In order to improve the stability and cost of perovskite CsPbBr3 and establish a preparation process for quantum dot materials with excellent luminescence properties, CsPbBr3 quantum dots were synthesized by the hot injection method and the ice bath method in air ambient. Then, a proprietary purification system was used to improve the properties of the quantum dots and prepare high-quality perovskite quantum dot films. Optimal material and light characteristics were exhibited with ethyl acetate:hexane as the purification solvent. In the solution form, the photoluminescence wavelength could be maintained at 508 nm with almost no shift compared with other conditions, and the quantum yield could reach 99%; however, superior performance was obtained in the thin-film form, which exhibited little to no shift in the photoluminescence wavelength and, surprisingly, achieved a quantum yield of 91.6% with a narrow PL emission with a full width at half-maximum of 28 nm. In addition, exceptional thin-film uniformity was observed from scanning electron microscopy image analyses. The CsPbBr3 quantum dot light-emitting diode purified with ethyl acetate:hexane demonstrated an open-circuit voltage of 4 V, a maximum luminous brightness of 488 cd m(-2), and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 0.14%.

We investigated hybrid zero-dimensional core-shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dot (QD)/two-dimensional monolayer WSe2 semiconductors with an Ag nanodisk (ND) for manipulating plasmonic-enhanced photoluminescence (PL) and color conversion efficiency. The absorption spectrum of the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effectively overlaps with that of QDs or monolayer WSe2 to considerably enhance PL. The broad absorption spectrum of the LSPR simultaneously overlapped with the emission spectrum of QDs and the absorption spectrum of excitons in WSe2 to enhance the color conversion efficiency. The highest efficiency of color conversion from QDs to WSe2 with Ag ND was 53%. In the future, hybrid QD/transition metal dichalcogenide light emitters could be further integrated with GaN-based white light-emitting diodes to manipulate the color temperature and expand the color gamut to develop a miniature white light-emitting diode.

In terms of their use in displays, quantum dots (QDs) exhibit several advantages, including high illumination efficiency and color rendering, low-cost, and capacity for mass production. Furthermore, they are environmentally friendly. Excellent luminescence and charge transport properties of QDs led to their application in QD-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which have attracted considerable attention in display and solid-state lighting applications. In this review, we discuss the applications of QDs which are used on color conversion filter that exhibit high efficiency in white LEDs, full-color micro-LED devices, and liquid-type structure devices, among others. Furthermore, we discuss different QD printing processes and coating methods to achieve the full-color micro-LED. With the rise in popularity of wearable and see-through red, green, and blue (RGB) full-color displays, the flexible substrate is considered as a good potential candidate. The anisotropic conductive film method provides a small controllable linewidth of electrically conductive particles. Finally, we discuss the advanced application for flexible full-color and highly efficient QD micro-LEDs. The general conclusion of this study also involves the demand for a more straightforward QD deposition technique, whose breakthrough is expected.

In this study, CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) with various dimensions were used as the color conversion materials. QDs with dimensions of 3 nm and 5 nm were excited by gallium nitride (GaN)-based blue micro-light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) with a size of 30 mu m x 30 mu m to respectively form the green and red lights. The hybrid Bragg reflector (HBR) with high reflectivity at the regions of the blue, green, and red lights was fabricated on the bottom side of the micro-LEDs to reflect the downward light. This could enhance the intensity of the green and red lights for the green and red QDs/micro-LEDs to 11% and 10%. The distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) was fabricated on the QDs color conversion layers to reflect the non-absorbed blue light that was not absorbed by the QDs, which could increase the probability of the QDs excited by the reflected blue light. The blue light absorption material was deposited on the DBR to absorb the blue light that escaped from the DBR, which could enhance the color purity of the resulting green and red QDs/micro-LEDs to 90.9% and 90.3%, respectively.

Quantum-dot (QD) photonic-crystal (PC) surface-emitting laser (SEL) devices with bottom distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) were fabricated based on vertical-cavity SEL structure with top DBR completely removed. Two-dimensional (2D) PCs were deeply etched through QD multilayers to yield strong diffraction coupling. Room-temperature optically pumped lasing emissions at 1194 nm and 1296 nm were demonstrated for two lattice periods of 360 nm and 395 nm, respectively. Two lasing wavelengths separated over 100 nm; however, there were less than two times difference in threshold power densities while slope efficiencies were comparable. The unique spectral gain characteristics of QDs were considered in interpretation of gain-cavity detuning. Moreover, simulation revealed the sub-cavity should be designed so that its resonant wavelength is in phase with lasing wavelength.

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are a competitive candidate for next-generation display technologies as a result of their superior photoluminescence, narrow emission, high quantum yield, and color tunability. However, due to poor thermal resistance and instability under high energy radiation, most PQD-based white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) show only modest luminous efficiency of approximate to 50 lm W-1 and a short lifetime of <100 h. In this study, by incorporating cellulose nanocrystals, a new type of QD film is fabricated: CH3NH3PbBr3 PQD paper that features 91% optical absorption, intense green light emission (518 nm), and excellent stability attributed to the complexation effect between the nanocellulose and PQDs. The PQD paper is combined with red K2SiF6:Mn4(+) phosphor and blue GaN LED chips to fabricate a high-performance white LED demonstrating ultrahigh luminous efficiency (124 lm W-1), wide color gamut (123% of National Television System Committee), and long operation lifetime (240 h), which paves the way for advanced lighting technology.

The dual-wavelength lasing emissions of digitally chirped multilayer quantum dot (QD) lasers are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The two lasing wavelengths are both identified as ground-state (GS) emissions but originated from different stacks of QD multilayers. The lasing spectra exhibited broadening and splitting properties by injecting more current. Moreover, the wavelength-resolved light-current characteristics reveal that first GS lasing intensity upon the threshold of second GS transitions neither saturates nor droops with increasing injection current, but increases with slightly reduced slope efficiency. A theoretical model is developed for digitally chirped multilayer QD lasers. The simulation results qualitatively reproduce the experimental observations.

Perovskite CsPbBr3 quantum dot (CsPbBr3-QD) recovery was performed using lead scrap from lead storage batteries. The perovskite CsPbBr3-QD characteristics were analyzed using different PbO/recycled PbO2 ratios. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the film surface morphology and cross-section. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to observe the perovskite CsPbBr3-QDs' structural characteristics. A photoluminescence (PL) measurement system was used to analyze the optical properties. The results show that lead scrap from lead-acid batteries as a material for perovskite CsPbBr3-QD production can be successfully synthesized. This saves material and also proves that recycling is valuable. The proposed approach is helpful for future material shortages and materials not easily accessible. Although the efficiency is not very high, this process will be purified using recycled lead in the future to achieve higher quantum yield.

Monolithic passively mode-locked lasers are investigated based on chirped multi-layer InAs/InGaAs quantum-dot (QD) structure. The forward and backward tracings of light-current characteristics show two kinks and two hysteresis loops. The optical spectra reveal two lasing wavelengths around 1273 and 1230 nm, which are identified as two ground-state emissions of two differently chirped QD layers. The corresponding radio-frequency (RF) spectra of high-speed detector reveal two RF peaks at 16.21 and 16.03 GHz, which are attributed to fundamental mode-locking of two respective wavelengths. The laser pulses are confirmed by optical autocorrelator to exhibit dual-wavelength mode-locking. The pulsed characteristics of two lasing wavelengths are also discussed in terms of operating conditions. (C) 2019 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

We report here our study on suppression of fluorescence blinking of colloidal CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) for potential applications as high performance single-photon sources. Blinking is an interesting property for single QDs, but it is undesirable for their applications. We have demonstrated that by coupling these QDs to adjacent silver nanoprisms, we could not only completely suppress the blinking but also enhance the fluorescence quantum yield, and also increase the fluorescence decay rates. These single QDs also exhibit anti-bunching behavior which is a signature for a single-photon emitter. In addition, we have also achieved blinking suppression by embedded the QDs in agarose gel. The electrostatic environment around QDs due to negatively charged fibers of gel might strongly affect the extent of blinking suppression. The mechanisms of blinking suppression will be discussed in the frame work of diffusion-controlled electron transfer model.
