In this paper, the voltage-doubler front-end converter for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive is proposed and implemented. Due to the voltage-doubler characteristics, the proposed converter is able to improve the current tracking speed, the torque capacity, and reduce the current ripples. The common asymmetric half-bridge converter is used to drive the 12/8 three-phase switched reluctance motor. It is noted that only single current sensor is used to control the voltage-doubler front-end converter and the SRM drive, and thus reduce the current sensor volume and cost. The proposed single-current-sensor control is implemented in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and demonstrated by the provided simulation and experimental results.en_US
