This article proposes a new wideband active power splitter design where the gain cells along the input transmission line are arranged in interleaf rather than the conventional parallel style, thus the circuit's high-frequency performance can be greatly improved. Both theoretical analysis and circuit simulation have been carried out; as a demonstration, parallel and interleaf active power splitters are designed using 0.1 mu m GaAs pseudo-morphic heterostructure field effect transistors (GaAs pHEMT) process and measured on-wafer. The results clearly indicate the superiority of the interleaf topology. A 40 GHz interleaf active power splitter in 90 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) is then presented where the magnitude and phase imbalance between the two output ports are 0.15 dB and 2.6 degrees at 20 GHz, and 0.16 dB and 14 degrees at 40 GHz. The output-port isolation is better than 30 dB across the whole frequency range.

The canonical-form-like cross-coupling schemes of orders four, six and eight and its implementations are presented for coupled resonator filters. These coupling schemes show similar characteristics to that of the traditional canonical form coupling schemes. The fourth-order filter can be designed to have two pairs of transmission zeros locating on either real or imaginary frequency axes. An example filter designed with one pair of real frequency transmission zeros for selectivity and another pair of imaginary frequency transmission zeros for equalizing the group delay response is introduced. Measured and simulated performances are presented. In addition, the higher order coupling schemes are also discussed.

A low-cost broadband interconnect, composed of bondwires and transmission lines, is proposed for heterogeneous system integration. By designing the length and the characteristic impedance of the transmission lines, the bondwire effect can be reduced to provide an interconnect with good return loss and low insertion loss. In this work, the chip and the carrier are realized in 90-nm CMOS and GIPD process, respectively. Measured results show that the return loss and the insertion loss are better than 10 dB and 1.1 dB, respectively, from DC to 45.2 GHz.

[1] A practical time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurement system consists of a cable tester and a nonuniform transmission line. The transmission line includes a coaxial cable, a transitional device, and a measurement probe. Dielectric spectroscopy in a nonuniform transmission line requires a wave propagation model that accounts for multiple reflections in a nonuniform and dispersive TDR measurement system. Spectral analysis and the concept of input impedance were utilized to develop such a model. The system parameters were calibrated using the measured TDR waveform in an aqueous material with known dielectric permittivity. The excellent match between the simulated and measured waveforms validated the wave propagation model. A layer-peeling algorithm was developed, based on the new formulation of the wave propagation model to remove the effect of the cable and transitional device on the measurement by TDR. The dielectric spectrum obtained by solving the scatter function was compared with that obtained by matching waveforms based on a dielectric relaxation model. The latter method was confirmed by the experimental results as being superior to the former at high frequencies if an appropriate dielectric relaxation model was used. Both the Debye relaxation model and the volumetric mixing model could model the dielectric dispersion of soils in the TDR frequency range. The latter method outperforms the former in modeling the dielectric dispersion of soils over the full range of frequencies.

A novel edge-coupled symmetric coupled-line coupler featuring the quasi-0-dB couplings at adjacently dual frequencies is presented based on the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines. The fulfillment of dual-frequency quasi-0-dB couplings is derived from the complete backward and complete forward coupling phenomena at the higher and lower operating frequencies, respectively. To this end, the dispersion relations of the even and odd-mode CRLH lines have to be engineered in a particular manner so that: 1) the substantial attenuation level for each mode; 2) the 180 degrees phase difference between the even and odd-mode reflection coefficients in the overlapped stopband region are obtained to accomplish the complete backward coupling; 3) the enabling curve intersection for the even and odd-mode Bloch impedances; and 4) the considerable difference between the even and odd-mode propagation constants in the left-handed regions are obtained to suppress the impedance coupling and attain strong forward coupling. Based on a thorough analysis on the even and odd-mode dispersion characteristics and Bloch impedances of the coupled lines, the operating principle and design procedure for the proposed coupler with dual-band complete couplings can be fully explained and greatly simplified. A symmetric CRLH coupled-line coupler consisting of seven coupled unit cells was experimentally developed and a shielding (metal) box was used to prevent radiation loss in the forward coupling band. Experimental results show that the maximum coupling levels are -1.3 and -0.9 dB, corresponding to the 3-dB fractional bandwidths of 15.8% and 10.8% at the lower and higher operating frequencies, respectively. Good agreement is obtained between the simulated and experimental results.

A low-cost broadband bondwire interconnect is proposed for heterogeneous system integration. Transmission lines are incorporated with bondwires to form a two-path structure, which can effectively reduce the bondwire effect. Theoretical analysis is provided using a graphical method and it shows that the interconnect can give widest operation bandwidth from dc up to a maximum frequency f(max) if the length of the transmission lines is designed at an optimal electrical length theta(max) . In particular, theta(max) only depends on the characteristic impedance of the transmission lines. The achievable f(max) is limited by the bondwire inductance, i.e., smaller bondwire inductance is preferred to have wider operation bandwidth. An interconnect from a 0.18-mu m CMOS chip to a glass-integrated-passive-device carrier is designed to verify the proposed concept. Measured results show that the insertion loss and the return loss can be better than 3.0 and 13.4 dB, respectively, from dc to 84 GHz. The proposed interconnect shows around 3.2 times bandwidth of a single bondwire alone. To the best of authors' knowledge, this work demonstrates the bondwire interconnect with the widest operation bandwidth for heterogeneous system integration by using system-on-package reported thus far.

Tapered cells are used in the calibration of electric field (E-field) probes. However, the design methodology of tapered cells has not been publicly reported in detail. This paper introduces the structure of a tapered cell and proposes a theoretical model for characteristic impedance calculation. Based on this model and developed design rules, an impedance-matched tapered cell was constructed. The measured characteristic impedances and impedance distribution along the cell show favorable agreement with the design goals, verifying the accuracy of the design methodology. The field distributions were also measured. The results prove that the cell is useful for calibrating E-field probes.

A novel slow-wave transmission line with optimized slot-type floating shields in advanced CMOS technology is presented. Periodical slot-type floating shields are inserted beneath the transmission line to provide substrate shielding and to shorten the electromagnetic (EM) propagation wavelength. This is the first study that demonstrates how the wavelength, attenuation loss, and characteristic impedance can be adjusted by changing the strip length (SL), strip spacing (SS), and metal layer position of the slot-type floating shields. Wavelength shortening needs to be achieved with a tradeoff between slow-wave effect and attenuation loss. The slot-type floating shields with different SLs, SSs and metal layer positions are analyzed. It is concluded that minimum SL provides the most optimal result. A design guideline can be established to enable circuit designers to reach the most appropriate slot-type floating shields for optimal circuit performance. Transmission line test structures were fabricated by using 45-nm CMOS process technology. Both measurement and EM waves simulation were performed up to 50 GHz. Transmission lines are frequently used at a length of half-or quarter-wavelength. With a shortened wavelength, a saving in silicon area of more than 67% can be achieved by using optimized slot-type floating shields. Experimental results demonstrated a higher effective relative permittivity value, which is improved by a factor of more than 9, and a better quality factor, which is improved by a factor of more than 6, as compared to conventional transmission lines.

A novel transmission-line deembedding technique is presented in this paper. With this technique, the left- and right-side ground-signal-ground probe pads can be extracted directly using two transmission-line test structures of length L and 2L. An additional through structure is designed using via-stack deembedding, which is unique among current deembedding methods. The advantages of the proposed method include the following: 1) smaller silicon area; 2) discontinuity between the pad and interconnect; 3) substrate coupling and contact effects; and 4) employment of via-stack deembedding. The proposed novel methodology is a great breakthrough in the area of ultrahigh-frequency deembedding and should enable more accurate RF models to be developed. In the proposed methodology, intrinsic slow-wave CPW transmission-line structures are placed on the interlevel metallization layers, as they are the most appropriate RF device for cascade-based deembedding method involving the via-stack deembedding technique. Experimental results have demonstrated that attenuation loss and wavelength can be optimized by changing the metal density and the position of the metal layer on the floating shields. Both measurement and electromagnetic-wave simulations were performed up to 50 GHz. With a shortened wavelength, a reduction in silicon area of more than 66% can be achieved by using optimized slot-type floating shields.
