Item type:Item, Experimental investigation of a fiber Bragg grating integrated optical limiting amplifier with high dynamic range(1998-07-01) ;Liaw, SK ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsBy inserting a bidirectional erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in between an optical circulator and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG), we realize an FBG-integrated optical limiting amplifier (OLA) with high dynamic range. The dual-pass OLA has a wide dynamic range of over 40 dB and a saturation signal output power of about 13.0 dBm. The performance of dual-pass OLA has no obvious degradation due to back reflection of the amplified signal. A negligible power penalty of about 0.3 dB is observed when compared with other conventional configurations. The FBG-integrated OLA configuration has potential application in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems where high saturated power is needed for multichannel transmission. They rely on the use of central wavelength misalignment and bending loss methods, respectively. They cart effectively cover the whole useful 1.55-mu m band. Both modules can provide gain-flattening characteristics over a large input dynamic range. The FBGs-integrated OLA configuration has potential application in wavelength division multiplexing lightwave communication systems.Item type:Item, Proposed power-equalized EDFA modules using fiber Bragg gratings with various reflectivities(1999) ;Liaw, SK ;Ho, KP ;Hsu, KY ;Chi, S光電工程學系We proposed and experimentally demonstrated two power equalized erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) modules using fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with various reflectivities for individual channels. The transmission type power-equalized EDFA module is low-cost for its simple design, while the reflection type power-equalized EDFA module can suppress most of the amplified spontaneous emission noise. Both consist of a bidirectional EDFA, a set of FBG chains with suitable reflectivities, and an optical isolator / optical circulator They can find potential applications in wavelength division multiplexing lightwave transmission systems.Item type:Item, Dispersion compensation and gain flattened for a wavelength division multiplexing system by using chirped fiber gratings in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier(1999-04-15) ;Dung, JC ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA new technique, using chirped fiber gratings (CFGs) with different dispersions and center frequencies to reflect the different channel pulses at different positions, is proposed to compensate for the accumulated dispersions and flatten the signal gain of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system. A numerical example of the gain flattened and dispersion compensation for four channel multiplexed signals in the 1544-1556 nm wavelength region is shown. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. The power-equalized EDFA module can find wide applications in WDM lightwave transmission systems.Item type:Item, Optimum configuration and design of 1480-nm pumped L-band gain-flattened EDFA using conventional erbium-doped fiber(2000-09-01) ;Liang, TC ;Chen, YK ;Su, JH ;Tzeng, WHHu, CWe theoretically investigate optimum configurations of 1480-pumped L-band (1570-1610 nm) gain-flattened erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), using conventional erbium-doped fiber, for multi-wavelength wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. The design criterion of L-band EDFA is to achieve the highest channel output power while keeping the differential channel output power to be less than or equal to 0.7 dB among 32 digital baseband channels with low channel noise figure of less than or equal to 5.5 dB. A total of nine L-band EDFA configurations are examined and compared. These configurations considered include the dual-forward, dual-backward, and different bi-directional pumping schemes, each with and without the midway optical isolator. Among all configurations, we find that the pump-passed case in forward-and-backward pumping scheme is the best amplifier configuration to offer the highest channel output power with good channel gain uniformity and moderate low noise figure. In addition, the tolerance of the ratio of first-staged EDF length to the total EDF length, and the effects of optical isolation of midway isolator, and pump power degradation on the characteristics of the best configuration are also examined. This investigation provides the EDFA configuration selection for multi-wavelength WDM L-band lightwave systems. The lasing light passing through the second stage is intentionally blocked at the output end by a C/L-band wavelength division multiplexer owning the huge insertion loss, and thus, the copropagating ring-laser light is formed by the first stage. This design can simultaneously clamp the gains of 1547 and 1584 nm probes near 14 dB and shows the same dynamic range of input power up to -4 dBm for conventional band and long-wavelength band. Furthermore, the transient responses of 1551 and 1596 nm surviving channels exhibit small power excursions (<0.54 dB) as the total saturating tone with -2 dBm is modulated on and off at 270 Hz. Based on the amplified feedback injection loop, the 3-dB linewidth of 3.4 MHz for the EDFA-FPLD link is determined by using self-heterodyne interferometric spectral analysis. The EDFA-FPLD link exhibits a nearly mode-beating noise-free performance as compared to the EDFL-FPLD link. This is due to the release of the resonant cavity configuration in the EDFL-FPLD link at a cost of slightly lower side-mode suppression ratio (similar to42 dB). The maximum output power of the EFDA-FPLD link is 20 mW under an FPLD input power of 0.1 mW.Item type:Item, Optical monitoring technique based on scanning the gain profiles of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers for WDM networks(2004-11-16) ;Yeh, CH ;Lee, CC ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsWe have proposed and demonstrated a new optical monitoring technique based on scanning the gain (or loss) profiles of the erbium-doped fiber amplifiers for WDM networks. The maximum measured error of less than or equal to 0.31 dB, the sensitivity of -50 dBm, and the dynamic range of 34 dB have been achieved experimentally for a 4-channel demonstration. As a result, 35.4 and, 38.1 dB peak gains can be achieved at 1532 and 1568 nm, respectively, over the operation range. This proposed amplifier can also be used as a broadband amplified-spontaneous-emission light source.
