Item type:Item, Reactive compatibilization of polymer blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and polyamide-6,6 (PA66) .1. Rheological and thermal properties(1997-04-01) ;Huang, CC ;Chang, FC ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryEpoxy resin (EEW = 2060) has been demonstrated to be an efficient reactive compatibilizer for the incompatible polymer blends of polyamide-6,6 (PA66) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PET). Processability improvement has been achieved by reducing die swell and melt fracture during blending extrusion. Reactions involved in this three-component system are very complex but only the coupling reactions between epoxy and PBT and PA66 endgroups are considered essential. This epoxy resin is more compatible with PET than with PA66 but the reactivity of the former is slower than that of the latter. Additionally, PET has a lower melting temperature than that of PA66; this epoxy resin therefore has the first chance to react with PBT, then with PA66, at the interface. Certain mixed copolymers, epoxy-co-PBT-co-PA66, are expected to be formed and to anchor at the interface. These mixed copolymers are believed to be the major contributor in improving the compatibility of incompatible PA66/PBT blends. The torque measurements give indirect evidence that the reaction between PA and PET with epoxy has an opportunity to produce an in situ formed copolymer, which can be as an effective compatibilizer to reduce and suppress the size of the disperse phase, and to greatly enhance mechanical properties of PA/PBT blends. The mechanical property improvement is more pronounced in the PA-rich blends than that in the PET-rich blends. The fracture behavior of the blend with less than 0.3 phr compatibilizer is governed by a particle pullout mechanism, whereas shear yielding is dominant in the fracture behavior of the blend with more than 0.3 phr compatibilizer. As the melt and crystallization temperatures of the base polymers are so close, either PA or PET can be regarded as a mutual nucleating agent to enhance the crystallization on the other component. The presence of compatibilizer and in situ formed copolymer in the compatibilized blends tends to interfere with the crystallization of the base polymers in various blends. Morphological and mechanical properties(1997-08-01) ;Huang, CC ;Chang, FC ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryBisphenol-A type solid epoxy resin has been demonstrated as a low cost and efficient compatibilizer for the immiscible and incompatible blends of polyamide 6,6 (PA66) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT). The phase domains of the compatibilized blends have been reduced, while their mechanical properties substantially improved. A fraction of this difunctional epoxy resin is able to form in situ the PBT-co-Epoxy-co-PA66 mixed copolymer at the interface. This mixed copolymer with both segments structurally identical to both base polymers will anchor along the interface, and functions as an effective compatibilizer for the PA66/PBT blends. The mechanism of the mixed copolymer formation has been discussed in detail. The mechanical property improvement of the PA66-rich blends is more significant than of the PBT-rich blends after compatibilization. The nature of the reactive compatibilization tends to leave a greater fraction of the compatibilizer in the PBT phase than in the PA66 phase. Therefore, the intrinsic properties of the PBT matrix have been reduced after compatibilization. This is why the improvement in properties of the PBT-rich blends are not as great as expected. Different types of core-shell elastomers have also been employed to toughen the PA66/PBT blends. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
