Item type:Item, Long-distance strain-induced-grating-based fiber sensors with erbium-based amplifiers(2007-06-01) ;Yeh, Chien-Hung ;Lin, Ming-Ching ;Cheng, Bing-Chung ;Chi, Sien光電工程學系We investigate and demonstrate experimentally a two-stage erbium-based amplifier with a larger amplified-spontaneous-emission light source for a long-distance fiber sensor by using strain-induced fiber Bragg gratings in the fiber systems. In a 20-km-long fiber sensor system, the sensor has a maximal approximate to 2.28-nm wavelength shift under a 1500-mu m/m strain. The proposed sensor includes several sensing heads, each of which is composed of a long-period grating (LPG) and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Moreover, the optical characteristics of both the FBG and LPG are different. On the basis of these different optical features and the sensing transfer matrix, temperature and stress can both be remotely measured simultaneously. The temperature sensitivities of the grating-wavelength shift and grating-reflection intensity are about 0.0082 nm/degrees C and 0.044 dBm/degrees C, respectively. The strain sensitivities of the grating wavelength shift and grating-reflection intensity are respectively around 0.0133 nm/g and 0.0089 dBm/g. Therefore, the fiber sensor can provide a simple method with excellent sensitivity for applications of structure-security monitoring and industrial engineering measurements.Item type:Item, Capacity and capability enhancements of FBG sensor system by utilizing intensity and WDM detection technique(2017-03-01) ;Yeh, Chien-Hung ;Zhuang, Yuan-Hong ;Tsai, Ning ;Chow, Chi-Wai光電工程學系In this paper, we demonstrate a multipoint fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensor system by using intensity and wavelength-division-multiplexing (I-WDM) technique to enhance the sensing capacity and capability. In the proposed multipoint sensor system, a three output port optical splitter with different output ratios of 50%, 35% and 15% is proposed to connect each intensity coding FBG sensor for strain and temperature sensing simultaneously. Different output ratios of connected ports can produce different intensity-coding for I-WDM application. Nine FBGs with different Bragg wavelengths are employed for demonstration. The proposed FBG sensor system not only can sense the strain and temperature simultaneously, but also can increase the capacity and capability.Item type:Item, Self-protection multi-ring-architecture fiber sensing system(2008) ;Wang, C. H. ;Yeh, C. H. ;Shih, F. Y. ;Chow, C. W.Hsu, K. C.In this investigation, we propose and experimentally investigate a simply self-restored ring-based fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based sensor system. This proposed multi-ring passive sensing architecture is without any active components in the entire network. In this experiment, the network survivability and capacity for the multi-point sensor systems are also enhanced. Besides, the tunable laser source (TLS) is adopted in central office (CO) for FBG sensing. The survivability of a eight-point FBG sensor is examined and analyzed. Due to the passive sensor network, the cost-effective and intelligent sensing system is entirely centralized by CO. As a result, the experimental results show that the proposed system can assist the reliable FBG sensing network for a large-scale and multi-point architecture.Item type:Item, High-resolution fiber Bragg grating sensor system using linear-cavity fiber laser scheme(2002-09-05) ;Peng, PC ;Tseng, HY ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA high-resolution fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system using a linear-cavity fiber laser scheme is proposed and numerically studied. The proposed sensor system can improve the sensing accuracy by using a discriminating FBG pair in conjunction with a fiber laser scheme. This FBG sensor system can resolve the temperature up to 0.0005degreesC theoretically and can be applied for strain sensing and temperature sensing with high precision. The self-healing function is constructed by using a primary ring architecture incorporated with several ring sub-networks. To enhance the sensing signal when a breakpoint suddenly occurs in the network, we employ a fiber-ring laser-based sensor system. The network survivability of an 11-point FBG sensor is experimentally examined. The proposed fiber grating sensor system can increase the reliability of a sensing network. The network survivability and capacity for a multipoint sensor system ate enhanced by adding switches in a self-healing ring architecture. The fiber laser adopted in this system is a linear-cavity filter Bragg grating (FBG) laser leading to the signal-to-noise ratio. over 52 dB for the sensor network. The network survivability of a ten-point FBG sensor is experimentally examined. The experimental results show that the proposed system can facilitate reliable, sensing network for a large-scale and multipoint smart structure.Item type:Item, A simple fiber-Bragg-grating sensor system based on a linear-cavity fiber laser(2003-04-05) ;Peng, PC ;Tseng, HY ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA simple fiber-Bragg-grating (FBG) sensor system based on a linear-cavity fiber laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The lasing wavelength shift resulting from the temperature variation on this sensing element is discriminated by two FBGs. These two FBGs, acting as wavelength discriminators, are used to increase the real-time measurement range for monitoring the temperature variation. The main trunk of the proposed sensor network is star topology and the sensing branches comprise a series of concatenated ring subnets. The weakness in reliability of the star network is overcome by the ring subnets with a self-healing function based on the reconfigurable optical switches between each subnet. To enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the sensor system, we adopt a linear-cavity FBG laser scheme to construct our proposed hybrid star-ring architecture. Such a fiber-laser scheme results in the SNR over 48 dB for the sensor network. The network survivability of a ten-point FBG sensor is experimentally examined. It is shown that the proposed FBG sensor system can increase the reliability of a sensing network.Item type:Item, Intensity and wavelength-division multiplexing FBG sensor system using a tunable multiport fiber ring laser(2004-01-01) ;Peng, PC ;Lin, JH ;Tseng, HY ;Chi, S光電工程學系We propose an intensity and wavelength-division multiplexing (IWDM) fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system using a tunable multiport fiber ring laser. The different output powers of a multiport fiber laser are used to address the information reflected from the sensing FBGs, even if the Bragg wavelengths of the FBGs connected at different laser output ports are identical. We describe the operation principle and experimentally demonstrate a three-port fiber sensor. For the IWDM technique, our proposed fiber grating sensor system can enhance the sensing capacity, signal-to-noise ratio, and sensing resolution.
