Nanometer-scale magnetite particles were prepared in a dispersant system with a dispersant at a very low concentration. The mean sizes of the particles prepared under optimum conditions were determined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to be approximately 3.8 nm. X-ray diffraction and electron diffiraction pattern showed that the particles' phase was consistent with magnetite. The magnetic characteristics were studied using a vibration sample magnetometer (VSM). The dried samples exhibited approximately superparamagnetic behavior.en_US
