First, he did a little bit of research to evaluate everybody's English ability by asking students questions. In turn, he made us ask him, people raised various questions about this curious teacher, and he answered each question with at-easy humor. There were about 60 people in the whole, but he seemed very competent for taking over the situation. Later in the class, he helped us split into groups formed by 3~4 people each, and we discussed about American proverbs listed on a paper. He 'd like us to talk in English only, no Chinese. To build a totally English environment, he introduced us some "Rhetoric tools", which stands for something like "Example-using, Comparison, Acting -it out." Using them as often as we can will do great benefit to our English expression. We can speak more fluently and more vividly. Almost everyone is capable but only lack the activation to say it out loud, Tim's class provides the best chance. Make hay while the sun shines, why not? The world famous Harvard University, providing such an extraordinary humane atmosphere, attracts the most outstanding group of people from all over the globe. With what kind of resources is Harvard equipped, make it become the top university of the US? In the unique case of Harvard medical school, only the Straight A's out of the straight A's students can get the chance to peer inside. Let's discuss what a Harvard medical professor should take consider of. If you're excellent, you're in; if you're not, you're out! What goals should a student set before he or she go to a college? What make college experiences so important in every student's life? We reconsider it and inspected our own school days in the past few years. Next we discussed what qualities should a teacher possessed, let the students be the judge. Then we discussed about the case of Michael Vick, the infamous US football player, and his notorious hobby of tormenting and killing puppies, which brought us to debate about animal rights and animal testing. We talked about rights and freedom, which include the freedom of speech, the freedom of vote, the morality of abortion, homosexual marriages, suicides, euthanasia, the disputed issue of animal sacrifices, bigamy, narcotic drug using in native tribe ceremonies. And after that, Tim played English riddles with us. Today we talked about beliefs and superstitions! There are strange phenomena going on everyday around us, but how do we find the specific explanation? None. So we talked about superstitions in our culture, in Christianity, and in the other part of the world. "The other one's superstition is stupid." I think this not only can help us understand more of other culture's contents in a religious approach, but also our own abundant resources of folk tradition. PS. Everybody is going to prepare a little present for our next meeting. Search on the internet, or go find a book, you will learn a magic trick and show us how you do it next Thur. Of course, if you had mysterious power that most of us don't own, welcome and elaborate it! Don't be shy! The very concept of our discussion today is about "Qualities of life." We listed several items that are considered indispensable to a person's life, imagine when you become old, what is left? We vote what is most important and mostly voted was wisdom. On the other hand Beauty is not appreciated at all. Then we depicted a bet with the devil which exchange one's 5 year life-span with those items: money, beauty. And we talked about insomnia, which led to an interesting worry index. Find out if you worry too much. |
