This paper proposes a varactor-tuned quadruplexer that allows simultaneous control of the center frequency and bandwidth of each channel and independent control on different channels. To achieve compactness, each channel consists of only a dual-mode resonator where the even- and odd -mode resonances contribute to a two -pole response. The fabricated prototype shows that, for the input return loss greater than 10 dB, the available tuning ranges of the channel frequency and the 3 -dB bandwidth are 1.1-1.4 GHz and 100-140 MHz, 1.55-1.9 GHz and 120-150 NIIIz, 2.05-2.4 GlIz and 190-240 MHz, and 2.63-3.1 GlIz and 240270 NHIz, respectively, for channels 1, 2, 3, and 4. The channel insertion loss is less than 5 dB and isolation is greater than 25 dB for all tuning states. The quadruplexer has a footprint of 0.45 lambda(g) x 0.25 lambda(g), where lambda(g) is the guided wavelength at 1.1 GHz.

A dual-mode receiver architecture with tens-MHz channel bandwidth at microwave mode and GHz channel bandwidth at millimeter-wave mode is demonstrated in this work with a tunable active filter for RF channel selection at microwave mode using 0.18 mu m SiGe BiCMOS technology. A dual conversion is employed to accommodate the wide-channel-bandwidth 60-GHz mode at the first conversion stage and the high-level-modulation 5-GHz mode is merged to the second conversion stage through sharing the 5-GHz switchable Gilbert IQ mixers with the 60-GHz mode. A tunable RF active filter is inserted between the 5-GHz LNA and the second stage mixer to serve as RF channel selection at the 5-GHz mode with the ability of relaxing the stringent linearity requirement imposed by high-level-modulation scheme. 10 dB gain with a 2-GHz channel bandwidth at the 60-GHz mode and 23 dB gain with a 20 MHz channel bandwidth within the 600 MHz tuning range at 5-GHz mode are demonstrated with a low-flicker-noise corner of less than 60 KHz at the 5-GHz mode because of the use of SiGe HBT as the IQ Gilbert mixer cores at the second conversion stage.

Dual-mode dual-band bandpass filters are developed based on a single ring resonator. The ring is composed of two half-wave stepped-impedance resonators with short-circuited ends, which are connected to ground vias by short high-impedance sections, providing inductive coupling between the resonating modes and hence bandwidth control. Experimental filters are fabricated and measured for validation. Skew-symmetric feed structure is employed in the first circuit for enhancing the frequency selectivity around the second band. Source-load coupling is incorporated with the second design to create transmission zeros on both sides of the two passbands, greatly improving the performance in transition bands. The measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

Dual-mode ring resonator filter is designed to have a relatively wide passband with a miniaturized circuit area. The miniaturization is achieved by folding the ring trace to a spiral configuration. The two degenerate modes are split up by an asymmetric inductive perturbation. As a result, the circuit area is only 29% of that of a conventional ring. The strong I/O coupling required by the wide passband property is implemented by adding an impedance transformer for matching the external quality factor (Q(ext)) with the circuit bandwidth. Measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

Human body communication (HBC), a technique featuring low conduction loss and low interference by taking the advantages of the nature of body composition, has emerged as one of the most promising techniques toward next-generation wireless body area network (WBAN). The regulation of WBAN, IEEE 802.15.6, concerning the standard of physical layer has also been established in 2012. The intensity of electric field around body is affected by the transmission distance, quality of electrode-skin contact, and so on which results in wide variance in path loss. In addition, according to the measurement results, the equivalent capacitance of electrode-skin interface increases path loss significantly when noncontact transmission happens. To solve the problems, a low-power receiver with dual-mode operation is proposed in this paper. The receiver has been implemented in a standard 0.18-mu m CMOS process measurement shows the receiver is fully functional with power consumption < 1.75 mW under 1.2 V supply voltage and compatible with IEEE 802.15.6 HBC layer. The chip size is 1.05 mm(2). Maximum voltage conversion gain can be 85.5 dB. Experimental sensitivity is up to -90 dBm under an information data rate of 164 kb/s. It has been demonstrated that the receiver provides successful text file transmission through human body with the fabricated sensing electrodes.

All-planar dual-mode inductive asymmetric filters utilizing new planar microstrip to dielectric-loaded rectangular waveguide transitions at Ka-band were presented and built in this letter. The conventional, three-dimensional metallic rectangular waveguide dual-mode filters can be implemented into mature PCB technology with a much easier and lower-cost fabrication process on the basis of the all-planar feature of the transition. This work demonstrates two Ka-band filter examples with center frequency at 31 GHz and bandwidth at 1 GHz and 2 GHz. The measured minimum insertion loss of each case was, respectively, 2.68 and 1.12 dB, with greater than 10 dB return loss in the passband. Moreover, the measured side-band attenuation (near passband) is larger than 30 dB due to the transmission zeros at each side of the passband.

New dual-mode dual-band bandpass filters with quasi-elliptic function responses are devised based on a single stepped-impedance resonator. The center of the resonator is grounded through a short high-impedance section which is equivalent to an inductor for providing coupling between the resonant modes. In addition, in order to increase the degree of freedom for the dual-band design, an interdigital capacitor is introduced so that both center frequencies and bandwidths of the two passbands can be controlled. Moreover, with the aid of source-load coupling, two extra transmission zeros can be created close to the passband edges and hence greatly improve the filter selectivity between the two passbands. Two filters are fabricated and measured to validate the proposed idea. The measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

A dual-mode ring resonator filter is devised to have a miniaturized size and its performance investigated. By placing an inductive perturbation at an asymmetric position, with respect to the input and output ports, two transmission zeros are created on the both sides of the passband. The miniaturization is achieved by folding the microstrip ring trace into a spiral configuration, incorporating with metallic via-holes and coplanar waveguide sections as the interconnection. The circuit size is only 20.5% of that of a conventional ring resonator. Measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

Dual-mode ring resonator filters are implemented with asymmetric inductive perturbation for creating transmission zeros on both sides of the passband. In analysis, dependence of the resonance modes and the zeros on positions and sizes of both the inductive and capacitive perturbations is investigated. Under certain conditions, the even- and odd-mode frequencies for a capacitively perturbed ring are the same as the odd and even ones, respectively, for a ring with inductive perturbation. Theoretical background is clearly explained how the two transmission zeros are split up from the center frequency. Two dual-mode ring resonator filters are fabricated and measured for demonstration. To obtain a miniaturized circuit area, the 1-lambda ring trace is folded into a double-ring or spiral configuration. The inductive perturbation is chosen as the crossover and implemented by a short high-impedance coplanar waveguide interconnection in the ground plane of the microstrip. Measurement results show good agreement with the simulation responses.

A dual-mode, triple-band RF front-end receiver for GSM900, DCS800 and WCDMA is presented in this paper. This chip uses low-IF and zero-IF receiver architectures for GSM and WCDMA respectively to fulfill the entirely different system requirements of the two standards. It consists of three parallel LNAs and down-conversion mixers with on-chip LO I/Q generations. The receiver front-end is implemented in a standard 0.25 mu m CMOS process and consumes about 30-mA from a 2.7-V power supply for all modes. The measured double-side band noise figure and voltage gain are 3 dB, 36 dB for the GSM900, 5.9 dB, 31 d13 for the DCS 1800, and 4.3 dB, 29.6 dB for the WCDMA, respectively.
