Barium thio-oxocobaltate(II), Ba[CoS2/2O2/2], was synthesized by the reaction of equimolar amounts of BaO, Co, and S in closed silica ampoules. The title compound (Cmcm, a=3.98808(3), b=12.75518(9), c=6.10697(4)angstrom) is isostructural to Ba[ZnSO]. The use of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed that cobalt is in the oxidation state +2 and tetrahedrally coordinated. Its coordination consists of two sulfur and two oxygen atoms in an ordered fashion. High-temperature magnetic susceptibility data indicate strong low-dimensional spin-spin interactions, which are suggested to be closely related to the layer-type crystal structure and perhaps the ordered distribution of sulfur and oxygen. Antiferromagnetic ordering below T-N=222K is observed as an anomaly in the specific heat, coinciding with a significant lowering of the magnetic susceptibility. Density functional theory calculations within a generalized-gradient approximation (GGA)+U approach identify an antiferromagnetic ground state within the square-like two-dimensional layers of Co, and antiferromagnetic correlations for nearest and next nearest neighbors along bonds mediated by oxygen or sulfur. However, this magnetic state is subject to frustration by relatively strong interlayer couplings.

Low-lying excited electronic states of an important class of molecules known as pushpull chromophores are central to understanding their potential nonlinear optical properties. Here we report that a combination of high-sensitivity nanosecond time-resolved dispersive IR spectroscopy and DFT calculations on p-nitroaniline (PNA), a prototypical pushpull molecule, reveals that PNA in the lowest excited triplet state has a partial quinoid structure. In this structure, the quinoid configuration is restricted to a part of the phenyl ring adjacent to the NO2 group. The partial quinoid structure of PNA cannot be explained by a commonly used hybrid of a neutral form and a zwitterionic charge-transfer form. Our findings not only cast doubt on the general applicability of the classical way of looking at excited states, based exclusively on characteristic resonance structures, but also provide deeper insights into excited-state structure of highly polarizable molecular systems.

Reaction mechanisms for the interactions between CeO2(111) and (110) surfaces are investigated using periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both standard DFT and DFT+U calculations to examine the effect of the localization of Ce4f states on the redox chemistry of H-2-CeO2 interactions are described. For mechanistic studies, molecular and dissociative local minima are initially located by placing an H-2 molecule at various active sites of the CeO2 surfaces. The binding energies of physisorbed species optimized using the DFT and DFT+U methods are very weak. The dissociative adsorption reactions producing hydroxylated surfaces are all exothermic; exothermicities at the DFT level range from 4.1 kcalmol(-1) for the (111) to 26.5 kcalmol(-1) for the (110) surface, while those at the DFT+U level are between 65.0 kcalmol(-1) for the (111) and 81.8kcalmol(-1) for the (110) surface. Predicted vibrational frequencies of adsorbed OH and H2O species on the surfaces are in line with available experimental and theoretical results. Potential energy profiles are constructed by connecting molecularly adsorbed and dissociatively adsorbed intermediates on each CeO2 surface with tight transition states using the nudged elastic band (NEB) method. It is found that the U correction method plays a significant role in energetics, especially for the intermediates of the exit channels and products that are partially reduced. The surface reduction reaction on CeO2(110) is energetically much more favorable. Accordingly, oxygen vacancies are more easily formed on the (110) surface than on the (111) surface.

Rational design and synthesis of Ir(III) complexes (1-3) bearing two cyclometalated ligands (C boolean AND N) and one 2-(diphenylphosphino)phenolate chelate (P boolean AND O) as well as the corresponding Ir(III) derivatives (4-6) with only one (C boolean AND N) ligand and two P boolean AND O chelates are reported, where (C boolean AND NH) = phenylpyridine (ppyH), 1-phenylisoquinoline (piqH), and 4-phenylquinazoline (nazoH). Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of 3 reveal a distorted octahedral coordination geometry. in which two nazo ligands adopt an eclipsed Configuration, with the third P boolean AND O ligand located trans to the phenyl group of both nazo ligands, confirming the general skeletal pattern for 1-3. In sharp contrast, complex 4 reveals a trans-disposition for the PPh(2) groups, along with the phenolate groups residing opposite the unique cyclometalated ppy ligand, which is the representative structure for 4-6. These Ir(III) complexes exhibit green-to-red photoluminescence with moderate to high quantum efficiencies in the degassed fluid state and bright emission in the solid state. For 1-6, the resolved emission spectroscopy and relaxation dynamics are well rationalized by the Computational approach. OLEDs fabricated using 12 wt.% of 3 doped in CBP and with BCP as hole blocking material, give bright electroluminescence with lambda(max) = 628 nm and CIE(xy) coordinates (0.65, 0.34). The turn-on voltage is 3.2 V, while the current efficiency and the power efficiency reach 11.2cd A(-1) and 4.5 lm W(-1) at 20 mA cm(-2). The maximum efficiency reaches 14.7 cd A(-1) and 6.8 lm W(-1) upon switching to TPBI as hole blocking material. For evaluating device lifespan, the tested device incorporating CuPc as a passivation layer, 3 doped in CTP as an emitting layer, and BAlq as hole blocking material, shows a remarkably long lifetime up to 36 000 h at an initial luminance of 500 cd m(-2).
