Item type:Item, Relationship between Threshold Gain and Bragg Detuning in Photonic-Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers(2019-01-01) ;Li, Zong-Lin ;Lin, Shen-Chieh ;Chen, Yu-Chen ;Lin, Gray電子工程學系及電子研究所The device characteristics of GaSb-based mid-infrared (MIR) photonic-crystal (PC) surface-emitting lasers (SELs) were investigated with respect to depths of etched PC holes. Measurement of below-threshold emission spectra identifies the bandgap as well as band-edge modes. The bandgap separation, which is a function of feedback coupling, increases with increasing depth. From within, the Bragg frequencies and their detuning from lasing frequencies can be determined. Moreover, with increasing depth, the threshold pumping density decreases exponentially to a saturation level, which is assigned to minimum device modal gain of certain value. The relative threshold gain is then plotted as a function of normalized frequency detuning. The gain-detuning relationship of PCSELs is similar to that of one-dimensional (1D) distributed feedback (DFB) lasers.Item type:Item, Quantum-Dot Photonic-Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers with Bottom Distributed Bragg Reflector(2018-09-01) ;Hsu, Ming-Yang ;Lin, Gray ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsQuantum-dot (QD) photonic-crystal (PC) surface-emitting laser (SEL) devices with bottom distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) were fabricated based on vertical-cavity SEL structure with top DBR completely removed. Two-dimensional (2D) PCs were deeply etched through QD multilayers to yield strong diffraction coupling. Room-temperature optically pumped lasing emissions at 1194 nm and 1296 nm were demonstrated for two lattice periods of 360 nm and 395 nm, respectively. Two lasing wavelengths separated over 100 nm; however, there were less than two times difference in threshold power densities while slope efficiencies were comparable. The unique spectral gain characteristics of QDs were considered in interpretation of gain-cavity detuning. Moreover, simulation revealed the sub-cavity should be designed so that its resonant wavelength is in phase with lasing wavelength.Item type:Item, Mid-Infrared Photonic-Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers with InGaAs/GaAsSb 'W'-Type Quantum Wells Grown on InP Substrate(2018-12-01) ;Li, Zong-Lin ;Kang, Yuan-Chi ;Lin, Gray ;Lee, Chien-Ping電子工程學系及電子研究所InP-based InGaAs/GaAsSb 'W'-type quantum well (QW) photonic-crystal (PC) surface-emitting lasers (SELs) of 2.2 mu m wavelength range are fabricated and room-temperature lasing emissions by optical pumping are demonstrated for the first time. Photonic-crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL) devices are investigated in terms of PC parameters of etch depth, lattice period, and filling factor. The lasing emissions cover wavelengths from 2182 nm to 2253 nm. The temperature-dependent lasing characteristics are also studied in terms of lattice period. All PCSELs show consistent lasing wavelength shift against temperature at a rate of 0.17 nm/K. The characteristic temperatures of PCSELs are extracted and discussed with respect to wavelength detuning between QW gain peak and PC cavity resonance.Item type:Item, Effect of Etching Depth on Threshold Characteristics of GaSb-Based Middle Infrared Photonic-Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers(2019-03-14) ;Li, Zong-Lin ;Lin, Shen-Chieh ;Lin, Gray ;Cheng, Hui-WenSun, Kien-WenWe study the effect of etching depth on the threshold characteristics of GaSb-based middle infrared (Mid-IR) photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs) with different lattice periods. The below-threshold emission spectra are measured to identify the bandgap as well as band-edge modes. Moreover, the bandgap separation widens with increasing etching depth as a result of enhanced diffraction feedback coupling. However, the coupling is nearly independent of lattice period. The relationship between threshold gain and Bragg detuning is also experimentally determined for PCSELs and is similar to that calculated theoretically for one-dimensional distributed feedback lasers.Item type:Item, Photonic Bandgap-Cholesteric Device with Electrical Tunability and Optical Tristability in Its Defect Modes(2017-07-01) ;Wu, Po-Chang ;Hsiao, Chih-Yuan ;Lee, Wei ;光電系統研究所影像與生醫光電研究所This study proposes a hybrid structure for a one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PC) comprising a tristable cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) as the defect layer. The CLC exhibits three optically stable states: the Grandjean planar (P), focal conic (FC), and uniform lying helix (ULH) configurations. Specifically, the reflection band of the CLC is set within the photonic bandgap (PBG) of the 1D PC. While the ULH and the FC states can be regarded as the light-on and light-off states for defect-mode peaks in the visible spectrum, respectively, switching the device from the ULH to the P state enables suppression of the transmission of partial defect modes within the PBG. This device possesses many alluring features, such as optical tristability at null applied voltage and transmission tunability of the defect modes, providing a new pathway for the design of multifunctional and energy-efficient optical switches, light shutters, multichannels, and wavelength selectors.Item type:Item, Effect of atomic position on the spontaneous emission of a three-level atom in a coherent photonic-band-gap reservoir(2009-01-01) ;Cheng, Szu- ;Wu, Jing-Nuo ;Yang, Tzong-Jer ;Hsieh, Wen-Feng光電工程學系The effect of atomic position on the spontaneous emission and optical spectra of a three-level atom embedded in a photonic crystal was studied by considering the coherent two-band photonic-band-gap (PBG) reservoir. With the definite phase difference between the fields of the air band and dielectric band in this coherent PBG reservoir, we found that this coherent property grows stronger and results in the spectrum shift and the appearance of dark lines and kinks as the width of band gap gets smaller; and the variation of the atomic position leads to large shift of spectral peak. The averaged spectra of the system with an ensemble of atoms embedded in the dielectric region are blueshifted while those of atoms in the air region are redshifted. The spectra peaks can even shift more than 75% of the half width at half maximum. The feasible experimental systems composed of an ensemble of molecules (quantum dots or fluorescence dye) in photonic crystals are discussed.Item type:Item, Quantum-dot exciton dynamics with a surface plasmon: Band-edge quantum optics(2009-03-01) ;Chen, Y. N. ;Chen, G. Y. ;Chuu, D. S. ;Brandes, T.電子物理學系We examine the spontaneous emission of a two-level emitter, quantum-dot exciton, into surface plasmons propagating on the surface of a cylindrical nanowire. The numerically obtained dispersion relations are found to influence the spontaneous emission rate strongly. At certain values of the exciton band gap, the emission rates can go to infinity due to the band-edge feature of the dispersion relations. Borrowing the idea from the photonic crystals, we model the quantum-dot exciton dynamics with a non-Markovian way and demonstrate that the decay can undergo an oscillatory behavior. In addition, we also show that the remote entangled states can be generated via super-radiance by using the one-dimensional propagating feature of the nanowire surface plasmons.Item type:Item, Dynamic Tuning and Memory Switching of Defect Modes in a Hybrid Photonic Structure(2016-10-01) ;Wang, Hsiao-Tsung ;Wu, Po-Chang ;Timofeev, Ivan V. ;Zyryanov, Victor Ya.Lee, WeiWe propose a memorable and electrically tunable photonic device by infiltrating a dual-mode chiral-doped dual-frequency liquid crystal (LC) as the central defect layer in a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC). According to the transmission properties of this structure, the wavelength tunability of defect modes is obtained by manipulating the LC layer in the dynamic mode due to the electrically controlled birefringence effect. Moreover, the switching between two memorable states, the splay and pi-twist states, creates two distinct sets of defect modes at null voltage. The spectral characteristics of this device ensure its potential application as an energy-efficient multichannel wavelength filter.Item type:Item, Nanophotonic structures for highly efficient on-chip optical manipulation(2018-01-01) ;Lee, Po-Tsung ;Lu, Tsan-Wen ;Lin, Pin-Tso ;Lin, Chia-YuTsai, Chia-YangIn this report, we introduce our proposed nanophotonic structures for highly efficient optical manipulation, including utilizing photonic crystal waveguides, nanocavities, and metallic structures with localized surface plasmon resonances. Owing to their waveguide-accessible configurations and highly concentrated optical modes with large field gradients beyond the diffraction limit, highly efficient optical trapping can be realized in sub-wavelength scale.Item type:Item, Continuous-Wave Lasing of 1.3-mu m Quantum-Dot Photonic-Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers(2018-01-01) ;Hsu, Ming-Yang ;Lin, Gray ;Pan, Po-Chou ;Chen, Yu-Chen電子工程學系及電子研究所Fabrication of electrically injected quantum-dot photonic-crystal (PC) surface-emitting lasers (SELs) is simplified by deposition of indium-tin-oxide over "PC slab-on-substrate" structure. Temperature-insensitive threshold current behavior is exhibited for negatively detuned PCSEL where continuous-wave lasing emission at 1308.4 nm is demonstrated for the first time.
