Two series of isothiocyanato bistolance liquid crystals were synthesized and characterized. Both biphenyl and naphthyl moieties were introduced to enhance the birefringence of the bistolane liquid crystals. DSC and optical polarized microscopy measurements reveal that all the synthesized bistolane liquid crystals show nematic and smectic liquid crystal phases. These compounds can be used to formulate the eutectic mixtures that exhibit a wide nematic range, high birefringence and low viscosity.en_US
