A novel segmented polyurethane(Pu)/clay nanocomposite has been synthesized by polyurethane and organoclay. 12 aminolauric acid (12COOH) and benzidine (BZD) were used as swelling agents to treat Na+-montmorillonite and for forming organoclay (12COOH-mont acid BZD-mont) through ion exchange. The nanometer-scale silicate layers of organoclay were completely exfoliated in PU in the cases of 1, 3 and 5% 12COOH-mont/PU and in the cases of 1 and 3% BZD-mont/PU nanocomposites as confirmed by X-ray diffraction pattern and transmission electron microscopy studies. The segmented structures of PU were not interfered by the presence of the silicate layers in these nanocomposites as evidenced by their glass transition and degree of phase separation from differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared measurements. A two-fold increase in the tensile strength and a three-fold increase in the elongation were found for 1% BZD-mont/PU as compared to that of pure PU. Additionally, both 1% 12COOH-mont/PU and 1% BZD-mont/PU exhibited lower water absorption properties than that of pure PU. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Clay-polyimide [3,3', 4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride-4,4'-oxydianiline (BTDA-ODA)] nanocomposites were synthesized from ODA-modified montmorillonite (organoclay) and poly(amic acid). The layered silicates of organoclay were intercalated by polyimide (BTDA-ODA), as confirmed by X-ray diffraction and by transmission electron microscopy, and the tensile mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were measured. It was found that the modulus and the maximum stress of these organoclay/BTDA-ODA nanocomposites were much higher than those of pure BTDA-ODA: a twofold increase in the modulus and a one-half-fold increase in the maximum stress in the case of 7/93 organoclay-BTDA-ODA. In addition, the elongation-for-break of organoclay/BTDA-ODA nanocomposites is even slightly higher than that of pure BTDA-ODA, which is a sharp contrast to that of conventional inorganics-filled polymer composites. The hard-segment phase thermal transitions and heat-resistance of benzidine-modified-montmorillonite (BZD-Mont)/polyurethane nanocomposites of different hard segment contents were found to be affected by a small amount of BZD-Mont. In particular, the presence of less than 5 wt% layered silicates from BZD-Mont can result in hard segments not only having a more thermally stable long-range order and a higher melting temperature, but also showing a loss of crystallinity of the hard segment in polyurethane. Additionally, the degradation temperature of BZD-Mont/polyurethane nanocomposite was slightly higher than that of pure polyurethane.

Hydrogen bonding in the hard segments of the synthesized montmorillonite/polyurethane nanocomposites of various hard segment ratios was found to decrease with the increasing amount of montmorillonite regardless of the hard segment ratios, but reached plateau values at 5 wt% montmorillonite concentration. The maximal reductions of the hydrogen bonding in the polyurethane nanocomposites ranged from 20 to 37%, depending on the hard segment ratios as compared to that in the pure polyurethane. The maximal strength and the elongation at break of the polyurethane nanocomposites increased dramatically as compared to that of pristine polyurethane, and the maximal values occurred at 1 wt% montmorillonite concentration. The thermal properties and the moisture absorption of three types of polyimide/montmorillonite nanocomposite were investigated: 3,3 ' ,4,4 ' -biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride-4,4 ' -oxydianiline (BPDA-ODA); pyromellitic dianhydride-ODA (PMDA-ODA); and 3,3 ' ,4,' -benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride-ODA (BTDA-ODA). The inhibition effect on in-plane coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) and moisture absorption of these polyimide nanocomposites by layered silicates from montmorillonite was found to decrease with the crystallinity in the pristine polyimides. The largest reduction, 30% in in-plane CTE occurred in the case of amorphous BTDA-ODA containing 5 wt % montmorillonite as compared with that of pure BTDA-ODA, while the reduction in in-plane CTE was 20% for the case of semicrystalline BPDA-ODA. The maximum reduction in moisture absorption, 43%, also took place for the case of 3/97 ODA-Mont/BTDA-ODA as compared with that of pure BTDA-ODA, whereas the semicrystalline 1/99 PPD-Mont/BPDA-ODA showed a 30% reduction as compared with that of pure BPDA-ODA. We investigated the effects of montmorillonite (clay) on the crystallization kinetics of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) with isothermal differential scanning calorimetry analyses. The clay was dispersed into the sPS matrix via melt blending on a scale of 1-2 nm or up to about 100 nih, depending on the surfactant treatment. For a crystallization temperature of 240 degreesC, the isothermal crystallization data were fitted well with the Avrami crystallization equation. Crystallization data on the kinetic parameters (i.e., the crystallization rate constant, Avrami exponent, clay content, and clay/surfactant cation-exchange ratio), were also investigated. Experimental results indicated that the crystallization rate constant of the sPS nanocomposite increased with increasing clay content. The clay played a vital role in facilitating the formation on the thermodynamically more favorable all-beta -form crystal when the sPS was melt-crystallized. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Syndiotactic polystyrene/modified-clay nanocomposites have been prepared by solution blending by mixing pure s-PS and organophilic clay with adsorbed cetyl pyridium chloride (CPC) in dichlorobenzene. The dispersability of the clay in syndiotactic polystyrene/modified-clay nanocomposites was studied using X-ray and transmission electron microscopy. The clay is well dispersed into the s-PS matrix using solution blending with scale in 1-2 nm or in a few tenths similar to 100 nm depending on surfactant treatment. The CPC is partially compatible with s-PS and allows syndiotactic polystyrene chains intercalating into clay layers. The crystallization behavior of alpha- and beta -crystals for syndiotactic polystyrene nanocomposite has been thoroughly examined using the Fourier transform infrared and differential scanning calorimetry. Our results further demonstrate that the presence of the clay plays a vital role in facilitating the formation on the thermodynamically more favorable beta form crystal when the s-PS is melt- or cold-crystallized. The poly (acetoxy styrene-co-isobutyl styryl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes)s (PAS-POSS) were synthesized by free radical polymerization and characterized by FTIR, high resolution NMR, FTIR, GPC, and DSC. The results show that the POSS content can be controlled by varying the POSS feed ratios. The interactions between organic components and inorganic POSS core, and the effects of inorganic POSS core on the properties of the resulting hybrids were investigated by high resolution solid state C-13 NMR, Si-29 NMR and FTIR spectra. The results provide detailed understandings of the effects of POSS moiety on properties of hybrid polymers.

A series of poly(hydroxystyrene-co-vinylpyffolidone-co-isobutylstyryl polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes) (PHS-PVP-POSS) hybrid polymers with various POSS contents was prepared by free radical copolymerization of acetoxystyrene, vinylpyrrolidone with styrylisobutylpolyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes (POSS), followed by selective removal of the acetyl protective group. The POSS content of a hybrid polymer can be effectively controlled by varying the feed ratios of reactants. The T-g of the POSS hybrid increases with the POSS content of PHS-PVP-POSS hybrids. The mechanism of T-g enhancement in these PHS-PVP-POSS hybrids was investigated using DSC, FTIR and GPC. The formation of the physically cross-linked POSS in these hybrid polymers trends to restrict polymer chain motion and results in significant T-g increase. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Analyses of the effects of montmorillonite (clay) on the crystallinity and crystallization behavior of syndiotactic polystyrene (s-PS) were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The dispersibility of the clay in s-PS nanocomposites was studied by X-ray and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The clay was dispersed into the s-PS matrix by melt blending on a scale of 1-2 nm or few tenths-100 nm, depending on the surfactant treatment. On adding clay, the crystallization behavior of the s-PS tends to convert into the beta-crystal from the alpha-crystal after being cold-crystallized because the clay plays a vital role in facilitating the formation of the thermodynamically favored beta-form crystal when the s-PS is cold- or melt-crystallized. This phenomenon leads to a change in a conventional mechanism of molecular packing for the s-PS. Evidently, the clay significantly affects the crystallinity and crystallization behavior of the s-PS.
