In this paper, we present a new method for solving nonlinear multicommodity network flow problems with convex objective functions. This method combines a well-known projected Jacobi method and a new dual projected pseudo-quasi-Newton (DPPQN) method which solves multicommodity flow quadratic subproblems induced in the projected Jacobi method. The DPPQN method is a dual Newton-type method that differs very much from the conventional Lagrangian Newton method; our method fully exploits the structural advantages of network-type linear equality constraints to obtain a constant sparse approximate Hessian matrix with a decoupling structure and includes a novel finite-iteration successive projection and (truncated) seal algorithm to resolve the difficulty caused by coupling capacity constraints. The DPPQN method also consists of two decomposition effects, the commodity decomposition effect and the are decomposition effect, which resolve the potential numerical difficulties caused by large dimensions. We show the convergence of our method including the convergence of the finite-iteration successive projection and (truncated) seal algorithm. Compared with the Frank-Wolfe with PARTAN algorithm in which a price-directive decomposition method is used to solve linearized multicommodity flow problems, our method is dramatically faster in terms of the CPU time on a Sparc-10 workstation at solving numerous nonlinear multicommodity network flow examples. This paper proposes a power-spectrum-based connection admission controller design in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches for multimedia communications, The controller contains a power-spectrum-indexed table for managing multimedia call requests, where traffic characteristics of call requests are described by the power spectrum, The power spectrum can be obtained from the claimed traffic parameters of peak rate, mean rate, and peak rate duration; the pow er spectrum has been shown to have a dominant effect on system performance, The results show that the proposed power-spectrum-based connection admission control method achieves higher system utilization and lower call-blocking probability than the equivalent-capacity allocation method.

The effects of radiation on the characteristics of split-gate electrical erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM)/flash cells with recently-proposed horn-shaped floating gates are studied in terms of cell read current; data retention, cycling endurance, program/erase efficiency, threshold voltage and junction leakage. Our results show that the cells appear to survive after 1 Mrad (Si) Co-60 irradiation. Moreover, the after-irradiation cell read current actually increases in the ''erase'' (i.e., low-threshold voltage, high-conducting) state (i.e., improves), albeit the cell read current also increases in the ''program'' (i.e., high-threshold voltage, low-conducting) state (i.e., a degradation). Our results also show that, despite an improvement in the initial read current in the ''erase'' state immediately after radiation, the write/erase cycling endurance of the flash cells is significantly impeded after irradiation, due to a much faster ''window closure'' rate in the ''erase'' state, although the cell read current is found to remain relatively stable in the ''program'' state after cycling.

The I/O power consumption in MPEG-2 decoder is significant because of the wide connection with large capacitances to the frame buffer. To reduce the power dissipation on the Memory Bus, the Gray code encoding scheme is proposed to increase the correlation of the image data transferred on the bus. The bit switching probability in the re-coded data will then decrease and in turn the bus power consumption will be reduced. Combined with the proposed bus arbitration and scheduling scheme proposed in this paper, 22% reduction of power dissipation may be achieved.

A low power design technique for a parallel Huffman decoder is presented. According to the length of the incoming Huffman codeword, the proposed strategy makes the barrel shifter in the parallel Huffman decoder turn off the unnecessary shifting bits to reduce power dissipation. The result of a SPICE simulation indicates that up to 50 percent power reduction in the barrel shifter may be achieved with the proposed technique.

The effects of an N2O anneal on the radiation effects of a split-gate electrical erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM)/flash cell with a recently-proposed horn-shaped floating gate were studied. We have found that although the cells appear to survive 1 Mrad(Si) Co-60 irradiation without data retention failure, the write/erase cycling endurance was severely impeded after irradiation. Specifically, the write/erase cycling endurance was degraded to 20 K from the pre-irradiation value of 50 K, However, by adding an N2O annealing step after the interpoly oxidation, the after-irradiation write/erase cycling endurance of the resultant cell can be significantly improved to over 45 K, N2O annealing also improves the after-irradiation program and erase efficiencies. The N2O annealing step therefore presents a potential method for enhancing the robustness of the horn-shaped floating-gate EEPROM/flash cells for radiation-hard applications.

A novel one-mask; polysilicon actuator driven by thermal expansion is developed, modeled and tested. The structures are heated by electric current due to resistive dissipation. Thermal strain is magnified by two mechanical mechanisms-lever and parallelogram. The device is tested in air and has a lateral 8 mu m-displacement by applying a low voltage (below 3.5 V). The critical current to reach melting point is about 67 mA with the input voltage less than 5 V. The simulation results by analytical and FEM schemes are compared with experimental data. The maximum output forces is measured with a built-in cantilever beam and is calculated to be about 3.3 mu N.

The effects of the donor acceptor concentration ratio in iron-doped Lithium niobate (Fe:LiNbO3) crystal plates on photorefractive response time and on grating diffraction efficiency are studied both theoretically and experimentally. The results provide a useful guide for designing photorefractive plates far optical information-processing applications. Two devices for real-time image recognition have been demonstrated: a photorefractive joint-transform correlator and a VanderLugt correlator. The former emphasizes fast response time, and the latter emphasizes high diffraction efficiency. By appropriate adjustment of the dopant concentration and the ratio of the donor acceptor levels, photorefractive Fe:LiNbO3 crystals that facilitate specific applications have been designed and fabricated. Shift-invariant image correlations have been achieved. (C) 1999 Optical Society of America [S0740-3224(99)01307-7].
