A supercontinuum generation system is developed, which consists of an erbium-doped fiber ring laser, an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, and a 100-m highly nonlinear fiber. Through nonlinear polarization rotation, the fiber ring laser generates a train of noise-like pulses in the form of repetitive picosecond pulse packets consisting of femtosecond noise-like fine temporal structures. The noise-like pulses are amplified before being sent into the highly nonlinear fiber. As a result, an octave-spanning supercontinuum from 1177 nm to 2449 nm is obtained, which has a 20-dB spectral width of 980 nm. Because of the nonlinearity of the fiber amplifier, the duration of the noise-like pulses is shortened while their average power is enhanced. However, the enhanced pulse energy makes the key contribution to the spectral broadening of the resulting spuercontinuum in this study since the highly nonlinear fiber is so long that the effect of the pulse compression on supercontinuum generation is weak.

A parallel-type, pump-shared (PTPS) scheme linear-cavity laser array (LCLA) is proposed and numerically studied. Power-equalization of multiwavelength fiber lasers can be achieved by varying the pumping power ratio, length of the erbium-doped fiber or reflectivity of grating reflector for the individual channels. Before and after power-equalization, the maximum power variation among seven equal-spaced channels, ranging from 1530 to 1560 nm, is 5.8 and 0.2 dB, respectively. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Mode-locked fiber lasers have many important applications in science and engineering. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time a 110 GHz high repetition rate mode-locked fiber laser using a silicon-based micro-ring resonator (SMRR) to act as an intra-cavity optical comb filter, as well as an optical nonlinear element. No electrical bias for the SMRR is required to reduce free carrier absorption. The SMRR has a free spectral range of 0.88 nm, enforcing laser mode-locking at the 110 GHz high rate. The optical nonlinearity of the SMRR also supports the dissipative four-wave mixing effect for generating the mode-locked optical pulse trains. The mode-locked pulse-width, optical 3 dB spectral bandwidth and the time-bandwidth product (TBP) are experimentally measured under different pump currents to the erbium-doped fiber-amplifier module inside the laser cavity. The relative intensity noise and the line-width of the proposed laser are also evaluated. Furthermore, a long-term monitoring is performed. The experimental results show that the optical pulse train generated by the SMRR-based mode-locked fiber laser has a 2.6 ps pulse-width (pump current at 400 mA) at a 110 GHz high repetition rate, narrow line-width (1 kHz), high stability (under observation of an hour), and nearly Gaussian transform-limited (TBP is 0.455).

In this demonstration, we experimentally investigate a dual-ring fiber laser architecture to achieve dual-wavelength-tunable by utilizing the self-injected Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) mechanism. Here, two tunable bandpass filters (TBFs) are utilized in the proposed laser structure to obtain the dual-wavelength with single-longitudinal-mode (SLM). The different mode-spacing of the proposed dual-wavelength fiber laser can also be tuned between 20.8 and 1.3 nm, due to the effective gain amplification of FP-LD. Moreover, we can employ the different FP-LDs with various gain distributions to achieve wide wavelength range tuning.

In this work, we propose and demonstrate a multi-wavelength laser source produced by utilizing a C-band reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) with a dual-ring fiber cavity. Here, the laser cavity consists of an RSOA, a 1 x 2 optical coupler, a 2 x 2 optical coupler and a polarization controller. As a result, thirteen to eighteen wavelengths around the L band could be generated simultaneously when the bias current of the C-band RSOA was driven at 30-70 mA. In addition, the output stabilities of the power and wavelength are also discussed.

An all-fiber S-band mode-locked Er-doped fiber ring laser operated at 1503 nm is experimentally demonstrated by utilizing the polarization additive-pulse mode-locking (P-APM) mechanism. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first P-APM mode-locked fiber laser operating in the S-band. The gain medium is an S-band Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) composed of two Er-doped fiber stages with the technique of depressed-cladding to cut off the fundamental mode. Stable single-pulse operation is achieved within the available pump power range. Besides, characterization of the S-band EDFA module, such as the wavelength dependences of the gain and noise figure, the slope efficiency, as well as the dependence of the pump power on the gain for different input powers is performed. In addition, analysis of the proposed S-band mode-locked fiber laser, such as the pump power dependence of the pulse-width and optical bandwidth, and pulse-width compression is also provided.

Laser dynamics of a 10 GHz 0.55 ps asynchronously harmonic modelocked Er-doped fiber soliton laser are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Theoretical analyses based on the master equation model solved by the variational method have indicated that all the pulse parameters of the laser output will exhibit complicated slow periodic variations in the asynchronous soliton modelocking (ASM) mode. New experimental methods based on analyzing directly the RF spectra of the ASM laser output have been developed to accurately determine the sinusoidal variation of the pulse timing and the pulse center wavelength for the first time. It is found that the pulse center wavelength variation can be as large as 1 nm half-peak-to-peak and the pulse timing variation can be as large as 3 ps. The consistency among all the experimental data and theoretical prediction is carefully examined and the results indicate that the ASM pulse dynamics observed experimentally are in good agreement with those obtained from the theoretical analyses.
