A document of Chinese may consist of several paragraphs, each consis
ting of title and text. Two major problems arise in processing the
Chinese document. The first one is the text-editing operation on the
individual paragraph. The second problem is the typesetting operatio
n on the paragraphs;it concerns the arrangement of many paragraphs i
nto a given space (which is called a page in the following discussio
ns) so that space is utilized in an economical sense, and the typese
t page is easily readable.
It will be seen that a display scope is a suitabnle device for perfo
rming the text-editing operations of the proposed system. Many text-
editing operations have been designed into this system. These includ
e delete, insert, replace, alter, and move operations. To save stora
ge needed in the dictionary and increase the number of Chinese Chara
cters which can be retrieved, some Chinese characters are represente
d by a composition of its subcharacters. The dictionary, which consi
sts of components (subcharacters or characters), is construct automa
tically by using a light pen as input device through the Dictionary
Generating Package. The input coded string to the system may have a
character code or a format control code which specifies the scale fa
ctor of the Chinese character retrieved or the spacing control betwe
en characters.
By extending the presented text-editing systeem,it is estimated that
a mini-computer of 32K 18-bit word main memory with a moderate disk
memory is large enough for a processing system for a large set of Ch
inese characters.
In order to automate the publishing industry, in addition to the tex
t-editing operation, the problem of automated typesetting should be
solved. The arrangement of several paragraphs into a given page so
that they are easily readable and space is utilized economically is
a typesetting problem. It involves the problem of available space tr
acking and space distribution. The tracking problem concerns which
part of the page is available for typesetting and which part is conn
ected to other parts of the page. The space distribution problem con
cerns how to distribute the remaining space into other parts of the
page. To study the automation of the typesetting process, a computer
is used to simulate a fairly complicated typesetting process involve
d in the typesetting operation of a daily newspaper. The simulating
program is written in PL/I language. The result is included, and the
technique for distributing blank space to titles is discussed.
