Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the latest standard for the next generation mobile telecommunication system from the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) group. LTE is based on Single-Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA) on the uplink, and based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) on the downlink. In this thesis, we investigate diversity schemes which are effective for improving the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance in a multipath fading channel. With receive diversity, there are three techniques which are Selection Diversity (SD), Equal Gain Combining (EGC), and Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC). And with transmit and receive diversity, we present two methods: Space Time Block Code (STBC) and Space Frequency Block Code (SFBC) for two transmit antennas, then we extend it for four transmit antennas and investigate the transmit beamforming scheme. Afterwards, we investigate two methods called SC-SFBC and SC-QOSFBC, and the clipping method to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Finally, we compare SC-FDMA and OFDMA systems with the above mentioned diversity schemes in BER performance, and also in PAPR performance for the three PAPR reduction methods. According to our simulation results, we have some discussions and make the conclusions. |
