A luminaire with a light-emitting diode (LED) array can provide hotspot illumination in a short range. Therefore, a design of a luminaire with the largest central illuminance (LCI) and a high uniformity is warranted. In this paper, we present a study of illuminance variation with respect to the distance of an illumination target of a luminaire with LED array. The emission property of the luminous intensity is characterized by the cosine power law or the divergent angle of full width at half maximum (FWHM). A real LED module is designed to create the simulation for different luminaire types. The occurrence of the LCI and the far-field region are observed. Our results demonstrate that the LCI distance remains shorter than the starting distance of the far field (SDFF). To simplify the simulation, we propose the replacement of the real LED module with a point or flat-extended source. Such light sources must be equipped with the specific cosine power factor corresponding to the divergent angle of the FWHM of the LED module. These light sources are acceptable for describing illumination characteristics, including the SDFF. Our results may facilitate the design of LED-array luminaires operated at short working distances, such as reading lighting or illumination in microscopes.

An optimization process combining of global optimization algorithm and further optimization treatment is proposed and demonstrated with application to the objective lenses of multiple-wavelength configurations. Based on the optimal variable set of aspheric coefficients obtained by the proposed global optimization strategy, singlet objective lens for different operational configurations, i.e., for CD and DVD, and for DVD and HDDVD, can be deduced.

A design of aspheric lens is proposed to collimate a light source of Lambertian angular distribution and generate homogenous irradiance. Two numerical solutions were calculated. One used even orders of general aspheres to describe the aspheric surfaces and the performance was evaluated by commercial optical software package Tracepro. Both of high numerical aperture (NA) of 0.79 and good RMS uniformity within 95% of designed area in the second surface of lens could be obtained. The reverse of this lens would be used in focusing and the simulated point spread function (PSF) is almost diffraction-limited. The other fitted both of aspheric surface with radial spline surface and the performance was evaluated by commercial optical software package OSLO. With the radial spline surface representation, the aspheric lens has a higher NA of 0.9; meanwhile, the uniformity was still good enough and PSF is also near diffraction-limited.

A dual-f/# optical system is evaluated and considered for illumination. Etendue theory has been employed to increase the optical throughput and collection efficiency. A classical Cooke triplet with a dual f/# is included for illustration. As a demonstration of the potential application to projection displays, an elliptically shaped illumination-pupil system is proposed to increase the optical collection efficiency in the DMD(TM) (Digital Micromirror Device(TM))-based projection system. With a dual-f/# configuration, this design can eliminate the f/2.4 constraint that was caused by the light-steering action of the narrow +/- 12 degrees tilt angles on the DMD(TM). The percentage of increase in the optical collection efficiency is 6.2% in the dual f/2.0 x f/2.4 optical projection system by using ray-tracing simulation. This method enables a lower than f/2.4 optical design with a high brightness and an adequate contrast ratio in the DMD(TM)-based projectors.

A global optimization process is developed for designing an objective lens for multiple-configuration applications. As a demonstration, it is shown that diffraction-limit performance can be achieved for a pickup head used for both compact disks (wavelength 780 nm) and digital versatile disks (wavelength range 635 to 650 nm) with different working distances and focal lengths, at a numerical aperture of 0.6.
