We have systematically explored how plasmonic effects influence the characteristics of polymer photovoltaic devices (OPVs) incorporating a blend of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). We blended gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) into the anodic buffer layer to trigger localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), which enhanced the performance of the OPVs without dramatically sacrificing their electrical properties. Steady state photoluminescence (PL) measurements revealed a significant increase in fluorescence intensity, which we attribute to the increased light absorption in P3HT Induced by the LSPR. As a result, the rate of generation of excitons was enhanced significantly. Furthermore, dynamic PL measurements revealed that the LSPR notably reduced the lifetime of photogenerated excitons In the active blend, suggesting that interplay between the surface plasmons and excitons facilitated the charge transfer process. This phenomenon reduced the recombination level of geminate excitons and, thereby, Increased the probability of exciton dissociation. Accordingly, both the photocurrents and fill factors of the OPV devices were enhanced significantly. The primary origin of this improved performance was local enhancement of the electromagnetic field surrounding the Au NPs. The power conversion efficiency of the OPV device incorporating the Au NPs improved to 4.24% from a value of 3.57% for the device fabricated without Au NPs.

An integrated transmitted polarizer and reflective color filters with structure of bilayer metallic nanowire grating on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate substrate was demonstrated by theory, experiment, and numerical simulation. Two kinds of waveguide resonances, which led to the comprehensive characters, were analyzed. The slits in the bilayer metallic grating permit the transmission of TM light (transverse magnetic field) in surface plasmon waveguide mode and prohibit the propagating of TE light (transverse electric field) with wavelengths larger than cutoff value to obtain polarization effect. The lateral guiding mode resonances on the interfaces of the metallic/substrate or metallic/air excite surface plasmon waves with certain wavelengths, which makes a single peak in the reflection spectrum of TM light and dips in transmission for color filtering effect of TM light. The experimental results and theoretical analyses are in good agreement. This new bilayer structure featured with nonabsorption, integrated functions and simple fabrication has a great potential in power saving and thickness reduction for display devices.

Improving spectral photon harvesting is important for thin-film multijunction cells. We show that efficient spectral flux management can be achieved using genetic algorithm-optimized surface plasmon (SP) cavity-resonant type multijunction cells. We also observe that the excitation of the SP quasi-guided mode, Fabry-Perot mode, and SP polariton significantly enhance the photocurrent of multijunction cells. Two types of cavity structures are investigated. For the optimized SP intermediate reflector and bottom-grating cavity, the resonant cavity mode efficiently increases the long-wavelength absorption in the bottom cell by 63.27%, resulting in reduced absorbance asymmetry between the top and the bottom cells. Accordingly, the matched integrated absorbance is increased by 14.92%. For the optimized SP top-and bottom-grating (TBG) cavity, the integrated absorbance and current matching are improved due to the higher transmission through the solar cell front surface and the excitation of the quasi-guided mode with a more localized field in the bottom cell. The matched integrated absorbance is improved by 85.68% for the TBG cavity. (C) 2013 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) [DOI:10.1117/1.OE.52.6.064002]

We applied surface corrugations surrounding the C-aperture on both incident and exit interfaces of the metal film, which can generate surface plasmon (SP) waves coupling to the propagation mode and function as a focusing grating, respectively. Compared with a 60 nm square aperture, the double-corrugated C-aperture can enhance power throughput by five orders of magnitude and reduce spot area by 30%.

This paper presents a multifunctional imaging system that combines dark-field microscopy (DFM) with spectroscopy to image nanostructures and identify their optical properties from absorption spectra. The optical resolving power of this system is determined using a 1-D nanostructure with pitches of 120, 390, and 770 nm with four formats of optical disks. These pattern sizes are verified by atomic force microscopy (AFM) first. The results demonstrate that the resolving power of current system setup can down to 86 nm. The resultant DFM images appear to be slightly larger than the AFM images. A 50-nm-thick gold film was then deposited on top of these nanostructures, and their absorption spectra were obtained to elucidate its optical properties, enhanced by surface plasmon resonance. The immobilization of streptavidin on the surface of gold-coated nanostructure causes the absorption spectra to shift from 600 to 610 nm. A protein nanoarray with a dot size of 50 nm was also imaged by DFM, and can be implemented as a potential biochemical diagnostic system on an optical disk format. Specimens of adenocarcinoma cells and ovary cancer cells were also imaged using this DFM system, and the nuclei structure and some cellular organs can be recognized using a 100 objective oil lens.
