The 3-amino-9-ethyl carbazole (AEC)/Dispersed Orange 3 (DO3)/diglycidyl 1,2 cyclohexanedicarboxylate (DCD) main chain copolymers are synthesized and studied on their photorefractive (PR), photoconductive, and holographic characteristics. They are good hologram recording media because not only the stored hologram exhibits excellent fringe contrast with the resolution at about 20 mu m, but also the image can be stored, erased, and overwritten. The UV/Vis spectra shows that AEC segments may form charge transfer complexes with either DO3 segments or TNF sensitizers. By incorporating the sensitizer or increasing the charge transfer component concentration, the grating growth rate can be speeded up. Applying an electric field on the polymer film containing no sensitizer helps to elevate the grating growth speed, but it shows little influence on the grating growth speed of the films with sensitizers. More nonlinear optical (NLO) segments in the copolymer result in higher diffraction efficiency. The dark decay of the film depends on the dark conductivity. Incorporating sensitizers or more charge transport segments leads to more dark decay because of increasing dark conductivity. The dark decay of the PR properties at elevated temperature can also be evaluated by the thermal stimulated discharge current (TSDC) spectroscopy technique. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

In this paper, we present a catadioptric telecentric objective for a holographic recording system. The lens was made of Zeonex, whose aspherical surfaces were formed by diamond-turning machining. A least-squares method was used to solve a set of linear equations for the spot size of charge-coupled device (CCD). The data were obtained to generate an S curve, which was used in the pupil obscuration method, for the control of the system operated in a linear range of +/- 0.3 mm.

In holographic data storage systems, it is straightforward to increase the storage capacity by mean of reducing the pitches among data symbols. However, this may lead to severe. inter-symbol interference (ISI) and also unacceptable data error rate. To deal with the problem, we first model the channel as a partial response (PR) and use the maximum-likelihood (ML) detection to control the ISI. The Viterbi decoder is employed to implement ML detection.

The photoproducts in phenanthrenequinone (PQ)-dissolved methyl methacrylate (MMA) liquid samples and PQ-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) solid photopolymer samples have been analyzed by various chemical measurements. A mechanism for holographic recording in our PQ/PMMA photopolymer is proposed. By UV-VIS transmission and photoluminescence spectral measurements, we find that under light exposure the molecular structure of PQ is transformed to be less conjugated. The measured results of mass spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectra, NMR spectra, and gel permeation chromatograph of analyses provide some evidence for recognizing the molecular structure of the photoproducts in our PQ/PMMA photopolymers. The results show that under light exposure the PQ and MMA form new molecules, mainly an adduct of one PQ molecule with one MMA molecule. In addition, PQ also reacts as a photoinitiator to form PMMA oligomers in our samples. The structure change of the PQ molecule induces a strong change of the refractive index in the material. It provides a mechanism to record a phase hologram in our PQ/PMMA photopolymer. Holographic recordings in the samples are demonstrated, and the dynamic range of the sample is investigated. In this study, we synthesised poly(3-octylpyrrole-co-squaric acid) (PSQ3), a polysquaraine, through the reaction of 3-octylpyrrole and squaric acid, and then co-doped it with phenanthrenequinone (PQ) into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to improve the holographic data storage characteristics of the photopolymer. The photopolymers co-doped with relatively small amounts of PSQ3 exhibited greatly improved holographic recording characteristics, including superior diffraction efficiency and dynamic range (M#). Among the samples co-doped with PQ and PSQ3, the maximum diffraction efficiency reached 54.8% (cf. 9.0% for PMMA/PQ) without further downgrade and the value of M# reached 1.05 (cf. 0.46 for PMMA/PQ). Therefore, the holographic data storage characteristics of the photopolymer PMMA/PQ were improved through co-doping with PSQ3.

Both the photorefractive (PR) and holographic characteristics of 3-amino-9-ethyl carbazole (AEC)/Dispersed Orange 3 (DO3)/diglycidyl 1,2 cyclohexanedicarboxylate (DCD) main chain copolymer with the carbazole and the azo chromophore incorporated in a transverse way were investigated without external applied electric field. The recorded pattern exhibited good fringe contrast, the resolution of the recorded hologram was about 20 mu m. Problems such as dopant aggregation, fanning, and image distortion was not found in the system.

In this paper, we reveal a new device for use as an optical data storage system. The system is made up of Cassegrain-like structures. The volume (35 x 20 x 20 mm(3)) of the system is the size of a pickup head used in conventional optical storage. It has compatibility with several conventional optical disk technologies. Namely, the system provides a platform for integration with compact disc (CD), digital versatile disc (DVD), Blu-ray disc (BD) and holographic systems. The full width half maximums (FWHMs) of the spot size for a CD have been measured in this system and are 0.98 and 0.95 mu m in the tangential and radial directions, respectively.
