Item type:Item, System dynamics of corporate strategy implementation - An analysis of Taiwan Chunghwa Telecom's ADSL initiative(2005-01-01) ;Mao Chi-Kuo ;Ho Hsu-Hui ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementTaiwan Chunghwa Telecom's ADSL initiative launched in Q4 2000 has created a bench marking record of 40 subscribers /1000 population for year 2001. This paper employs system dynamics to the modeling of the implementation processes of Chunghwa's ADSL initiative. Validity of the model is tested and managerial implications are drawn. The research results indicate that the SD modeling techniques, incorporated with the relevant theories, can be effectively applied to simulate the implementation processes of a large-scale corporate strategy endeavor. Different effects resulted from alternative policy measures can be easily tested. A further refined SD model based on this research should be able to serve as a corporate strategy planning tool for a telecom company.Item type:Item, Using System Dynamics Analysis for Performance Evaluation of IoT Enabled One-Stop Logistic Services(2014) ;Hsu, Abby P. T. ;Lee, W. T. ;Trappey, Amy J. C. ;Chang, Ai-CheTrappey, Charles V.This research focuses on a methodology applying Internet of Things (IoT) technology and enabling the material procurement process improvement of a manufacturer. The one-stop logistic service provider (1SLP) is an integrator that assembles the resources, capabilities, and technologies of supply chain networks to design and implement comprehensive logistic service solutions. This research develops the IoT enabled 1SLP process framework and uses a case example to demonstrate the improved process with a system dynamic (SD) assessment. The current material procurement process of the case requires excessive operation times and the related data do not integrate with the supply chain related information. The 1SLP offers to-be (improved) logistics support incorporating IoT to shorten the operational time and enhance the information flow accurately and transparently. For the SD assessment, the results show that the to-be model improves the IoT process efficiency with the IoT when benchmarked with the as-is current processes.Item type:Item, Using System Dynamics Analysis for Performance Evaluation of IoT Enabled One-Stop Logistic Services(2015-01-01) ;Hsu, Abby P. Simultaneously, the development of their major weapon systems has evolved from foreign weapons acquisition to independent development due to establishing research and development (R&D) capabilities. However, competitive pressures in the international arms market has finally led these countries to return to foreign acquisition, consequently rapidly eroding their R&D capability. Balancing foreign acquisition and independent development is a long-term strategic problem for NICs. This study applies the system dynamics methodology to construct a weapon systems development model for Taiwan. This model is used to analyse the impact of acquisition policy. The results here indicate three major possible growth curves for weapon systems R&D capability based on alternative weapon systems acquisition policies.Item type:Item, Designing simulation software to facilitate learning of quantitative system dynamics skills: a case in Taiwan(2000-12-01) ;Jan, TS ;Jan, CG ;管理科學系Department of Management ScienceA case study in Taiwan reveals that newcomers to system dynamics tend to use qualitative models without performing simulation. To develop quantitative simulation skills, this study identifies simulation barriers in the early stages and proposes an evolutionary approach to overcome such barriers. The simulation learning process is separated into two stages: the initial similation skill's development and the system dynamics expertise. A special purpose simulation software is then designed as well as a course established to test and evaluate the approach to the initial stage. The results of the study indicate that the approach with the software can help facilitate learners in developing initial simulation skills with a model scale of about two levels and forty equations. Thus, different stages require various approaches to the learning of quantitative system dynamics skills.Item type:Item, A four-role model of the automotive industry development in developing countries: a case in Taiwan(2004-11-01) ;Jan, TS ;Hsiao, CT ;管理科學系Department of Management ScienceDeveloping countries often nurture the automotive industry as a path to technological and economic development. Initially, the government often sets up policies to protect the industry, but eventually the industry must face global competition. The process of industrial development for developing countries is complex and dynamic because many roles are involved in the development process. This study analyses the characteristics of the automobile industry in developing countries and the structure of the automotive industry system in Taiwan to explore the system behaviour using system dynamics methodology. The study proposes a four-role model to identify the structure where consumers play an important and subtle role in the development process. The implications for international leading automotive firms, the survival strategies of domestic companies, and the policies for developing country governments are also discussed.Item type:Item, The application of system dynamics to water resources sustainable use for the Kaopin river basin(2005) ;Yang, Chao-Chung ;Shan, Hsin-Yu ;Lee, Han-Keng ;Hsu, Shao-huaChen, Tze-WeiThe demand for water in Kaopin river basin has increased significantly in recent years owing to industrial growth and increasing living standards. This situation not only raises the crisis of water deficit but also brings serious problem of water pollution. Hence, any suitable strategy is required to consider simultaneously the effect between water quantity and water quality. A system dynamics model is including the critical feedback structures in the system. Simulating the model shows the effect of the system structure on policy interventions. Therefore, system dynamics is well-suited to analyzing problems whose behavior is governed by feedback relationships and which have a long-term time horizon. Finally, this study addressed two major problems: 1) water deficit, 2) water pollution and then makes the appropriate strategy to avoid the huge impact between water deficit and water pollution and also prohibit the time delay of strategy.Item type:Item, A system dynamics model of the semiconductor industry development in Taiwan(2005-10-01) ;Chen, JH ;Jan, TS ;管理科學系Department of Management ScienceTaiwan has become the fourth largest semiconductor manufacturer worldwide within only 25 years. Taiwan's success in developing its semiconductor industry has been widely recognized. Building a semiconductor industry in a developing country is costly, risky, and requires long-term accumulations of capital, technology, human resources, and production capacity. The development process depends on environmental interactions, which should be studied in an integrated and holistic manner. Using system dynamics methodology, this study analyses the development experience of the Taiwanese semiconductor industry, in order to provide better insight into the long-term industrial development process. The study also simulates the proposed model in one historical setting and two future scenarios. Implications for the development of the semiconductor industry in Taiwan and other Asian countries are discussed.Item type:Item, Policy assessment for conjunctive-use of surface and subsurface water using system dynamics(2007) ;Ho, Chih-Chao ;Yang, Chao-Chung ;Chang, Liang-Cheng ;Leung, Wai-YiYeh, Ming-ShengThe conjunctive use of surface and subsurface water is used commonly for offering stable supplies in water resources management. Owing to the water distribution problem is spatial dependency and temporal dependency, the new water resource intervention make system getting more complicated. Conventionally, optimization distribution model' has been taken to solve such complex allocation problem. However, the determination of constraints and objective functions must be under the settled system and the resolving process is subject to the selected optimal methodology. Hence, 'optimization distribution model' is difficult to solve the problem of capacity expansion and system expansion caused by policy postponed This study provides a powerful object oriented simulation model, system dynamics, alternative to optimization distribution model for representing complexity and variation of systems and analyzing their dynamics behavior. This approach uses a perspective based on stock-flow diagram which exploit system structure and operation procedures simultaneously hidden in modelers mind.. Finally, a case study in southern Taiwan is adopted herein to show the flexible and versatile of proposed approach.
