The research goal of this project is to develop a novel low temperature alignment process for high-end flexible liquid crystal display applications. The study includes controlling alignment surface, pixel micro-structure design, and alignment evaluation system. Both rubbing and plasma beam alignment processes will be applied and will be evaluated their effectiveness on various alignment materials. The optically compensated bend mode liquid crystal (OCB) and chiral nematic liquid crystals (CLC) will be the vehicles for this study. The surface pretilt angle, surface anchoring energy, surface chemical structures, thin film optical properties will be investigated and compared with their cell electro-optical properties. In order to measure the thin film properties, a prototype of 2D-Photoeleastic Modulator Ellipsometer (2D PEMEllipsometer) will be setup along this research. The data acquired from this homemade instrument will provide valuable process information and will be benefit to the future flexible liquid crystal display manufactures. |
