The light-emitting diode (LED) is among promising candidates of light sources in visible light communication (VLC); however, strong internal polarization fields in common c-plane LEDs, especially green LEDs, result in low frequency and limited transmission performance. This study aims to overcome the limited 3-dB bandwidth of long-wavelength InGaN/GaN LEDs. Thus, semipolar (20-21) micro-LEDs (mu LEDs) were fabricated through several improved approaches on epitaxy and chip processes. The mu LED exhibits a 525 nm peak wavelength and good polarization performance. The highest 3-dB bandwidth up to 756 MHz and 1.5 Gbit/s data rate was achieved under a current density of 2.0 kA/cm(2). These results suggest a good transmission capacity of green semipolar (20-21) mu LEDs in VLC applications.

A driving current based model describing the optical heterodyne output of a monolithic dual-wavelength DFB laser is established. The linear relationship between the driving current and the laser output wavelength was applied to obtain the simple equation for this purpose. Actual measured data from the real devices were used for the initial parameter extraction and the practical model can then be built. By using this model, the influence of different laser parameters towards the radio frequency signal generation and different current configuration on the output characteristic can be demonstrated. This can facilitate the future design of such integrated photonic devices.

Owing to the development of modern display technology, micro- and mini-light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have affected technological advancements in the display industry. The structure of mini-LEDs is completely different than that of traditional LED backlights because the former employs a display technology with an LED array structure, optical resonant cavity, and color conversion layer. Display backlight technology encounters difficulty in achieving a truly effective energy-loss mechanism when designing or measuring mini-LED performance. The present study proposes three major mini-LED energy loss mechanisms: cross-talk, resonant, and quantum conversion losses. Herein, the spectrum was obtained through the integrating sphere system, and the calculation mechanism was formed by the down-conversion theorem as the decoupling principle, which successfully calculated the independent energy-loss efficiency of each mechanism and effectively deduced the brightness and color saturation performance of this design combination.

In terms of their use in displays, quantum dots (QDs) exhibit several advantages, including high illumination efficiency and color rendering, low-cost, and capacity for mass production. Furthermore, they are environmentally friendly. Excellent luminescence and charge transport properties of QDs led to their application in QD-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which have attracted considerable attention in display and solid-state lighting applications. In this review, we discuss the applications of QDs which are used on color conversion filter that exhibit high efficiency in white LEDs, full-color micro-LED devices, and liquid-type structure devices, among others. Furthermore, we discuss different QD printing processes and coating methods to achieve the full-color micro-LED. With the rise in popularity of wearable and see-through red, green, and blue (RGB) full-color displays, the flexible substrate is considered as a good potential candidate. The anisotropic conductive film method provides a small controllable linewidth of electrically conductive particles. Finally, we discuss the advanced application for flexible full-color and highly efficient QD micro-LEDs. The general conclusion of this study also involves the demand for a more straightforward QD deposition technique, whose breakthrough is expected.

In this work, we demonstrate the Luminescent Down Shifting (LDS) effect of the single-junction GaAs solar cell with 514 nm Perovskite quantum dots with and without bake treatment. One of results shows that Jsc from 22.22 mA/cm(2) to 23.38 mA/cm(2) and the efficiency from 17.70% to 18.96% as high as 5.22% and 7.12% enhancement. The enhancement includes antireflection and LDS effect, via our calculated the increase J. from LDS effect was 31.65% Further storage lifetime test shows great reliability from these devices can be expected.

In this work, we discuss the feasibility of two color photons for boosting up the short-circuit current and power conversion efficiency in tandem solar cell. One of them is by luminescent down-shifting (LDS) effect, and the other one is the infrared light emitting diode at 820nm. The CdZnSeS/ZnS quantum dots are used in this study. It can convert ultra-violet photons to visible ones which could be efficiently transformed into electron-hole pairs. The infrared-radiation LED can increase photo-generated carriers of the bottom GaAs solar cell. Finally, short-circuit current would significantly increase from 10.46 mA/cm(2) to 13.81 mA/cm(2), and power conversion efficiency increase from 19.89 to 25.22%. This result shows the possible double-LDS effect for solar cell enhancement in the future.

In this study, CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) with various dimensions were used as the color conversion materials. QDs with dimensions of 3 nm and 5 nm were excited by gallium nitride (GaN)-based blue micro-light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) with a size of 30 mu m x 30 mu m to respectively form the green and red lights. The hybrid Bragg reflector (HBR) with high reflectivity at the regions of the blue, green, and red lights was fabricated on the bottom side of the micro-LEDs to reflect the downward light. This could enhance the intensity of the green and red lights for the green and red QDs/micro-LEDs to 11% and 10%. The distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) was fabricated on the QDs color conversion layers to reflect the non-absorbed blue light that was not absorbed by the QDs, which could increase the probability of the QDs excited by the reflected blue light. The blue light absorption material was deposited on the DBR to absorb the blue light that escaped from the DBR, which could enhance the color purity of the resulting green and red QDs/micro-LEDs to 90.9% and 90.3%, respectively.

A three-section distributed feedback laser with a 2.5 InP/air pair of distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) was fabricated and analyzed in terms of its microwave generation capability. A widely tunable single radio frequency (RF) signal can be detected using optical heterodyning, and the tuning range is from 2 to 45 GHz. The incorporation of the third section provides an opportunity to present the dual RF operation when three emission peaks are near to each other in the wavelength domain. The proposed design provides a 21.3% enhancement in the RF tuning range compared with the range of a two-section laser (35.29 GHz versus 42.81 GHz). The compactness of the proposed device can be useful for future radio-over-fiber applications.
