dc.description.abstractIt is well known that photon massless to hold true in the vacuum to all orders in perturbation theory. The reason for this comes from the fact the photon polarization tensor is both gauge invariant and Lorentz covariant. However,when the photon is propagating in the background magnetic field, the polarization tensor no longer obeys the rotational symmetry and the photon could acquire an effective mass.In this thesis,we use the weak-field expansion technique to calculate the photon polarization tensor in the background magnetic field. The photon refractive index is determined and found to agree with the classical result of Adler.zh_TW
