Solid-state white light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) exhibit the following advantages: simple device structures, low operation voltage, and compatibility with inert metal electrodes. LECs have been studied extensively since the first demonstration of white LECs in 1997, due to their potential application in solid-state lighting. This review provides an overview of recent developments in white LECs, specifically three major aspects thereof, namely, host-guest white LECs, nondoped white LECs, and device engineering of white LECs. Host-guest strategy is widely used in white LECs. Host materials are classified into ionic transition metal complexes, conjugated polymers, and small molecules. Nondoped white LECs are based on intra- or intermolecular interactions of emissive and multichromophore materials. New device engineering techniques, such as modifying carrier balance, color downconversion, optical filtering based on microcavity effect and localized surface plasmon resonance, light extraction enhancement, adjusting correlated color temperature of the output electroluminescence spectrum, tandem and/or hybrid devices combining LECs with organic light-emitting diodes, and quantum-dot light-emitting diodes improve the device performance of white LECs by ways other than material-oriented approaches. Considering the results of the reviewed studies, white LECs have a bright outlook.

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides have also attracted immense interest because they exhibit appealing electronic, optical and mechanical properties. In this work, we prepared gold nanoparticle-decorated molybdenum sulfide (AuNP@MoS2) through a simple spontaneous redox reaction. Transmission electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the properties of the AuNP@MoS2 nanomaterials. Then we employed such nanocomposites as the cathode buffer layers of organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) to trigger surface plasmonic resonance, leading to noticeable enhancements in overall device efficiencies. We attribute the primary origin of the improvement in device performance to local field enhancement induced by the effects of localized surface plasmonic resonance. Our results suggest that the metal nanoparticle-decorated two-dimensional materials appear to have great potential for use in high-performance OPVs.

A method is built for describing the relationship between adhesion strength and chemical states of Co/polymer and Cr/polymer interfaces. Based on the chemical bonding model, the adhesion strength is confirmed to be dominated by the metal organic complex at the interfaces. For Cr/polymers interfaces, the formation of metal-organic complex is restricted by the oxidation of metal atoms during deposition, which leads to almost no variation in adhesion from low [benzocyclobutene(BCB)] to high (AZ 4620) oxygenated polymers. On the other hand, a strong adhesion is observed at the Co/BCB interface that arises from the metal-organic bonds associated with hydroxyl groups in the polymer. The method is expected to provide clear analysis to other metal-polymer interfaces for seeking proper combination in heterogeneous integration.

This paper describes the preparation of fluorinated graphene nanosheets (FGNs) through photoexfoliation of fluorinated graphite (FG) in the liquid phase. We discovered that UV irradiation of FG dispersions in N-methyl-2-pyrolidone facilitated exfoliation to give FGNs. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy revealed that the average thickness of the FGNs was approximately 3 nm; they were considerably thinner than the nanosheets prepared using a conventional sonication approach. Furthermore, when the FGNs were deposited uniformly onto substrates (through spin coating), they formed effective cathode interlayers for polymer solar cells (PSCs), the efficiency of which was 60% greater than that of PSCs containing FGNs prepared through ultrasonication.

Amphiphilic gold nanoparticles have been synthesized and employed for improving the performance of polymer optoelectronics devices. Such nanocomposites could be readily incoporated into the buffer and/or photoactive layers, resulting in obvious enhancements in device efficiencies.

Gold nanoparticle-decorated graphene oxides (AuNP-GOs) have been incorporated into inverted organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) as anode interlayers. The OPVs fabricated with AuNP-GOs exhibited significant improvement in both the short-circuit current and fill factor compared to a reference device fabricated with neat GOs. We attribute the improvement in the efficiency of the device to the plasmonic effects of the AuNP-GO nanocomposites, which induced local enhancement of the electromagnetic field. More importantly, the inverted OPVs also exhibited better reliability after the use of AuNP-GO nanocomposites.
