Item type:Item, A novel broad-band Chebyshev-response rat-race ring coupler(1999-04-01) ;Chang, CY ;Yang, CC ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA novel broad-band rat-race ring coupler with a unit element at each port and an ideal phase inverter at one of the ring arms is proposed and analyzed. Design equations based on Chebyshev equiripple functions are derived, The design curves of equal or unequal power division are also presented, Theoretical data show that the bandwidth of unequal power division with a specific return-loss value increases as the power division ratio increases or decreases from unity, For a 180 degrees hybrid with equal power division (3 dB) and 15-dB return loss, the proposed rat-race ring may have a bandwidth of 4:1. Three circuits of this novel rat-race ring are realized using finite-ground-plane coplanar waveguide. The measured results match very well with the theory.Item type:Item, Broadband CMOS Gilbert Down-Converter Utilizing a Low-Loss Step-Impedance Rat-Race Coupler(2009) ;Wei, Hung-Ju ;Meng, Chinchun ;Yu, Sheng-Wen ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA Broadband Gilbert Down-Converter with step-impedance rat-race coupler is demonstrated using 0.13 mu m standard CMOS technology. The proposed method utilizes higher effective dielectric-constant, phase-inverter and step-impedance techniques simultaneously to make the rat-race coupler more compact (similar to 64% reduction) and phase-balanced over a wide operating bandwidth. The down-converter has NF of 16 dB and LO-to-RF isolation of better than 35 dB. The mixer core consumes 2.9 mA at V(dd)=1.8 V.Item type:Item, A new class of wideband multisection 180 degrees hybrid rings using vertically installed planar couplers(2006-06-01) ;Chi, CH ;Chang, CY ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA new class of wideband multisection 180 degrees hybrid rings using the vertically installed planar (VIP) coupler is proposed. On the basis of the reconfigured ideal single-section 180 degrees hybrid ring (i.e., the 180 degrees hybrid ring with an ideal phase inverter), the multisection 180 degrees hybrid rings can be realized by properly cascading of single-section 180 degrees hybrid rings. Compared with the conventional hybrid ring, the two-section hybrid rings exhibit wide bandwidth, size reduction, and easily achievable high power-division ratios. Design equations based on the equal-ripple functions are derived. Design curves for the equal and unequal power-division ratio are also described. In addition, a cascade of single-section cascadable hybrid rings with a unit element at each I/O port can be used for bandwidth enhancement. Good agreement is obtained between the experimental and simulated results.Item type:Item, A wideband bandpass filter with wide upper stopband using stepped-impedance cascadable 180 degrees hybrid rings(2007-08-01) ;Chi, Chun-Hsiang ;Chang, Chi-Yang ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringThis letter proposes a wideband bandpass filter by cascading two 3-dB stepped-impedance. cascadable 180 degrees hybrid rings with a pair of stepped-impedance lines. Thanks to the stepped-impedance lines, a broad upper stopband is achieved. The stepped-impedance vertically installed planar (VIP) coupler is used to implement the ideal 180 degrees phase inverter and crossovers. The experimental results show that this 2-GHz center frequency, fourth order filter has a 10-dB return loss bandwidth of 92.5% and upper stopband rejection levels of better than -20 dB up to 6.8, GHz. This proposed filter achieves wide passband and broad stopband performance simultaneously.Item type:Item, A silicon monolithic phase-inverter rat-race coupler using spiral coplanar striplines and its application in a broadband Gilbert mixer(2008-08-01) ;Tseng, Sheng-Che ;Meng, Chinchun ;Chang, Chia-Hung ;Chang, Shih-HsienHuang, Guo-WeiThis paper realized a broadband uniplanar phase-inverter rat-race coupler using a standard silicon process, and then analyzed this coupler under a lossy condition. A phase inverter is employed in this coupler, not only to extend the operation bandwidth, but also to generate balanced outputs by providing equal lossy paths, while symmetrical spiral-shaped coplanar striplines (CPSs) are also utilized to shrink the coupler size, as well as to construct a phase inverter in the middle of one of spiral CPSs. The lossy CPS, when designed as a distortionless line, has a real characteristic impedance, and thus, perfect port matching of the coupler can be achieved at the center frequency. The operation frequency of this silicon monolithic rat-race coupler with the size of 0.5 mm(2) is extremely wide and ranges from 5 to 23 GHz. The dissipated loss, transmission coefficient, and isolation of the rat-race coupler are approximately 5.5, -8, and below -25 dB, respectively. In addition, a wideband Gilbert micromixer with an integrated uniplanar phase-inverter rat-race coupler at the local oscillator port is demonstrated using 0.35-mu m SiGe BiCMOS technology. This mixer works from 2.5 to 13 GHz with 12-dB conversion gain, -16-dBm IP(1) (dB), -4-dBm IIP(3), and 14-dB noise figure. The chip size of the mixer with an integrated coupler is approximately 1.4 mm x 1.4 mm.Item type:Item, Synthesis and Design of Generalized Chebyshev Wideband Hybrid Ring Based Bandpass Filters With a Controllable Transmission Zero Pair(2010-12-01) ;Li, Jian-Yu ;Chi, Chun-Hsiang ;Chang, Chi-Yang ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA systematic and analytical method for the exact synthesis of generalized Chebyshev wideband hybrid ring based bandpass filters with a controllable transmission zero pair is developed in this paper. The basic configuration of the proposed filters consists of a hybrid ring, a multi-section short-circuited stub and a multi-section open-circuit stub. In this configuration, the position of the controllable transmission zero pair can be easily designed by setting the impedances of the multi-section short-circuited stub and the multi-section open-circuit stub. According to the position of the controllable transmission zero pair, two kinds of filters are proposed. The filter has a controllable transmission zero pair on the real axis (imaginary frequency) that they can be arranged to improve the group delay flatness. On the other hand, the filter has a controllable transmission zero pair on the imaginary axis (real frequency) and the desired stopband suppression can be obtained by adjusting the optimal position of them. This synthesis method is developed to obtain the impedance value of each line section and ripple factors of the filters with respect to given specifications (center frequency, passband bandwidth and transmission zeros). Two design examples, the fifth-order filter with a controllable imaginary frequency transmission zero pair and the fifth-order filter with a controllable real frequency transmission zero pair, are synthesized and fabricated. The measured results validate and confirm the theoretical predictions.
