Objective: Mutated p53 gene is related to the instability of cell growth and cell cycle progression. We aimed to evaluate the association between endometriosis and p53 codon 11, 72 and 248 gene polymorphisms. Patients and methods: Women were divided into two groups: (1) moderate/severe endometriosis (n=148), and (2) non-endometriosis groups (n=150). P53 gene polymorphisms include codon11 Glu/Gln or Lys (GAG->CAG or AAG), codon 72 Arg/Pro (CGC->CCC), and codon 248 Arg/Thr (CGG->TCG). These gene polymorphisms were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and detected by electrophoresis after restriction enzyme (Taq I, BstU I, Hap II) digestions. Associations between the endometriosis and p53 polymorphisms were evaluated. Results: The distributions of p53 codon 72 polymorphisms in both groups were significantly different. The proportions of Arg homozygotes/heterozygotes/Pro homozygotes in both groups were 9.5/66.2/24.3% and 30.7/50/19.3%. The proportions of Arg/Pro alleles were 42.6/57.4% and 56/44%. The distributions of p53 codon 11 and 248 polymorphisms in both groups were non-significantly different. All individuals appeared the wild genotypes (Glu11 and Arg248 homozygotes). Conclusion: Association between endometriosis and p53 codon 72 polymorphism exists. P53 codon 72*Pro-related genotype and allele are related with higher susceptibility of endometriosis. P53 codon 11 and 248 polymorphisms are not related with endometriosis susceptibility.

The crystal polymorphisms of the poly(butylene-2,6-naphthalate) (PBN) prepared by various thermal treatments in bulk state were investigated. Crystalline forms obtained from different thermal treatments were characterized using wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements. The a-form crystal is obtained by annealing the quenched PBN sample in the solid state or by crystallizing from the static melt at a relatively lower temperature (T-C < 205 degreesC). On the other hand, an exclusive beta-form crystal is generated through unique thermal treatment by non-isothermal crystallization at a cooling rate of 0.1 degreesC min(-1) from 280 to 25 degreesC. Additionally, both alpha- and beta-form crystals appear in the sample melt-crystallized at a relatively higher temperature, and the relative ratio of the a- and P-forms depends on the predetermined crystallization temperature. In this study, it was found that the crystalline form transition never occurs in the solid state. Optical microscopic observations indicate that the a-form crystal exhibits a typical spherulite morphology, while the P-form crystal displays a dendritic spherulite morphology due to the extremely slow spherulite growth rate. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to examine the crystal structures of both a- and P-forms of the PBN. It is proposed that the main difference between these two crystal structures of PBN prepared by different thermal treatments lies in the packing efficiency of the crystal chains, rather than in the conformation change of the glycol residue, with the beta-form possessing tighter packing efficiency than the alpha-form. Background: Inhaled beta(2)-adrenergic receptor (beta(2)-AR) agonists are the mainstay of treatment of acute asthma. Polymorphisms of the beta(2)-AR, especially codons 16, 27, and 164, may affect the functions of the receptor. This study was conducted to investigate whether different polymorphisms of the beta(2)-AR are related to the treatment responses of an inhaled beta(2)-AR agonist in children with nocturnal and nonnocturnal asthma in Taiwan. Methods: The nocturnal asthma group consisted of 27 children (mean age of 10.3 +/- 2.4 years), and the nonnocturnal asthma group consisted of 24 patients (mean age of 9.9 +/- 3.0 years). Allele-specific polymerase chain reaction was performed to determine 16, 27, and 164 loci alleles of beta(2)-AR genetic polymorphisms, and peak expiratory flow (PEF) was measured before and 1 hour after inhalation of 0.2 mg/kg/dose of terbutaline to determine the treatment response in these patients. Results: The polymorphisms of beta(2)-AR 27 but not 16 or 164 were significantly associated with the response to terbutaline nebulizer (p < 0.05). The polymorphism of beta(2)-AR 16 was associated with nocturnal asthma (p = 0.027). The Gly16 allele was more prevalent in the nocturnal asthma group (9/27; 33.3%) than in the nonnocturnal asthma group (3/24; 12.5%). Arg16 allele was less prevalent in the nocturnal asthma (3/27; 11.1%) than in the nonnocturnal asthma group (10/24; 41.7%). There was also a linkage disequilibrium found between beta(2)-AR 16 (Arg/Arg) and beta(2)-AR 27 (Gln/Gln). Conclusion: These findings suggest that polymorphisms of beta(2)-AR 16 are related to nocturnal asthma and polymorphisms of beta(2)-AR 27 are associated with the variable responses to the inhaled terbutaline in children with nocturnal and nonnocturnal asthma. Endometriosis displays features similar to malignancy, ranging from neovascularization to local invasion and aggressive spread to distant organs. The altered vascular-related genes might be related to the development of endometriosis. This study investigates whether angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) *A2350G and A-240T gene polymorphisms could be used as markers of susceptibility in endometriosis. Women were divided into two groups: (1) endometriosis group (n=150) and (2) non-endometriosis group (n=159). Genomic DNA was obtained from peripheral leukocytes. ACE A2350G and A-240T gene polymorphisms were amplified by PCR and detected after restriction enzyme digestion with BstUI and XbaI. Genotypes and allelic frequencies in both groups were compared. We observed that genotype distribution and allele frequency of ACE 2350 and ACE-240 gene polymorphisms in both groups were significantly different. Proportions of ACE 2350*A homozygote/heterozygote/G homozygote in both groups were: (1) 66.7/29.3/4% and (2) 96.2/3.1/0.7%. Proportions of ACE-240*A homozygote/heterozygote/T homozygote in both groups were: (1) 43.3/46/10.7% and (2) 62.9/35.8/1.3%. We concluded that ACE 2350*G and ACE-240*T-related genotypes and alleles are associated with higher susceptibility to endometriosis. ACE A2350G and A-240T gene polymorphisms might be associated with endometriosis development.

Recent streams of laser studies on crystallization and crystal growth are summarized and reviewed. Femtosecond multiphoton excitation of solutions leads to their ablation at the focal point, inducing local bubble formation, shockwave propagation, and convection flow. This phenomenon, called "laser micro tsunami" makes it possible to trigger crystallization of molecules and proteins from their supersaturated solutions. Femtosecond laser ablation of a urea crystal in solution triggers the additional growth of a single daughter crystal. Intense continuous wave (CW) near infrared laser irradiation at the air/solution interface of heavy-water amino acid solutions results in trapping of the clusters and evolves to crystallization. A single crystal is always prepared in a spatially and temporally controlled manner, and the crystal polymorph of glycine depends on laser power, polarization, and solution concentration. Upon irradiation at the glass/solution interface, a millimeter-sized droplet is formed, and a single crystal is formed by shifting the irradiation position to the surface. Directional and selective crystal growth is also possible with laser trapping. Finally, characteristics of laser-induced crystallization and crystal growth are summarized.

Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-B) family members are multi-functional cytokines that play a key role in cellular growth, proliferation, and differentiation. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the TGF-B1-509 gene polymorphism could be used as a marker of susceptibility in endometriosis. Women were divided into two groups: endometriosis (n = 150) and non-endometriosis (n = 159). Polymorphisms for TGF-B1-509 genes were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and detected after restriction enzyme digestion. Genotypes and allelic frequencies in both groups were compared. Genotype proportions and allele frequencies of TGF-B1 gene polymorphisms differed significantly in both groups. Proportions of C homozygote, heterozygote, and T homozygote for TGF-B1 gene polymorphisms were 9.3/61.3/29.4% in the endometriosis group and 41.3/58.5/0% in the non-endometriosis group. Alleles C and T for TGF-B1 gene polymorphism were 40/60% (endometriosis) and 70.8/29.2% (non-endometriosis). Association of endometriosis with TGF-B1-509 gene polymorphism exists. T homozygote and T allele for TGF-B1 are associated with higher susceptibility to endometriosis.

Epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin; CDH1) may influence pericellular proteolysis and intracellular signal transduction, which plays an essential part of tumor invasion. In our study we investigated the correlation between CDH1 gene polymorphism and endometriosis in two groups of pre-menopausal Taiwanese women, group 1 (n = 150) consisting of women with severe stage IV enclometriosis and group 2 (n = 159) of women with no enclometriosis. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to identify the cuttable (C) and uncuttable (T) polymorphism of the CDH1-Pm/ l gene (rs1801026) located on the T-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of chromosome 16 and compare the genotypes and allelic frequencies of this gene in both groups. We found that the genotype and allele distributions of the CDH1-Pml/ l C/T polymorphism were significantly different in both groups. In group 1 the CDH1*C frequency was 47.7% and the T frequency 52.3%, while the CC homozygote frequency was 6.7%, the TT homozygote 11.3% and the CT heterozygote 82%. In group 2 the CDH1*C frequency was 17% and the T frequency 83%, while the CC frequency was 0.6%, the TT 66.1% and the CT 33.3%. These data indicate that the CDH1 gene polymorphism may be associated with the development of severe endometriosis and that the CDH1 gene C allele is related to higher susceptibility to enclometriosis.

Endometriosis and leiomyoma are both common estrogen-related gynaecological diseases. We aimed to elucidate the association of estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha)-351 A > G (XbaI) and -397 T > C (PvuII) gene polymorphisms with endometriosis and leiomyoma. Women were divided into three groups: (i) severe endometriosis (n = 112), (ii) leiomyoma (n = 106) and (iii) normal controls (n = 110). Genomic DNA was obtained from peripheral leukocytes. ER alpha-351 A/G XbaI and -397 T/C PvuII polymorphisms were assayed by the method of PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Genotypes and allelic frequencies in each group were compared. The genotype/allele frequencies of ER alpha-351 and -397 polymorphisms in endometriosis or leiomyoma groups were different from those of normal controls. ER alpha mutant-related genotypes/alleles (-351G and -397C) presented higher percentages in the endometriosis/leiomyoma population compared with normal controls. Proportions of ER alpha-351 AA/AG/GG genotypes and A/G alleles in each group were (i) 26.8/57.1/16.1 and 55.4/44.6%; (ii) 19.8/52.8/27.4 and 46.2/53.8% and (iii) 33.6/64.6/1.8 and 65.9/34.1%. Proportions of ER alpha-397 TT/TC/CC genotypes and T/C alleles in each group were (i) 24.1/60.7/15.2 and 54.5/45.5%; (ii) 23.6/70.8/5.6 and 59/41% and (iii) 54.5/40/5.5 and 74.5/25.5%. We concluded that ER alpha-351 XbaI*G- and -397 PvuII*C-related genotypes/alleles were correlated with higher susceptibilities of endometriosis or leiomyoma, which might be associated with related pathogeneses.
