Abstract: This study investigated the sensing performance of various nanostructured manganese dioxides (MnO2) coated on quartz crystal microbalances (QCM) toward volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of toluene by using a self-designed sensing device. Four types of MnO2, namely alpha, beta, gamma, and delta, were prepared using the hydrothermal method. The results revealed that the sensing material MnO2 is considerably stable and exhibits optimum selectivity for toluene with a QCM sensing device under normal environmental conditions. Among these sensing materials, delta-MnO2 can capture and sense toluene most efficiently because of the presence of many passages inside its coral-like structure. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.
