The growth of electronic-markets (e-markets) necessitates the processing of many commerce protocols (processes). Each protocol handles different messages and flows of transactions among customers, merchants and intermediaries. Developing applications for each commerce protocol is costly and impractical. Accordingly, developing a flexible model of Internet commerce to support various commerce protocols is important. Moreover, the emergence of intermediaries is inevitable as e-markets grow. This work analyzes various trading processes and the roles of intermediaries, and proposes a flexible agent-based model of intermediary-centric commerce. The proposed model applies basic transaction functions to compose various commerce protocols. Agent technology and an event-driven approach are employed to process flexibly the complex trading interactions among the participants. The agent-based approach enhances scalability and makes complex trading interactions more tractable. Furthermore, an agent-based prototype system is deployed. The novel system is extensible and facilitates flexible trading interactions to support various commerce protocols in e-markets. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Seeking information from websites has become an essential part of a contractor's procurement undertaking. as more and more procurement websites become available on the Internet, Websites host extremely lame amounts of information: a keyword search, therefore, is often more efficient than browsing via an index. However. in order to find the desired information. it may be necessary to enter keywords using a trial-and-error process. This research recognizes that professional procurement experience can help users search website information more effectively, by using fewer keywords. and so proposes a learning model and suggestion model that can capture such experience. thus guiding inexperienced users in their search. Experiments, evaluating the performance of the system, were also conducted. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Customers usually change their purchase interests in the short product life cycle of the e-commerce environment. Therefore, recent transaction patterns should have a greater effect on the customer preferences. From the seller's point of view, an e-commerce recommender system should focus on the profit of recommendation. This study proposes a new sequential pattern mining algorithm that incorporates the concepts of frequency, recency, and profit to discover frequent, recent, and profitable sequential patterns, called FRP-sequences. Based on the discovered sequential patterns, this study develops a collaborative recommender system to improve recommendation accuracy for customers and the profit of recommendation from the seller's perspective. The proposed recommender system clusters customers, discovers FRP-sequences for each cluster, and then recommends items to the target customers based on their frequent, recent, and profitable FRP-sequences. In the stage of discovering FRP-sequences, the transaction patterns near the current time period and profitable items are weighted more heavily to improve profit. This study uses a public food mart database to determine the performance of the proposed approach, and compares it with traditional recommendation models. The proposed system performs better than traditional recommendation models in both recommendation accuracy and profit.

Currently, the major marketing channel for flower suppliers and retailers in Taiwan is the flower wholesale market. However, when the retailers make purchases in the wholesale market, the dominant suppliers offer poor service, and the retailers find it inconvenient to collect information on the price of flowers. Our study shows that the E-Commerce mechanism of the e-marketplace can improve trading efficiency and lower the cost of collecting information as well as the purchase price. According to our analysis, the e- marketplace can use ''a combination of pictures, literal description, and regulated classiffication'' to introduce the quality of flower products. By Fuzzy Delphi, the key factors which affect the operation modes between the retailer and the e-marketplace are ''cooperation on urgent orders'', ''accuracy of order processing'', and ''order processing efficiency''. Then, based on the three key factors, we use Fuzzy Multiple Criteria Decision Making to find what operation modes the e-marketplace should take to cooperate with the retailer. Retailers find the three operation modes ''actively placing orders'', ''jointly negotiating prices'', and ''free bidding'' equally compatible, so we suggest that the e- marketplace should provide these modes at the same time for retailer use and later the retailers can adjust the modes according to their business performance. The improvement of service quality so as to enhance customer satisfaction has been widely mentioned over the past few decades. However, a creative and systematic way of achieving higher customer satisfaction in terms of service quality is rarely discussed. Recently, TRIZ, a Russian acronym which means "Theory of Inventive Problem Solving," has been proven to be a well-structured and innovative way to solve problems in both technical and non-technical areas. In this study, a systematic model based on the TRIZ methodology is proposed to generate creative solutions for service quality improvement. This is done by examining first the determinants of service quality based on a comprehensive qualitative study in the electronic commerce sector. Then the correlation between the imprecise requirements from customers and the determinants of service quality is analyzed with Fuzzy Quality Function Deployment (QFD) in order to identify the critical determinants relating to customer satisfaction. After which, the corresponding TRIZ engineering parameters can be effectively applied in the TRIZ contradiction matrix to identify the inventive principles. A case study is illustrated to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in an e-commerce company, and its results are presented to show the applicability of the TRIZ methodology in the e-service sector.
