A compact 1 x 8 waveguide splitter using a guided-wave microlens array is presented and analyzed to show low insertion loss and output imbalance of 0.28 and 0.15 dB, respectively. The analysis results show that the proposed equal-power splitter with insensitive wavelength responses and acceptable fabrication tolerances is applicable for compact and wide-bandwidth integrated optical devices. Longitudinally shifting waveguide junctions can achieve high efficiency light coupling from external silica waveguides into photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) without requiring taper PCW structures in the waveguide junctions. Due to the periodic field distribution of PCWs along the propagation direction, maximum and minimum coupling efficiency occur when waveguide junctions are located near the peak and valley of the longitudinal mode profile, and coupling efficiency depends on both the localization of mode fields in PCWs and the group velocities of eigenmodes. Coupling efficiency of 86% between silicon/silica PCWs and external silica waveguides can be achieved without the need for special design in the junction region for the reduced-rod PCW. Due to large Bragg reflection, coupling of the band edge modes at the flat dispersion regions that possess small group velocities is inefficient. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Coherently coupled bending waveguides based on antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW) structures are investigated. The ARROW structure can provide low-loss single-mode propagation with a relatively large core size for efficient connection to single-mode fibers. The flexible structural parameters of rib ARROW waveguides offer the possibility of optimization for various design considerations. For the total bending angles of 27.2 degrees and 91.2 degrees, the simulated system transmission efficiencies are -0.82 and -2.15 dB respectively. The corresponding device sizes are less than 10 mm(2).

The influence of temperature variation on the performance of arrayed-waveguide gratings (AWG) based on antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW) structures is discussed. The ARROW structure can provide low-loss single-mode propagation with a relatively large core size for efficient connection to single-mode fibers. By introducing an overlay with an opposite temperature coefficient to the original waveguide structure, the temperature dependence on AWG performance can be reduced. Design of temperature-insensitive ARROW-based AWG devices is analyzed, and the channel passband shift of the proposed structure can be lowered to 0.002 nm/K.

A novel Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on dual antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides (ARROWs) for sensing is proposed. By adjusting the degree of structural symmetry to control the coupling behavior of the dual ARROW, an interferometric sensor without any bending structure can be realized. Operating principles and simulation characteristics of the device are discussed in detail. The refractive-index detection limit of the order of 10(-5) is achieved.

We developed a microoptical Ronchi interferometer system in which a V-groove, an out-of-plane grating, a beam splitter, and a 45 degrees upward reflector integrated on a single silicon chip were used to measure the wavefront aberration caused by a microlens on the fiber front end. By the use of the microelectromechanical systems configuration, the fringe patterns caused by the different spherical aberration and defocus balances of the 0.34-numerical-aperture microlens can be captured and analyzed accordingly. As demonstrated by the experimental results, the proposed setup is capable of carrying out a simple wavefront variation measurement in the microscopic scale.

Three different configurations of polarization beam splitters based on antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW) structures are proposed. The polarization splittings are attained by utilizing various characteristics of basic ARROW and/or ARROW-B. In comparison with conventional waveguides, ARROW structures utilizing antiresonant reflection as the guiding mechanism can have large core sizes compatible with single-mode fibers and, thus, provide better coupling. Design principles and characteristics of these ARROW polarization beam splitters are discussed in detail, and the simulation results show that all these devices have good polarization discrimination with crosstalk < -20 dB.

In this paper, the analysis and the design of a photonic handgap (PBG) microcavity waveguide filter with flat-top spectral characteristics are theoretically presented. The split filter analysis and the bidirectional eigenmode propagation method are applied to the investigation of this waveguide structure to obtain the design parameters of the filter with nearly unity transmittance and a squared passband. It shows that the radiation loss in the PBG mirrors diminishes the transmittance of the filter, and a mirror with anomalous dispersion region in reflection phase could be used to assemble an optical filter with the flat-top passband. A 1-D PBG monorail waveguide microcavity filter centered at 1554 nm with a maximum transmission of -0.55 dB and full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 13.6 nm is numerically carried out by using 3-D finite-difference time-domain method.

In this letter, we propose the optomechanical design and fabrication of a novel batched-processed polarization beam splitter (PBS) with an adjustable leak ratio for optical recording applications. The micro-PBS was fabricated by a 410-nm low stress silicon nitride Si3N4 membrane integrated with a bimorph actuator. A de drive voltage was applied to allow an adjustable leak ratio (0-0.24) with incident angle from 65 degrees to 75 degrees for operation in the different optical requirements (phase-change and magneto-optical disks) at lambda = 633 nm. The characteristics of the fabricated PBS are in close agreement with the theoretical calculations and confirm its feasibility.
