This book project proposes to explore different gendered representations of Chinese America through close readings of fictional works by contemporary Chinese American women. Throughout the seven chapters, which delve into different traditions of Chinese American women’s writing and the intersecting problematics of spatiality, historicity, subjectivity and diasporic identity, selected texts are read with a critical methodology of “attentive reading”—an empathetic way of reading by adapting different theories as the reading progresses and using theories by paying close attention to the historical and cultural specificities of each text. Contents Chapter 1 ATradition of Their Own: En-Gendering Chinese American Diaspora Chapter 2 Representing Chinatown: Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone Chapter 3 Ghostly China: Amy Tan’s Narrative of Transnational Haunting in The Hundred Secret Senses, The Bonesetter’s Daughter, and Saving Fish from Drowning Chapter 4 The Spaces in between: Eurasian Authors of Chinese Ancestry andWritings from the Borderlands Chapter 5 At Home and Elsewhere: Diasporic Imagination and Transnational Migration in Nieh Hua-ling’s Mulberry and Peach Chapter 6 National History and Transnational Narration: Feminist Body Politics in Shirley Geok-Lin Lim’s Joss and Gold Chapter 7 Re-Mapping Chinese American Literature: The Case of Yan Geling
