change significantly upon electronic excitation. Broadening of rotational lines with the magnetic field by the Zeeman splitting of M-J levels was very small, indicating that intersystem crossing to the triplet state is minimal. The long fluorescence lifetime indicates that internal conversion to the S-0 state is also slow. We conclude that the similarity of pyrene's molecular structure and potential energy curve in its S-0 and S-1 states is the main cause of the slow radiationless transitions."
