A new polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane macromer, octakis[N-(6-aminopyridin-2-yl)-undecanamide-10-dimethyl-siloxy]silsesquioxane (POSS-C11-Py), containing eight diaminopyridine arms, is able to self-assemble to form a physically crosslinked polymer-like structure with good mechanical properties (tensile strength = 46.1 MPa, tensile modulus = 0.58 GPa, elongation = 49.3%) through quadruple hydrogen bonding interactions between these arms. POSS-C11-Py is the first organic/inorganic supermolecule possessing polymer-like mechanical properties as a result of self-complementary interactions, providing a potential route toward the design and fabrication of polymer-like supramolecular materials.

Three kinds of dithienothiophene/carbazole-based conjugated polymers (P1P3), which bear acid-protected and benzoic acid pendants in P2 and P3, respectively, were synthesized via Suzuki coupling reaction. Interestingly, P1P3 exhibited reversible electrochromism during the oxidation processes of cyclic voltammogram studies, and P3 (with H-bonds) revealed the best electrochromic property with the most noticeable color change. According to powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, these polymers exhibited obvious diffraction features indicating bilayered packings between polymer backbones and p-p stacking between layers in the solid state. Compared with the XRD data of P2 (without H-bands), H-bonds of P3 induced a higher crystallinity in the small-angle region (corresponding to a higher ordered bilayered packings between polymer backbones), but with a similar crystallinity in the wide angle region indicating a comparable p-p stacking distance between layers. Moreover, based on the preliminary photovoltaic properties of PSC devices (P1P3 blended individually with PCBM acceptor in the weight ratio of 1:1), P3 (with H-bonds) possessed the highest power conversion efficiency of 0.61% (with Jsc = 2.26 mA/cm2, FF = 29.8%, and Voc = 0.9 V). In contrast to P2 (without H-bands), the thermal stability, crystallinity, and electrochromic along with photovoltaic properties of P3 were generally enhanced due to its H-bonded effects. Two random (ZnII-based P1P2) and two alternating (RuII-based P3P4) metallo-copolymers containing bis-terpyridyl ligands with various central donor (i.e., fluorene or carbazole) and acceptor (i.e., benzothiadiazole) moieties were synthesized. The effects of electron donoracceptor interactions with metal (ZnII and RuII) ions on their thermal, optical, and electrochemical properties were investigated. Because of the strong ICT transitions between donor and acceptor ligands in both ZnII- and RuII-based metallo-coplymers and MLCT transitions in RuII-based metallo-coplymers, the absorption spectra covered a broad range of 260750 nm with the band gaps of 1.571.77 eV. In addition, the introduction of RuII-based metallo-coplymer P4 mixed with PC60BM as an active layer of the BHJ solar cell device exhibited the highest PCE value up to 0.90%.

Mono-polyhedral oligomeric sillsesquioxane-end capped poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (mPPCL) can form inclusion complexes (ICs) with alpha- and gamma-cyclodextrins (CDs) but not with beta-CD. These CD ICs have been characterized with X-ray diffraction, solid-state C-13 cross-polarization/magic-angle-spinning NMR spectroscopy, H-1 NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) chain of mPPCL is included within the channel provided by the CDs to form a columnar, crystalline structure. The PCL/CD ratios determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy for the ICs with alpha- or gamma-CDs are higher than the stoichiometries because of the steric hindrance of the bulky polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane chain end and result in a fraction of the e-caprolactone units free from complexation with the CDs. On the basis of these analyses, we propose some possible structures for these CD/mPPCL ICs. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Two H-bonded acceptor (H-acceptor) homopolymers 14 and 17 were successfully prepared by polymerization of fluorescent pyridyl monomers PBT and PBOT (12 and 13), which were synthesized via Sonogashira coupling and Wittig-Horner reactions. To increase the glass transition temperatures as well as reduce the pi-pi stacking of the photoluminescent (PL) H-acceptor copolymers and their H-bonded polymer complexes, fluorescent monomers 12 and 13 were copolymerized with N-vinylearbazole monomer CAZ (23) to produce H-acceptor copolymers 15-16 and 18-19. Supramolecular side-chain and crosslinking polymers (i.e., H-bonded polymer complexes) obtained by complexation of light-emitting H-acceptor polymers 14-19 with various proton donor (H-donor) acids 20-22 were further characterized by DSC, POM, FTIR, XRD, and PL measurements. The mesomorphic properties can be tuned from the nematic phase in H-acceptor homopolymers (14 and 17) to the tilted smectic C phase in their H-bonded polymer complexes (14/20-21 and 17/20-22) by the introduction of H-donor acids (20-22). Moreover, the PL properties of light-emitting H-acceptor polymers can be adjusted not only by the central structures of the conjugated pyridyl cores but also by their surrounding nonfluorescent H-donor acids. In general, redder shifts of PL emissions in H-bonded polymer complexes occurred when the light-emitting H-acceptor polymers were complexed with H-donors having smaller pKa values. A series of diblock-copolymers were synthesized through anionic polymerization of styrene and tert-butyl methacrylate (tBuA) with different monomer ratios, and analogous block-copolymeric derivatives (PS-b-PAA)s with monofunctional carboxylic acid groups were obtained by further hydrolyzation as hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) proton donors. Via H-bonded interaction, these diblock-coplymeric donors (PS-b-PAA)s were incorporated with luminescent mono-pyridyl/bis-pyridyl acceptors to form single/double H-bonded supramolecules, that is, H-bonded side-chain/cross-linking copolymers, respectively. The supramolecular architectures formed by donor polymers and light-emitting acceptors were influenced by the ratio of acid blocks in the diblock copolymeric donors and the type of single/double H-bonded light-emitting acceptors. Their thermal and luminescent properties can be adjusted by H-bonds, and more than 100 nm of red-shifted photoluminescence (PL) emissions were observed, which depend on the degrees of the H-bonding interactions. Self-assembled phenomena of amphiphilic dibolck copolymers and their H-bonded complexes were confirmed by TEM micrographs, and supramolecular microphase separation of spherical micelle-like morphology was demonstrated to affect the photophysical properties. Polymer light-emitting diode (PLED) devices containing H-bonded complexes showed electroluminescence (EL) emissions of 503-560 nm under turn-on voltages of 7.5-9.0 V, maximum power efficiencies of 0.23-0.37 cd/A (at 100 mA/cm(2)), and maximum luminances of 318-519 cd/m(2) (around 25 V). Novel supramolecular side-chain polymers were constructed by complexation of proton acceptor (H-acceptor) polymers, i.e., side-chain conjugated polymers P1-P2 containing pyridyl pendants, with low-band-gap proton donor (H-donor) dyes S1-S4 (bearing terminal cyanoacrylic acids) in a proper molar ratio. Besides unique mesomorphic properties confirmed by DSC and XPD results, the H-bonds of supramolecular side-chain structures formed by pyridyl H-acceptors and cyanoacrylic acid H-donors were also confirmed by FTIR measurements. H-donor dyes S1-S4 in solid films exhibited broad absorption peaks located in the range of 471-490 nm with optical band-gaps of 1.99-2.14 eV. Furthermore, H-bonded polymer complexes P1/S1-P1/S4 and P2/S1-P2/S4 exhibited broad absorption peaks in the range of 440-462 nm with optical band-gaps of 2.11-2.25 eV. Under 100 mW/cm(2) of AM 1.5 white-light illumination, the bulk heterojunction polymer solar cell (PSC) devices containing an active layer of H-bonded polymer complexes P1/S1-P1/S4 and P2/S1-P2/S4 (as electron donors) mixed with [6,6]-phenyl C(61) butyric acid methyl ester (i.e., PCBM, as an electron acceptor) in the weight ratio of 1:1 were investigated. The PSC device containing H-bonded polymer complex P1/S3 mixed with PCBM (1:1 w/w) gave the best preliminary result with an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.50%, a short-circuit current of 3.17 mA/cm(2), an open-circuit voltage of 0.47 V, and a fill factor of 34%. A series of nucleobased polymers and copolymers were synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Biocomplementary DNA-and RNA-like supramolecular complexes are formed in dilute DMSO solution through nucleobase recognition. (1)H NMR titration studies of these complexes in CDCl(3) indicated that thymine-adenine (T-A) and uracil-adenine (U-A) complexes form rapidly on the NMR time scale with high association constants (up to 534 and 671 M(-1), respectively) and result in significant T(g) increase. WAXD and differential scanning calorimetry analyzes in the bulk state indicate the presence of highly physical crosslinked structures and provide further details into the nature of the self-assembly of these systems. Furthermore, this study is of discussion on the difference in the hydrogen bond strength between T-A and U-A base pairs within polymer systems, indicating that the strength of hydrogen bonds in RNA U-A pairs is stronger than that in DNA T-A base pairs.
