A novel substrate-mode grating pair structure for polarization and leaky beam splitting is presented for application to magnetooptic heads. These light weight and compact elements provide better flexibility and easier alignment for system applications. Optimum designs for these two types of beam splitters and theoretical evaluation of the system performance are discussed in detail. Preliminary experimental results are also given to demonstrate the feasibility of application of these substrate-mode grating pairs in a magnetooptic head.en_US
