This paper demonstrates a small-size 2.4-GHz CMOS active bandpass filter with two transmission zeros using a lumped stepped-impedance ring resonator. To obtain low insertion loss and small size, four high-Q active inductors using 0.18 gm CMOS transistors only are employed in the design. The measured insertion loss is 2.9-dB at 2.4 GHz center frequency with two transmission zeros located at 2.1 GHz and 3.1 GHz, respectively. By tuning the bias currents of active inductors, the center frequency has 1.4 GHz tuning range and the 1-dB bandwidth can be adjusted in the range of 190 MHz to 260 MHz. The demonstrated active filter occupies a small chip area of 0.47 mm x 0.33 mm excluding I/O pads and has 24 dB noise figure. Thus, an active filter with a preceding two-stage common-source LNA for suppression of noise of the active filter is also demonstrated and the resulting LNA + active filter has 6 dB noise figure. The power consumption of the active filter core and the LNA core is 9 mW and 7.2 mW, respectively.

Dual-mode dual-band bandpass filters are developed based on a single ring resonator. The ring is composed of two half-wave stepped-impedance resonators with short-circuited ends, which are connected to ground vias by short high-impedance sections, providing inductive coupling between the resonating modes and hence bandwidth control. Experimental filters are fabricated and measured for validation. Skew-symmetric feed structure is employed in the first circuit for enhancing the frequency selectivity around the second band. Source-load coupling is incorporated with the second design to create transmission zeros on both sides of the two passbands, greatly improving the performance in transition bands. The measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

An ultra-compact second-order bandpass filter with stopband extension is implemented with shorted ring resonators. In the design, the two resonances of the structure are separately controlled by electric and magnetic coupling between the rings. Two transmission zeros on both sides of the passband are created through the multipath effect between the 1/0 ports. Circuit miniaturization is accomplished by attaching an open low-impedance stub to each shorted ring. The upper stopband with a rejection better than 30 dB is extended to 4.32 times the passband frequency. The circuit area is only 8.8% of that of a conventional dual-mode ring resonator filter. Measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

A new configuration for ring resonator is proposed for bandpass filter design with size reduction and stopband extension. The planar self-coupled ring is twisted at its middle and a short CPW section is implemented in the ground plane for the three-dimensional interconnection. The resonator has two resonance modes and the filter possesses one transmission zero on the high side of the passband. With a pair of open low-impedance stubs attached to the ring, the circuit has an area of only 9.65% of that of the conventional ring resonator filter, and the upper stopband is extended up to higher than five times the center frequency. Measured results of a fabricated prototype circuit show good agreement with the simulation.

A compact quadruple-mode ring resonator is proposed for synthesis of a quasi-elliptic bandpass filter. The resonator is composed of four half-wavelength rings connected to a single grounded via. For miniaturization, the ring areas are overlapped and the crossovers are implemented by short CPW sections in the ground plane. As a result, the resonator uses about 50% area of a conventional dual-mode ring resonator filter. Among the four rings, all coupling coefficients are of inductive type realized by shorted high-impedance and coupled-line sections. Two zeros are created by capacitive source-load coupling, and the response is synthesized by the coupling matrix method. Agreement between simulation and measurement results of a realized circuit validates the approach.

Dual-mode ring resonator filter is designed to have a relatively wide passband with a miniaturized circuit area. The miniaturization is achieved by folding the ring trace to a spiral configuration. The two degenerate modes are split up by an asymmetric inductive perturbation. As a result, the circuit area is only 29% of that of a conventional ring. The strong I/O coupling required by the wide passband property is implemented by adding an impedance transformer for matching the external quality factor (Q(ext)) with the circuit bandwidth. Measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

A dual-mode ring resonator filter is devised to have a miniaturized size and its performance investigated. By placing an inductive perturbation at an asymmetric position, with respect to the input and output ports, two transmission zeros are created on the both sides of the passband. The miniaturization is achieved by folding the microstrip ring trace into a spiral configuration, incorporating with metallic via-holes and coplanar waveguide sections as the interconnection. The circuit size is only 20.5% of that of a conventional ring resonator. Measured results show good agreement with the simulation.
