This paper focuses on the analysis and the design methodology of the step-impedance phase-inverter rat-race coupler on a silicon-based process. The issues of impedance limitation and bandwidth are discussed in detail. Our proposed concept utilizes a high silicon dielectric constant, phase-inverter structure, step-impedance technique, and Chebyshev response to make the rat-race coupler more compact (similar to 64 reduction) and highly balanced over a wide operating bandwidth. Moreover, the inter-digital coplanar stripline used in the step-impedance section effectively reduces the characteristic impedance of the transmission line for large size shrinkage and insertion-loss reduction. The demonstrated step-impedance rat-race coupler directly on silicon substrate has 6- similar to 7-dB insertion loss from 5 to 15 GHz and small variations in amplitude/phase balance. Compared with our previous work, the proposed rat-race coupler achieves a 3-dB improvement in the insertion loss. Thus, a 0.13-mu m CMOS Gilbert down-converter with a miniature phase-inverter rat-race coupler at the RF path for wideband single-to-differential signal conversion achieves a noise figure of 16 dB.

Wideband bandpass filters using a hybrid ring with a shunt open-circuited stub is proposed and developed. The impedances of the hybrid ring and open-circuited stub determine the location of the transmission zero pair in the bandpass domain. This controllable transmission zero pair can be designed to flatten the group delay or improve the selectivity of the filter. Two experimental filters using the same circuit topology are realized to verify the improvement of group delay flatness and selectivity respectively. These two design examples are implemented by balanced microstrip line on a 20-mil RO4003 substrate. The measurement results show excellent agreements with the electromagnetic simulation.

A novel broad-band rat-race ring coupler with a unit element at each port and an ideal phase inverter at one of the ring arms is proposed and analyzed. Design equations based on Chebyshev equiripple functions are derived, The design curves of equal or unequal power division are also presented, Theoretical data show that the bandwidth of unequal power division with a specific return-loss value increases as the power division ratio increases or decreases from unity, For a 180 degrees hybrid with equal power division (3 dB) and 15-dB return loss, the proposed rat-race ring may have a bandwidth of 4:1. Three circuits of this novel rat-race ring are realized using finite-ground-plane coplanar waveguide. The measured results match very well with the theory.

A miniaturized phase-inverter rat-race and its wideband Gilbert up-converter is demonstrated in 0.13-mu m CMOS technology. The common-mode LO leakage can be absorbed by the isolated port of the rat-race coupler while the rate-race employed at RF port to combine the mixer differential output. A phase-inverter rat-race coupler with a stacked spiral-shape coplanar stripline (CPS) by multi-layer metals can highly reduce the chip size. Finally, the experimental results of up-converter shows the 1-dB conversion gain and 15 GHz RF bandwidth. The IF-to-RF isolation is about 50 dB and LO-to-RF isolation is about 23 dB, respectively.

A Broadband Gilbert Down-Converter with step-impedance rat-race coupler is demonstrated using 0.13 mu m standard CMOS technology. The proposed method utilizes higher effective dielectric-constant, phase-inverter and step-impedance techniques simultaneously to make the rat-race coupler more compact (similar to 64% reduction) and phase-balanced over a wide operating bandwidth. The down-converter has NF of 16 dB and LO-to-RF isolation of better than 35 dB. The mixer core consumes 2.9 mA at V(dd)=1.8 V.

Several microwave passive components can be integrated with active circuits in standard silicon processes for millimeter-wave applications. Passive components such as Marchand baluns, quadrature couplers, and rat-race hybrids are directly implemented on a standard low-resistivity (similar to 10 Omega xcm) silicon substrate for size compactness because of the high dielectric constant. New circuit design concepts such as balanced path loss and distortionless transmission lines are applied to tolerate the unavoidable loss and to maintain the functionality of components.

A new class of wideband multisection 180 degrees hybrid rings using the vertically installed planar (VIP) coupler is proposed. On the basis of the reconfigured ideal single-section 180 degrees hybrid ring (i.e., the 180 degrees hybrid ring with an ideal phase inverter), the multisection 180 degrees hybrid rings can be realized by properly cascading of single-section 180 degrees hybrid rings. Compared with the conventional hybrid ring, the two-section hybrid rings exhibit wide bandwidth, size reduction, and easily achievable high power-division ratios. Design equations based on the equal-ripple functions are derived. Design curves for the equal and unequal power-division ratio are also described. In addition, a cascade of single-section cascadable hybrid rings with a unit element at each I/O port can be used for bandwidth enhancement. Good agreement is obtained between the experimental and simulated results.

A wideband coplanar strip (CPS) bandpass filter using two 3-dB stepped-impedance rat-race hybrid couplers is proposed in this paper. The stepped-impedance structure results in both ultra-wide upper stopband and size reduction. The low impedance and high impedance CPS lines are realized using the interdigital structure for low impedance and conventional structure for high impedance, respectively. The ideal phase inverter has been implemented with hybrid CPS/interdigital CPS structure. Experimental results show that this 2-GHz fifth order filter depicts a 10-dB return loss bandwidth of 100% and upper stopband rejection levels of better than -40dB up to 17.5 GHz. This proposed filter achieves wide passband and ultra-wide stopband performance simultaneously. This filter is fabricated using CPS on 15-mil Al(2)O(3) substrate with a dielectric constant of 9.8. The measured results agree well with the simulated results.

This letter proposes a wideband bandpass filter by cascading two 3-dB stepped-impedance. cascadable 180 degrees hybrid rings with a pair of stepped-impedance lines. Thanks to the stepped-impedance lines, a broad upper stopband is achieved. The stepped-impedance vertically installed planar (VIP) coupler is used to implement the ideal 180 degrees phase inverter and crossovers. The experimental results show that this 2-GHz center frequency, fourth order filter has a 10-dB return loss bandwidth of 92.5% and upper stopband rejection levels of better than -20 dB up to 6.8, GHz. This proposed filter achieves wide passband and broad stopband performance simultaneously.
