A simple method to make a switchable liquid crystal Fresnel lens with high diffraction efficiency and a low driving voltage was proposed by photo-induced surface modification of vertical alignment layer. Remarkable diffraction efficiency close to the theoretical limit was detected and demonstrated to depend sensitively on the applied voltage.en_US
