This article describes an object-oriented implementation of the finite element method and the finite volume method in a unified adaptive system using the programming language C++. The system applies to various types of mathematical model problems. Traditionally, different numerical methods for different types of problems are implemented independently by procedural languages such as C and Fortran. Moreover, adaptive analysis programs are more complicated than nonadaptive programs. Nevertheless, these methods share many common properties such as linear system solvers, data structures, a posteriori error analyses, and refinement processes. Some advantageous features of object-oriented programming are demonstrated through the integration of these properties in the adaptive system. New data types of objects specific to adaptive methods are also introduced. The system is well-structured, extendable, and maintainable due mainly to the nature of encapsulation and inheritance of object-oriented programming.

The object management architecture (OMA) has been recognized as a de facto standard in the development of object services in a distributed computing environment. In a distributed system, the provision for failure-recovery is always a vital design issue. However, the fault-tolerant service has not been extensively considered in the current OMA framework, despite the fact that an increasing number of useful common services and common facilities have been adopted in OMA. In this paper, we propose a fault-tolerance developing environment, called Phoinix, which is compatible to the OMA framework. In Phoinix, object services can be developed with embedded fault-tolerance capability to tolerate both hardware and software failures. The fault-tolerance capability in Phoinix is classified into two levels: restart, and rollback-recovery; when the fault-tolerance capability enhances as the level increases. Currently, Phoinix is ported on Orbix 2.0 and on SunOS 4.2. In this paper, the design and implementation of Phoinix is presented and its performance is evaluated. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Object-oriented programming [9], which treats objects as processes in execution, has shown significant effectiveness in distributed systems. This effectiveness is greatly influenced by how objects are assigned to nodes. In this paper, we present a colored generalized stochastic Petri net (CGSPN) model to analyze the behavior of object invocations when an assignment strategy is applied. The effectiveness of an object assignment is also analyzed by our CGSPN model. Moreover, this analysis provides guidelines to develop an efficient object assignment strategy. [4-8].

The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), is a major industrial standard for distributed object-based applications. Today's large-scale CORBA applications have to deal with object crashes, node failures, networks partitioning and unpredictable communication delays. Existing efforts to enhance the CORBA reliability can be roughly categorized into three approaches: integration approach, interception approach and service approach. Each approach has its own merits and prices. In this paper, we propose a service approach solution called Object Fault-tolerance Service (OFS). Solutions that adopt the service approach usually specify their service in terms of CORBA IDL interfaces. The implementations of such solutions in general do not modify the ORE infrastructure or IDL language mappings, and thus applications developed with those systems appear to be more portable. OFS differs from other service approach solutions in that OFS does not assume underlying support of reliable group communication. Applications with advance registration can rely on OFS for detection of object and node crashes, and for customized recovery. In this paper, we first present the service specification of OFS. We then give the system architecture of an OFS implementation. This OFS implementation is developed on the Solaris 2.5 platform and with IONA's Orbix 2.0. The performance evaluation of the OFS implementation is also presented. The preliminary experiments indicate that OFS overhead is minimal and client objects experience little response delay when a service object is under OFS surveillance. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Inc. Though the Java programming language was designed with extreme care, there are still a few ambiguities and irregularities left in the language. The ambiguities are those issues that are not defined clearly in the Java language specification. The different results produced by different compilers on several example programs justify our observations. The irregularities are issues that often confuse programmers. It is hard for a confused programmer to write robust programs. Furthermore, a few issues of the Java language are left intentionally open to the compiler writers. Their effects on Java programs are discussed. The problems of ambiguity, irregularity, and dependence on implementations frequently trap an incautious Java programmer. Some suggestions and solutions for the problems are provided in this paper. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

There are more and more COSS (Common Object Service Specification) on CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) that is announced by the OMG (Object Management Group), bur no common specification about fault-tolerance exists now. In this paper, we propose a ''warm stand-by'' replication approach. When an object (primary object) is invoked, it will invoke a secondary object, and the primary object will log the messages and checkpoint the state to the secondary object periodically. If the primary object fails, the secondary object can take over by way of client executing a few operations to change secondary object's mode to primary's. Following the style of COSS, we define four interfaces and provide class implementations that can help programmers write programs with fault-tolerant capability. The whole model has been implemented on Orbix, which is a full implementation of CORBA specification.

The efficiency of object-oriented programs has become a point of great interest, One necessary factor for program efficiency is the optimization techniques involved. This paper presents the performance of several variations of a given C++ program and compares them with a version that uses no object-oriented features, Our result indicates that some object-oriented features in C++ are not well optimized in current C++ compilers. We thus discuss some code optimization techniques that can improve the efficiency based on the given C++ program.
