The two issues of art image creation and data hiding are integrated into one and solved by a single approach in this study. An automatic method for generating a new type of computer art, called stained glass image, which imitates the stained-glass window picture, is proposed. The method is based on the use of a tree structure for region growing to construct the art image. Also proposed is a data hiding method which utilizes a general feature of the tree structure, namely, number of tree nodes, to encode the data to be embedded. The method can be modified for uses in three information protection applications, namely, covert communication, watermarking, and image authentication. Besides the artistic stego-image content which may distract the hacker's attention to the hidden data, data security is also considered by randomizing both the input data and the seed locations for region growing, yielding a stego-image which is robust against the hacker's attacks. Good experimental results proving the feasibility of the proposed methods are also included.

A novel and easy method to embed any form of secret messages into a cover image with controlled distortion is proposed. Any lossy image compressor may be applied first to a cover image to produce a lossily-processed result as the basis for embedding data in the cover image. The stego-image is produced by embedding data in each pixel of a cover image by changing its gray value without excessing the range of the gray value difference of the corresponding pixels of the cover image and its lossily-processed one. The quantity of distortion that is caused by embedding data is never in excess of that is caused by the lossy compressor. A multiple-based number system is proposed to convert the information in the secret bit stream into values to be embedded in the choosing pixels of the cover image. Pseudo-random mechanisms may be used to achieve cryptography. It is found from experiments that the values of the peaks of the signal-to-noise ratio of the stego-images are larger than those yielded by the chosen compressor, which means that the distortion in the embedding result is more imperceptible than that in the compressed one.

Wu and Tsai proposed PVD (pixel-value differencing) data hiding method in 2003. PVD partitions a cover image into non-overlapping blocks of two consecutive pixels and calculated the difference value from the two pixels in each block. This method provides an easy way to produce a more imperceptible result. Afterwards, some scholars have proposed PVD-related improvements in image quality and embedding capacity. This paper classifies and discusses the recent PVD-based methods. We will compare each PVD related method in terms of the embedding capacity and PSNR.

A new steganographic method via PNG images based on the information sharing technique is proposed. The coefficients of the polynomial functions of the Shamir's (k, n)-threshold secret sharing method are utilized as carriers of a given secret data string to be hidden to generate shares. The shares then are embedded into the alpha-channel plane of a cover PNG image. The resulting stego-image with perceptible white noise is further removed by mapping computed share values into suitable ranges. Appropriate measures for enhancing the security of the proposed method are also described. Experimental results show the effect of the proposed method.

In this paper, we present a high-quality image authentication scheme based on absolute moment block truncation coding. In the proposed scheme, we use the parity of the bitmap (BM) to generate the authentication code for each compressed image block. Data hiding is used to authenticate whether the content has been altered or not. For image authentication, we embed the authentication code to quantization levels of each image block compressed by absolute moment block truncation coding (AMBTC) which will be altered when the host image is manipulated. The embedding position is generated by a pseudo-random number generator for security concerned. Besides, to improve the detection ability we use a hierarchical structure to ensure the accuracy of tamper localization. A watermarked image can be precisely inspected whether it has been tampered intentionally or incautiously by checking the extracted watermark. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed scheme achieved high-quality embedded images and good detection accuracy, with stable performance and high expansibility. Performance comparisons with other block-based data hiding schemes are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme.

A new 2D code called Secure 2D code is designed in this paper, both encoder and decoder are also proposed. Secure 2D code can store any kind of data and provides high security. With regard to security, the input data is divided into two parts: general and secret. The general data is transformed into a 2D code pattern, then secret data is hidden in the 2D code pattern. To raise the reading speed and allow various reading environments, some features are added around the 2D code pattern boundary. As to the reliability, RS code is adopted to treat damaged patterns.

This letter presents a novel steganography scheme capable of concealing a piece of critical information in a host message which is a binary image (e.g., a facsimile). A binary matrix and a weight matrix are used as secret keys to protect the hidden information. Given a host image of size m x n, the proposed scheme can conceal as many as [log(2) (mn + 1)] bits of data in the image by changing, at most, two bits in the host image. This scheme can provide a higher security, embed more information, and maintain a higher quality of the host image than available schemes.

A new and efficient steganographic method for embedding secret messages into a gray-valued cover image is proposed. In the process of embedding a secret message, a cover image is partitioned into non-overlapping blocks of two consecutive pixels. A difference value is calculated from the values of the two pixels in each block. All possible difference values are classified into a number of ranges. The selection of the range intervals is based on the characteristics of human vision's sensitivity to gray value variations from smoothness to contrast. The difference value then is replaced by a new value to embed the value of a sub-stream of the secret message. The number of bits which can be embedded in a pixel pair is decided by the width of the range that the difference value belongs to. The method is designed in such a way that the modification is never out of the range interval. This method provides an easy way to produce a more imperceptible result than those yielded by simple least-significant-bit replacement methods. The embedded secret message can be extracted from the resulting stego-image without referencing the original cover image. Moreover, a pseudo-random mechanism may be used to achieve secrecy protection. Experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed method. Dual statistics attacks were also conducted to collect related data to show the security of the method. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
