In this study, we experimentally demonstrated that a high-sensitivity fiber sensor can be used for the remote sensing of temperature and stress simultaneously. The proposed sensor includes several sensing heads, each of which is composed of a long-period grating (LPG) and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Moreover, the optical characteristics of both the FBG and LPG are different. On the basis of these different optical features and the sensing transfer matrix, temperature and stress can both be remotely measured simultaneously. The temperature sensitivities of the grating-wavelength shift and grating-reflection intensity are about 0.0082 nm/degrees C and 0.044 dBm/degrees C, respectively. The strain sensitivities of the grating wavelength shift and grating-reflection intensity are respectively around 0.0133 nm/g and 0.0089 dBm/g. Therefore, the fiber sensor can provide a simple method with excellent sensitivity for applications of structure-security monitoring and industrial engineering measurements.

By inserting a bidirectional erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in between an optical circulator and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG), we realize an FBG-integrated optical limiting amplifier (OLA) with high dynamic range. The dual-pass OLA has a wide dynamic range of over 40 dB and a saturation signal output power of about 13.0 dBm. The performance of dual-pass OLA has no obvious degradation due to back reflection of the amplified signal. A negligible power penalty of about 0.3 dB is observed when compared with other conventional configurations. The FBG-integrated OLA configuration has potential application in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems where high saturated power is needed for multichannel transmission. Multiwavelength cross-connects (WXC's) will play a key role to provide more reconfiguration flexibility and network survivability in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transport networks. In this paper, we utilize three different fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based P-type, S-type, and N-type building blocks with optical circulators and related control devices for constructing large rearrangeably nonblocking N x,N WXC's, The P-type building block is composed of certain "parallel" FBG-element chains placed between the control devices of two large mechanical optical switches (OSW's), The S-type building block consists of a "series" of FBG elements and the control device of 2 x 2 OSW's, The nonswitched N-type building block includes a "series" of FBG elements with appropriate stepping motor or PZT control devices. All FBG elements, each with central wavelength corresponding to equally or unequally spaced WDM channel wavelengths, with high-reflectivity are required. Large N x N WXC structures, with minimum number of required constitutive elements, based on a three-stage Clos network are then constructed. We investigate their relevant characteristics, compare the required constitutive elements, and estimate the dimension limits for these WXC architectures. Other related issues such as capacity expansion, wavelength channel spacing, and multiwavelength amplification are also addressed.

A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based multi-wavelength ring laser is experimentally investigated in this paper. The lasing wavelengths can be dynamically selected by using a 1 x N optical switch. Micro-bender between FBGs is used as variable attenuator to equalize the output power for each lasing wavelength. By using passive multi-ring cavities (MRC) method, single- or dual-wavelength laser of equal output power is demonstrated for a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 63 dB and a narrow linewidth of 3 kHz. A new scheme of dispersion slope compensator by writing Bragg gratings at different positions in a dispersion compensation fiber is proposed for the wavelength division multiplexing soliton transmission system. This scheme can compensate in-line for the accumulated dispersion of;each channel and suppress the dispersive waves which are caused by the incomplete filtering of the signals of the neighboring channels by using Fabry-Perot or Butterworth filters and the different propagating paths of the signals of the different channels in the dispersion slope compensator.

By integration of a bidirectional erbium-doped fiber amplifier and a three-port optical circulator with several fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), two gain-flattened optical limiting amplifier (OLA) modules are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. They rely on the use of central wavelength misalignment and bending loss methods, respectively. They cart effectively cover the whole useful 1.55-mu m band. Both modules can provide gain-flattening characteristics over a large input dynamic range. The FBGs-integrated OLA configuration has potential application in wavelength division multiplexing lightwave communication systems.

We proposed and experimentally demonstrated two power equalized erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) modules using fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with various reflectivities for individual channels. The transmission type power-equalized EDFA module is low-cost for its simple design, while the reflection type power-equalized EDFA module can suppress most of the amplified spontaneous emission noise. Both consist of a bidirectional EDFA, a set of FBG chains with suitable reflectivities, and an optical isolator / optical circulator They can find potential applications in wavelength division multiplexing lightwave transmission systems.

Using in optical networks; a reconfigurable and low-cost 2 x 2 optical cross-connect device based on fiber Bragg gratings and optical limiting amplifiers is investigated and demonstrated. The input dynamic range is over 20 dB for both crossing and passing channels. Small power penalty of 0.6-1.0 dB is found for a two-channel 2.5 Gb/s over a 100-km system demonstration.

Two reconfigurable wavelength add/drop multiplexer (WADM) and optical cross-connect (OXC) devices based on strain-tunable fiber Bragg gratings (ST-FBGs) are proposed. The feasibility of WADM is verified by measuring the bit-error-rate performance of the dropped (cross-connect) and pass-through (no cross-connect) channels over a 50- and 100-km standard single-mode fiber for a 2.5 Gb/s system. Compared to back-to-back transmission, a negligible power penalty of only 0.2 dB is observed. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
