dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this project is to establish a research environment for the implementation of practical smart antenna systems and the goal is to develop suitable models of communication channels and needed software supports. The effort is divided into three major parts: (1) planning and simulations of a test-bed for smart antenna systems, (2) establishment of propagation models of wireless channels, and (3) simulations and design of the phase array antennas. These three parts are mutually related and have to be investigated in close cooperation. The key issue of this research is to optimize the performance of integrated smart antenna systems taking into consideration of cost effectiveness and availability of technology. In general, the development of hardware has its inherent limitations, but the system performance can be improved by utilizing artificial intelligence. In this proposal, the smart antenna system will be employed first in commonly used mobile communication system to improve the problems of path-loss and near-far. We shall also investigate thoroughly the special characteristics of anti-interference, high capacity and large area of coverage. The concrete goals of this project are two folds: (1) In the short term, it will reduce the cost for deployment of 2nd-generation mobile communication systems. (2) In the long term, it will facilitate the transition to 3rd-generation communication systems, especially software-radio system. Furthermore, the high capacity of smart antenna system can improve the spectrum efficiency. As an application to transportation engineering, smart antennas will offer a key technology for the development of the intelligent transportation system (ITS).en_US
