Item type:Item, Star polymers via atom transfer radical polymerization from adamantane-based cores(2004-03-29) ;Huang, CF ;Lee, HF ;Kuo, SW ;Xu, HYChang, FCA series of novel multifunctional initiators derived from adamantane-based derivatives have been used in the syntheses of various styrenic and (meth)acrylic star polymers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Conditions were identified in each system to produce star polymers with nearly monomodal molecular distributions. These synthesized star polymers have glass transition temperatures similar to those known for high-molecular-weight linear polymers. We obtained a series of adamantane-contained star polymers covering a wide range of molecular weights by adjusting the monomer-to-initiator ratio and the solvent polarity. Because of reaction heterogeneity and inevitable termination processes, the occurrence of star-star coupling led to a lower than predicted molecular weight polydispersity. When hydrolyzed from their cores by NaOH, the values of Mw of the arms of the PMMA star polymer did not change with reaction time, at least for the first 48 h of the reaction, which implies that no significant PMMA hydrolysis occurs within this interval of time. We demonstrate that a single one-step approach based on dual simultaneous polymerizations is a viable technique for the synthesis of a wide range of block copolymers by combining two dissimilar polymerization systems and using a dual-functional initiator. The main advantage of this methodology is that a simple, one-step, and simultaneous polymerization occurs in the bulk, which makes this process very attractive from both industrial and academic points of view. We plan to study the reaction kinetics and evaluate how well the ring opening catalyst [in this case, Sn(oct)(2)] works under reverse ATRP conditions. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. The thermal behavior and specific interaction of PHEMA-b-PVP diblock copolymers and their corresponding PHEMA/PVP blends were characterized. The result shows that glass transition temperatures of diblock copolymers analysed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are higher than those of the blends. Infrared and solid-state NMR spectroscopic analyses show that hydrogen-bonding interaction of hydroxyl-carbonyl groups of diblock copolymers was also greater than that of the blends. Measurement of the proton spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame, (T-1P(H)), reveals that all diblock copolymers and blends possess one composition-dependent T H, indicating that both diblock copolymers and blends are homogeneous, which is consistent with the DSC analysis. This PCL-b-PVPh diblock copolymer shows a single glass transition temperature over the entire composition range, indicating that this copolymer is able to form a miscible amorphous phase due to the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl of PVPh and the carbonyl of PCL. In addition, DSC analyses also indicated that the PCL-b-PVPh diblock copolymers have higher glass transition temperatures than their corresponding PCL/PVPh blends. FT-IR was used to study the hydrogen-bonding interaction between the PVPh hydroxyl group and the PCL carbonyl group at various compositions.Item type:Item, Synthesis and characterization of liquid crystalline side-chain block copolymers containing luminescent 4,4'-bis(biphenyl)fluorene pendants(2007-10-15) ;Lee, Kuan-Wei ;Lin, Hong-Cheu ;材料科學與工程學系Department of Materials Science and EngineeringA series of new liquid crystalline homopolymers, copolymers, and block copolymers were polymerized from styrene-macroinitiator (SMi) and methacrylates with pendent 4,4'-bis(biphenyl)fluorene (M1) and biphenyl-4-ylfluorene (M2) groups through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The number-average molecular weights (Mn) of polymers P1-P4 were 10,007, 14,852, 6,275, and 10,463 g mol-1 with polydispersity indices values of 1.21, 1.15, 1.31, and 1.22, respectively. All polymers exhibit the nematic phase. The thermal, mesogenic, and photoluminescent properties of all polymers were investigated. We synthesized poly[1-(4-vinylbenzyl)thymine] (PVBT) and 9-bexadecyladenine (A-C16) through an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and alkylation, respectively. Biocomplementary PVBT/A-C16 hierarchical supramolecular complexes formed in dilute DMSO solution through nucleobase recognition, that is, hydrogen bonding interactions between the thymine (T) groups of PVBT and the adenine (A) group of A-C16; evidence for this molecular recognition was also gained from dynamic light scattering studies. H-1 NMR titration studies in CDCl3 showed that T-A complexes formed rapidly on the NMR time scale with high association constants (up to 534 M-1). Moreover, FTIR spectroscopic, differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and small-angle X-ray scattering analyses provided further details into the nature of the self-assembly of these systems. In the bulk state, these complexes self-assemble into well-ordered lamellar structures; the changing d-spacing distance (ranging from 4.98 to 2.32 nm) at different A-C16 loadings reveals that the molecular structures of the PVBT/A-C16 complexes are readily tailored.
