Governments, environmental groups and industry associations are reducing greenhouse gas emissions to insure environmental sustainability. Manufacturing plays an important role in economic development but is a main cause of global warming since production requires energy consumption. The supply chain leadership coalition has requested all members to publish their carbon emission data and to reduce emissions. In addition, the International Standard Organization (ISO) has legislated and published ISO14064 as an industrial guideline to control global greenhouse gas emissions. The British Standards Institution developed PAS2050 as the world's first government regulation to control a product's carbon footprint. Providing carbon labelling on products increases product appeals and sales revenues, but also increases manufacturing costs. This research aims to minimise a product's carbon footprint, while controlling its manufacturing cost during collaborative green product design and production planning. An economic input-output life cycle assessment approach is used to evaluate the carbon emissions of new products. The life cycle assessment identifies problematic carbon emissions within the supply chain. Based on the input and output data, the research applies system dynamics modelling to simulate and identify green product redesigns with cost-effective carbon footprints during manufacturing. The purpose of this research is to derive optimal means to reduce the carbon footprint for green product development and production. Finally, the paper uses the case of an electronic image projector to demonstrate the application of the methodology.

The development of an industrial system is a complex and dynamic process. In developing countries, industrial development is even more complicated because it involves the interactions of domestic firms and multinational corporations (MNCs), the role of the government, and the development of technology. Both MNCs and the government play the role of providing the resources and the environment for the development of industrial systems. This study discusses the viewpoints of ecological systems and system dynamics to summarize the analysis of the development of Taiwan's automobile, semiconductor, and national defense industries. In addition, an evolutionary perspective is used to examine the development of the information technology and semiconductor industries. The results show that different systems viewpoint provides different insights into industrial development. Therefore, more diverse systems approaches are needed to further our understanding of the development of industrial systems.

This study applies the system dynamics (SD) methodology to explore factors affecting the industrial cluster effect, which is crucial in determining national and industrial competitive advantage. A literature review finds few studies that utilize SD to investigate factors affecting the industrial cluster effect. In a global business environment, competition is not just between individual companies and supply chains, but also among companies in regional clusters. The concept of SD, devised by Jay W. Forrester et al, helps mankind realize the variation of a complicated system, and perceive how an internal feedback loop within a system impacts whole system's behavior. This study establishes a dynamic model of various factors of industrial cluster effect through the causal loop diagram also known as the cause-and-effect chain. This study considers four important interactive dimensions of industrial competitiveness: manpower, technology, money, and market flows. This study also constructs a comprehensive causal loop diagram of the industrial cluster effect. All factors in the cause-and-effect chains influence positively the industrial cluster effect. The SD approach is adopted to analyze the complicated relationship of factors affecting industrial cluster effect. The SD approach is more effective than other methodologies. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The major two concerns for planning a successful water strategy in Taiwan are the modification of water shortages and a total financial cost, construction, and operating costs. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to formulate an appropriate strategy to seek a balance between mitigating water shortages and total financial cost. Accordingly, we propose a process for combining a system dynamics approach and impact analysis to evaluate water strategy systematically and quantitatively. Water shortages and total financial cost are referred to, as governments are responsible for the management of regional water resources. System dynamics is one approach that can help decision makers build a simulation model of a complex water supply system. The value of a water shortage and total cost to all possible planning strategies for future water demand can be obtained from system dynamics model simulation. The content of proposed impact analysis is used to design indexes that are able to indicate (1) the severity of a water shortage and (2) total financial cost. Examining the performance of proposed indexes, we can understand the interactive impact between these two objectives in every strategy and then select appropriate strategies. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed methodology is verified by solving a problem of water shortage and total financial cost in central Taiwan.
