論台灣國語中元音的後化現象

This project centers on schwa backing in Taiwan Mandarin. Important phonetic/phonological and sociolinguistic issues to be explored include: (a) Why is schwa in Taiwan Mandarin so sensitive to the surrounding segments? (b) Does tone exert influence on the presence or absence of schwa backing? (c) Does schwa backing has to do with lexical frequency? (d) Why does the labiodental trigger more constant schwa backing than the bilabials? (e) Why does // not convert into [o] after the velar onsets? (f) Is the speaker’s gender a variable for schwa backing? (g) Is schwa backing sensitive to the speaker’s age? (h) Does the speaker’s education level affect schwa backing? (i) Does speech style has bearing on schwa backing? This project employs various experiments trying to answer the above questions. Following the current development of phonology in a wider context, this project not only broadens the research horizon in Taiwan in an attempt to bridge the gap between phonology and other disciplines such as phonetics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, but also expects to make theoretical contributions to the linguistic community in general.
