Featured Application The physical properties of heat-treated soil are clarified in this study before the soil is reused as a construction material in civil engineering. Abstract The heat treatment of oil-contaminated sites is widely carried out for the purposes of remediation. However, heat treatment changes the physical and chemical properties of soil. Before the soil can be reused as a construction material in civil engineering, such as in backfill or road base materials, the changes to its physical properties must be understood. Therefore, this study investigates the changes in the physical and chemical properties of oil-contaminated soil after heat treatment. In this investigation, experimental samples of soil with added oil from a refinery plant are used to investigate the removal rate of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) by thermal desorption and incineration. The physical properties of the soil, including water permeability and mechanical properties, are compared before and after heat treatment. The results of this study are as follows. (1) Particle size analysis reveals that heat treatment makes soil particles finer. (2) In the burning reduction test, heat treatment at 900 degrees C removes more than 90% of THP. (3) In the direct shear test, the friction angle (phi) increases with the removal rate. (4) In the hydraulic test, as the removal rate increases, the permeability coefficient increases after heat treatment.

Multilayer films with multiple properties have been widely applied in the packaging industry. In order to know the two most important properties, ie permeability and tensile property, of the multilayer films, we examined model predictions and the properties of the individual component layers to provide an efficient method to design desired multilayer structures. The series model was employed for predicting permeability; there is good agreement between experimental data and this model for predicting both gas and water vapor permeabilities of three-layer films with various thickness fractions of polyamide 6 (PA-6). We can also predict the parameters of the constitutive equation, which described the plastic deformation of the three-layer films, from those of the individual component layers, with particularly high accuracy by using the additive rule. However, there was a larger discrepancy between the model and experimental data at high crosshead speeds due to the generation of heat during deformation. (C) 2004 Society of Chemical Industry.

We have fabricated typical three-layer films (A/B/C multilayer structures), comprising polyamide-6 (PA-6), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and adhesive (low-density ethylene grafted with maleic anhydride, LDPE-g-MAH), by a coextrusion blown-film process using various compositions of the three layers. With the goal of predicting the permeability and tensile properties of the three-layer films, we examined model predictions and the properties of the individual component layers to provide an economical and efficient pathway to designing desired multilayer structures. We used the series model for predicting permeability a good agreement exists between experimental data and this model for predicting both gas and water vapor permeabilities of three-layer films having various contents of PA-6. By using the additive rule model, we can also predict the tensile properties, including the true yield stress, strain hardening parameter, and tensile modulus of the three-layer film from those of the individual component layers, with particularly high accuracy in the true stress-strain relationship.

The complex permeability and permittivity (mu(r)*and epsilon(r)*) were investigated for MnZn ferrite-TPU (thermal-plastic polyurethane) composite with ferrite weight percentage varying from 66.7%-88.9%. Fine ferrite powders doped with Mg, Co, and Cu prepared by the citrate gel route were used as fillers. The effective complex permeability and permittivity specta in composites with various ferrite weight percentage were calculated using the Bruggeman effective medium theory. It was found that the dopant content and ferrite/TPU ratio influences the microwave-absorbing characteristics. The results show that the absorbers with (Mg, Co, Cu) doped ferrite have excellent electromagnetic absorption. The reflection loss more than 20dB at the frequencies below 3 GHz can be achieved by controlling the ferrite content and doped elements in the ferrite-TPU composites.

We extend the immersed boundary (IB) method to simulate the dynamics of a 2D dry foam by including the topological changes of the bubble network. In the article [Y. Kim, M.-C. Lai, and C. S. Peskin, J. Comput. Phys. 229: 5194-5207, 2010], we implemented an IB method for the foam problem in the two-dimensional case, and tested it by verifying the von Neumann relation which governs the coarsening of a two-dimensional dry foam. However, the method implemented in that article had an important limitation; we did not allow for the resolution of quadruple or higher order junctions into triple junctions. A total shrinkage of a bubble with more than four edges generates a quadruple or higher order junction. In reality, a higher order junction is unstable and resolves itself into triple junctions. We here extend the methodology previously introduced by allowing topological changes, and we illustrate the significance of such topological changes by comparing the behaviors of foams in which topological changes are allowed to those in which they are not.

Uniform estimate and convergence for highly heterogeneous elliptic equations are concerned. The domain considered consists of a connected fractured subregion (with high permeability) and a disconnected matrix block subregion (with low permeability). Let epsilon denote the size ratio of one matrix block to the whole domain and let the permeability ratio of the matrix block region to the fractured region be of the order epsilon(2). In the fractured region, uniform Holder and uniform Lipschitz estimates in epsilon of the elliptic solutions are derived; the convergence of the solutions in L(infinity) norm is obtained as well.
