Timelines are broadly applied to various disciplines, such as medicine, economy, or education. There are different presentations, mechanisms and limitations in accordance with varieties from user groups, usage models or data formats. This research focus on the specific application of timeline in social media that are facing the masses, providing functions with simplicity and compatibilities to wide data formats. The other key point of a website of timeline-applied social media are the interactions, including interplays between contents and users, and interactions among users based on published contents. These actions are surrounding the contents constructing the timeline, which are responding messages to events and synchronous composition and modification. In reference to the composition and modification, the present cooperative editing mode applies the functionality of closed group to avoid conflicts from authors and the content providers with opposite opinion. In addition to synchronous composition and modification, sharing of events and timelines, our research proposes a new collaborative mode for social media, the contemporaneous existence and a new possibility of comparative reference across timelines. This research proposed two steps as the methodology, case studies and model derivations, and the implementation and verification of prototype system. In the first step, we reviewed research and studies from relative disciplines, such as visualizing temporal information, social web sites, social networks collaboration, comparative, timeline and timeline graphical elements, and claimed the factors of five visual elements and seven social elements. The successive derivations to the theory model of the new collaborative and comparative reference cross timelines were based on the analysis of ten project cases. In the second step, on the foundation of the theory model, we developed infrastructure of the system, and built a prototype website as the verification for the new collaborative mode of social media, the contemporaneous existence and the new possibility of comparative reference cross timelines.
