Item type:Item, Wireless ATM-based multicode CDMA transport architecture for MPEG-2 video transmission(1999-10-01) ;Chang, PR ;Lin, CF ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringIn this paper, we present a genetic ATM-based multicode code division multiple access (CDMA) transport architecture for the Motion Picture Experts Group phase 2 (MPEG-2) compressed video sen ices over a bandlimited mobile channel with the emphasis of wireless asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cell design, spreading code management, and the impact of CDMA systems on the video services. Such services allow users to share novel MPEG-2 video applications without any geographical restrictions. The ATM technique is especially well suited for variable bit rate (VBR) MPEG-2 video because of its ability to allocate bandwidth on demand to these services. However, since the mobile radio has a limited channel capacity, the over-all capacity of the traditional ATM-based CDMA system may not be sufficient to accommodate the MPEG-2 video services requested by the multiple mobile users simultaneously. To tackle this difficulty, a multicode CDMA technique is proposed to provide multiple VER MPEG-2 video services by varying the number of spreading codes assigned to each MPEG-2 video in order to meet its dynamic throughput requirement. Moreover, both the multipath fading and interference CDMA radio channels tend to cause significant transmission error and IMPEG-2 bit streams are very vulnerable to these errors. Powerful forward error correction (FEC) codes are therefore necessary to protect the video data so that it can be successfully transmitted at acceptable signal power levels. Two separate FEC code schemes are applied to the header and payload of an ATM cell containing MPEG-2 video data, respectively. The ATM cell header is protected by a relatively powerful FEC code to ensure the low average cell loss I are (CLR). On the other hand, the ATM cell payload is encoded for varying degrees of error protection according to bath the priority and statistical behavior of the payload data in MPEG-2 videos. An adaptive FEC code combining scheme is proposed to provide the good protection for payload data with the maximization of its code rate in order to minimize the extra bandwidth for FEC overhead. Two typical MPEG-2 test sequences are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of our system.Item type:Item, Genetic algorithm for extended cell assignment problem in wireless ATM network(2000) ;Din, DR ;Tseng, SS ;Jiang, MF ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, we investigate the extended cell assignment problem which optimally assigns new and split cells in PCS (Personal Communication Service) to switches in a wireless ATM network. Given cells and switches in an ATM network (whose locations are fixed and known), the problem is assigning cells to switches in an optimum manner. We would like to do the assignment in as attempt to minimize a cost criterion. The cost has two components: one is the cost of handoffs that involve two switches, and the other is the cost of cabling. This problem is modeled as a complex integer programming problem and finding an optimal solution to this problem is NP-complete. A stochastic search method, based on a genetic approach is proposed to solve this problem. Simulation results show that genetic algorithm is robust for this problem.Item type:Item, Design of multicode CDMA systems for 3-D stereoscopic video over wireless ATM networks(2000-03-01) ;Chang, PR ;Lin, CF ;Wu, MJ ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringThis paper investigates the application of multicode spread-spectrum code-division multiple-access (SS-CDMA) techniques to three-dimensional (3-D) stereoscopic video transmission over wireless asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. Three-dimensional visual communications, made through the use of stereoscopic images, are able to achieve total display realism. Such services allow users to share the virtual reality (VR) world without any geographical restrictions. In order to create a 3-D system with two images (left and right) that should be transmitted over a bandlimited mobile channel simultaneously, a cost-effective Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG)-based wavelet multiresolution coding with a joint motion and disparity compensation is developed to reduce a large amount of information contained in the images to meet the low-transmission rate limitation of mobile channels. However, the rapidly variable bit rate (VBR) characteristics of the MPEG-based 3-D videos seems a weakness to the transmission of such videos via a constant bit-rate (CBR) mobile channel. The ATM technique is especially well suited for VER MPEG-based 3-D video because of its ability to allocate bandwidth on demand to these services. However, since the mobile radio has a Limited channel capacity, the overall capacity of the traditional ATM-based SS-CDMA system may not be sufficient to accommodate the MPEG-based 3-D video services requested by the multiple mobile users simultaneously. To tackle this difficulty, a multicode CDMA technique is proposed to provide VER MPEG-based 3-D video services by varying the number of spreading codes assigned to the 3-D video to meet its dynamic throughput requirement. Powerful forward error correction (FEC) codes are necessary to protect the video data so that it can be successfully transmitted at an acceptable signal power level. Two separate FEC code schemes are applied to the header and payload of an ATM cell containing 3-D video data, respectively. The ATM cell header is protected by a relatively powerful FEC code to ensure correct delivery and low cell loss rate (CLR). On the other hand, the ATM cell payload is encoded for varying degrees of error protection according to the priority of the payload data in 3-D videos. An adaptive FEC code combining scheme is proposed to provide the good protection for payload data with the maximization of its code rate to minimize the extra bandwidth for FEC overhead.Item type:Item, A simulated annealing algorithm for extended cell assignment problem in a wireless ATM network(2001) ;Din, DR ;Tseng, SS ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, we investigate the extended cell assignment problem which optimally assigns new adding and splitting cells in PCS (Personal Communication Service) to switches in a wireless ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network. Given cells in a PCS and switches on an ATM network (whose locations are fixed and known), we would like to do the assignment in an attempt to minimize a cost criterion. The cost has two components: one is the cost of handoffs that involve two switches, and the other is the cost of cabling. This problem is modeled as a complex integer programming problem, and finding an optimal solution to this problem is NP-hard. A simulated annealing algorithm are proposed to solve this problem. The simulated annealing algorithm, ESA (enhanced simulated annealing), generates constraint-satisfy configurations, and uses three configuration perturbation schemes to change current configuration to a new one. Experimental results indicate that ESA algorithm has good performances.Item type:Item, Heuristic algorithm for optimal design of the two-level wireless ATM network(2001-07-01) ;Din, DR ;Tseng, SS ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, we investigate the optimal assignment problem of cells in PCS (Personal Communication Service) to switches in a wireless ATM network. Given cells and switches on an ATM network (whose locations are fixed and known), the problem is grouping cells into clusters and assigning these clusters to the switches in an optimum manner. This problem is modeled as a complex integer programming problem and finding an optimal solution of this problem is NP-complete. A three-phase heuristic algorithm MCMLCF (Maximum cell and minimum local communication first) consisting of Cell Pre-Partitioning Phase, Cell Exchanging Phase, and Cell Migrating Phase, is proposed. First, in the Cell Pre-Partitioning Phase, a three-step procedure (Clustering Step, Packing Step, and Assigning Step) is proposed to group cells into clusters. Second, Cell Exchanging Phase, is proposed to greatly improve the result by repeatedly exchanging two cells in different switches. Finally, Cell Migrating Phase is proposed to reduce cost by repeatedly migrating all cells in a used switch to an empty switch. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm runs efficiently. Comparing the results of the algorithm to a naive heuristic called NSF, we have shown that the computation time is reduced by 30.1%. Experimental results show that Cell Exchanging and Cell Migrating phases can reduce the total cost by 34.1% on average. By comparing the results of the proposed algorithm to the genetic algorithm, the heuristic method came close to optimum - on average within 5%.Item type:Item, Heuristic and simulated annealing algorithms for solving extended cell assignment problem in wireless ATM networks(2002-02-01) ;Din, DR ;Tseng, SS ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, we investigate the extended cell assignment problem which optimally assigns new adding and splitting cells in Personal Communication Service (PCS) to switches in a wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network. Given cells in a PCS network and switches on an ATM network (whose locations are fixed and known), we would like to do the assignment in an attempt to minimize a cost criterion. The cost has two components: one is the cost of handoffs that involve two switches, and the other is the cost of cabling. This problem is modeled as a complex integer programming problem, and finding an optimal solution to this problem is NP-hard. A heuristic algorithm and a simulated annealing algorithm are proposed to solve this problem. The heuristic algorithm, Extended Assignment Algorithm (EEA), consists of two phases, initial assigning phase and cell exchanging phase. First, in the initial assigning phase, the initial assignments of cells to switches are found. Then, these assignments are improved by performing cell exchanging phase in which two cells are repeatedly exchanged in different switches with great reduction of the total cost. The simulated annealing algorithm, ESA (enhanced simulated annealing), generates constraint-satisfied configurations, and uses three configuration perturbation schemes to change current configuration to a new one. Experimental results indicate that EAA and ESA algorithms have good performances. Given cells and switches on an ATM network (whose locations are fixed and known), the problem is to group cells into clusters and assign these clusters to switches in an optimum manner. Since finding an optimal solution of this problem is NP-hard, a heuristic solution model consists of three phases (Cell Pre-Partitioning Phase, Cell Exchanging Phase, and Cell Migrating Phase) is proposed. The cost has two components: one is the cost of handoffs that involve two switches, and the other is the cost of cabling. This problem is model as dual-homing cell assignment problem, which is a complex integer programming problem. Since finding an optimal solution of this problem is NP-hard, a stochastic search method, based on a genetic approach, is proposed to solve this problem. In this paper, domain-dependent heuristics are encoded into crossover operations, mutations of genetic algorithm (GA) to solve this problem. Simulation results show that GA is robust for this problem. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Given cells and switches in an ATM network (whose locations are fixed and known), the problem is grouping cells into clusters and assigning these clusters in an optimum manner. This problem is termed as cell assignment problem and modeled as a complex integer programming problem, and finding an optimal solution to this problem is NP-complete. Owing to the inability of simulated annealing (SA) to generate solutions that always satisfy all the constraints, the performance of a traditional-SA approach is not so promising. The SA technique is, however, easy to implement, requires little expert knowledge and is not memory intensive. Hence, in this paper, we attempt to develop an enhanced-SA approach for solving the cell assignment problem. The enhanced-SA constructs constraint-satisfying configurations and perturbation mechanism to ensure that the candidate configurations produced are feasible and satisfy all the constraints. The performance of the enhanced-SA algorithm is demonstrated through simulation. The result of the study is also compared with previous reported solution methods.
